View Full Version : One game you've always wanted -- but never see in the wild

I've wanted Maniac Mansion (NES) since about 2002. I swear I've been up and down Connecticut (and occasionally Virginia) and have never seen this game. Sure I can E-bay it, but I've always held out for it. That and Valkyrie Profile, which yes, I understand is more rare.

Which games have you guys desperately tried to find in the wild to no avail?

Front Mission

And an original DraculaX:Rondo of Blood
Oh, also a CIB Elder Scrolls: Arena and Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall

And, of course, all the JioJio games.

I wanted Syndicate wars for the Playstation since a bit after out came out. I remember watching videos of it on my super slow internet connection of the day.

never once seen it.

I'm going to have to say either Earthbound or valkyrie profile.

Earthbound, I'm talking complete. I still remember being like 8, and my friend had the bigass box set, with the guide that had scratch n' sniff stickers :P

I've wanted Herc's Adventures for the Saturn. I remember waiting and checking stores around the time it was supposed to come out and never seeing it. By the time it was actually released, I had kinda forgotten about it. When I remembered it, it was already hard to find.

Most of my Turbo and NEO GEO stuff have not been found in the wild.

I actually found a copy of maniac mansion last year.

Syndicate Wars I've seen plenty of times, but never picked up. Ever since the Replay's closed, I haven't seen it.

Skyblazer is one SNES game I've never seen at all.

My area is sorely thin in the Neo Geo and Turbo stuff. I've found a handful of NGPC games and only a single HuCard (Bonk's Adventure). It would be great if I could dig up a find and score an AES, Duo and some games without paying top dollar online. Oh, yeah... and Saturn stuff. That is rather unseen around here as well.

What I would do to find a copy of the super rare pre-911 variant cover to Syphon Filter 3. I know atleast two exist so theres bound to be some more out there. It's also nice that not too many people know about it.

Any expensive or overpriced Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1 RPGs. It's a hard life living as a grad student and a video game enthusiast 'cause the pay isn't that great and the games I most desire demand the most money (thanks to the profit mongers on Ebay). Scavenging in the wild through Craigslist and other ad sites is the most reasonable path in preventing burning holes in my pockets.

However, even this tactic has its shortcomings, as there will always be someone to try beat you to the prize. Within the last 4 months, I had 2 chances to get Panzer Dragoon Saga for as low as $5, but someone already beats to the punch each time. The last time I missed out by 15 minutes. 15 MINUTES!!

My advice to all wild game seekers is be quick as lightning and fast as the speed of light for the wild opportunities we seek will get farther and farther apart.

I've wanted Herc's Adventures for the Saturn.

Funny that you mention that. I just picked that up yesterday at a store in Manitowoc for $8 after searching for years in the wild. Great game!!

Lately, I've been trying to find Lunar 1 & 2 for the Sega CD. Also, I've been kinda looking for MGS Subsistence LE. These games have just been impossible to find and I'm not a fan of bloated online prices.

Speaking of 'bloated', I saw Valkyrie Profile at this comic store yesterday. The shmuck was selling it for $125. Good God, I might as well shop online at that price. Good thing I already own it...

Aero Fighters.

As for stuff that isn't rare, I'm going to look through my want lists and list the one game that stands out on each system:

NES - Gargoyle's Quest II
SNES - Al Unser Jr.'s Road To The Top
Genesis - Whip Rush
PlayStation - R-Types
Game Gear - Sonic Blast

I've found two of each, go figure.

Bonk's Adventure for the NES. I can't even find it on ebay except for solo auctions. It's been awhile since I actively pursued it, but for a couple years there I was looking hard and only saw it maybe twice.

I'd love to stumble upon to ones I have listed below some day. For the most part there's no way I can afford the outrageous prices the majority of them command. Granted I could get Symphony or Crazy Climber via the Ebay route but I still haven't been able to talk myself into coughing up $50+ for one game.

Congo Bongo - INTV
Bounty Bob Strikes Back - Atari 5200
Meteorites - Atari 5200
Pepsi Invaders - Atari 2600
Q*bert's Qubes - Atari 2600
Crazy Climber - Atari 2600
Gas Hog - Atari 2600
Dracula X :Rondo of Blood - PC Engine
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - PS1

There's plenty of really rare stuff that I'd love to find, but as far as just regular games I haven't seen I'd say Ikaruga and Pikmin 2. Ikaruga bugs me because when I first got a gamecube (a couple years into the system's life) it was at the top of my list and for some reason I never picked it up.

I'd also like to find God of War I and II for good prices. I've seen these, but always at fair to high price, which is too much for me for such a common game. I'll find 'em sooner or later.

I know it's not really rare, but when I was a kid I always wanted to find a copy of Kid Icarus but never did. To this day I still haven't seen one in the wild. I'll have to get around to buying it online someday, I suppose.

