View Full Version : Genesis 50/60 Hz Mod Instructions?

My Google-fu seems to be lacking. Could someone possibly direct me to instructions for adding a 50/60 Hz switch to a Genesis I or Genesis II? If memory serves, it's a rather trivial operation.

I should clarify: I'm seeking information on how to connect a North American Genesis I or Genesis II to a PAL television. Is that possible at all, or is this famous region mod only supposed to allow you to play carts from different regions on a system that wouldn't normally play them?

I don't think that is going to work unless your system is hooked up via SCART/RGB.

If you switch the system to 50Hz and turn it on it will run in B&W and the screen will constantly scroll up and down.

To do the 50/60 switch, you want to look up "Genesis Region Mod".

to play pal imports you dont need to leave it in 50hz mode. you can switch it back to 60hz after it does the region checks.

Aha. So if you mod a Genesis for RGB, is it particularly difficult to subsequently hook it up to a standard PAL television? Or is it just a matter of finding the right cable?

(Crikey, this thread is already the fourth Google hit for <Genesis RGB mod> !)

SCART is common on PAL TV's and it is RGB I believe.

So, what exactly do I need to connect a North American Genesis I or II to a PAL TV?

Any standard European AV or Scart cable will do. Actually, pretty much anything except an american RF-cable will work as the part connecting it to the TV is diffrent from the European kind.

If you use an European RF-cable it might turn black and white if the TV dosent support NTSC, but most TV:s does.

Any old Scart cable? Like one of these (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/gb/consumer/cc/_productid_SED5162_10_GB_CONSUMER/Scart-cable+SED5162-10)?

And the North American Genesis already has a plug for one of those? Prithee, pardon my ignorance.

Ops, my bad. Naturaly I meant any European Mega Drive Scart/AV or RF cable will do.

Do you know where I can find a picture of such a cable? Is it a nonstandard connector on the Genesis end?

The SCART cable will have either the larger 8-pin connector on it (Genesis 1) or the mini 8-pin connector (Genesis 2).

a Megadrive SCART will work on a US Genesis, it (SCART end) won't plug into a US TV.

For all your Genesis Mod guides, head here
http://mmmonkey.co.uk/console/index.htm

Also has a guide on making a RGB Scart!

However it is a UK based website and the mods are for the PAL consoles, however if im not mistaken they will work on a Genesis! (Dont hold me to that though!)

All the best with it! I highly recommend the mods!

Very nice! I wish I could have found that earlier.