Rock n roll racing. Played on it (I think the genesis version) back in the 90's & had so much fun in multiplay. Never seen it in the wild, but i think i'll try & pick it up off ebay soon

ditto Kid Icarus. Had it for the gameboy way back when. I might still have it stashed away, but I'd be so lucky to come across it in the wild I think. (lol, i purchased in Canada too, never seen it in Uk since)

Theres at least 3. I passed one up in an Software Ect back in 03/04, but I wasn't really collecting variants then.... In regards to that one on ebay, they tossed it up with a Best Offer a while back, its since moved into their shop where it sits nice and overpriced along with most of the rest of their sealed PS games.

It was most likely pulled due to the 'gas' on the cover and the whole Anthrax scare that was going on at the time of its release.

Stuff i'l like to get in the wild include the above mentioned SF 3 variant, Herc's Adventures (PS), Team Buddies (PS) and the 4 game Monopoly title for the DS.

Viraneth
05-09-2008, 04:54 PM
Well, Stu, I don't think it is about the Anthrax, it'd be more likely about a nerve gas scare that would be because of the gas, because Anthrax is just a mutation of Bacterium Anthraxium, or Cow Hand's Disease, which can only live in either extreme cold or, on animals. It was usually only contracted by coming into contact with the thighs or hindquarters of a horse or cow. It was first used by a weapon by the Japanese in the 1940's when they dropped feathers laced with Anthrax bacteria on farms and small cities in Northwest China, close to the now non-existent Manchurian border.

So it's most likely because of the American flag and the representation of fighting a terrorist attack. Five years later and the cover would have been totally cool.

This thread has made me feel very lucky--I can't think of anything off the top of my head that I have wanted to find really bad and haven't, and I have found a lot of the things mentioned by others, especially the ones I personally care about.

I've found maybe three or four Earthbounds in the wild in the past couple of years, which I usually redistribute to my friends (I've owned a copy since the day it was released). I recently found a complete MGS3:LE for $18, a year or two ago I found Aero Fighters for the SNES for $15, etc. I even found a mint, complete Panzer Dragoon Saga in the wild. I paid $140 for it, which was more or less going rate at the time, so it wasn't really a "find" per se, but I was very happy to be able to inspect it before buying it. Plus it was in amazing shape, and I was actively looking for it at the time that I stumbled into it in a store locally.

Amen. The local GameStops have three or four copies of RE 2 and 3, EACH, for thirty five bucks each. They've sat untouched for a year now.

When they hit a reasonable price, I'll pick them up.

Hmm... there are probably more than this that I haven't found but here is a short list.

Popful Mail - Sega CD
Miracle Piano Teaching System - Genesis, not even just for my genesis collection, I want to use it.
Tomba 2 - PS1, I can't find this anywhere near me.
Kingsleys Quest - PS1, haven't seen this since I rented it when It came out
Jersey Devil - PS1 haven't seen this in ages.
...there are a lot coming to mind, so I will end it here for now. Now i have to make a want list finally.

And in regards to Earthbound, I am not an RPG kind of guy, but I've wanted to try it for a while, found it at a flea market along with Chrono Trigger for $12 total. $5 for Earthbound $7 for Chrono. What makes little sense to me was he had high prices ($20) on all the DKC games and popular Mario stuff for SNES, but low prices on Square RPGs(Had others) and Super Metroid and Super Punchout. So good deals can be found. Just gotta look for a while.

I have never seen a complete copy of Earthbound. (used, anyway)
All I was able to come up with was the cart for $5 at GameCrazy.

There was this time though, about 8 years ago, when my family and I ended up at a K-Mart somewhere near St. Louis.
(when we used to live in the area, that is)
They had a sealed Zelda for SNES, and some other games too. I do remember seeing something there that looked like Earthbound, so I assume it was. Large box, big yellow thing on the cover, the whole deal.

Sadly, the Zelda game was the only thing I knew was significant back then, and is the only vivid memory I hold from that K-Mart. I bought the Zelda, and now all I have left of it is the game itself and the manual. (I laugh at my 9 year-old self for getting rid of the box, AND not figuring out the significance of that "big boxed mystery".)

Oh well, I'll have my complete copy someday. :D

Most of the stuff you guys have mentioned I've found in the wild. Some of it must be a regional thing. Recca, I'm sure I'll never see.

As dumb as this sounds, I have never seen a copy of Bubble Bobble 1, Rainbow Islands, or Bubble Bobble Part 2. Oh, and I forgot Little Samson, I have heard it is really fun!

I would really like to see more pre-nes stuff in the wild. Like boxed 2600 or 5200 stuff, Vectrex, Intellivision, Colecovision. Never seen any of that stuff in the wild. Actually, I have only seen a Vectrex, Intellivision, and Colecovision in person once.

Then again, thats what these forums are good for. One man's junk is another's treasure.

A couple of months after its release, I saw a stack of 5 or 6 copies of Snatcher at Kay-Bee Toys discounted to $14.99 each. Sadly, I only bought one copy as I had no idea how rare and valuable that game was going to be. I sold it a few years ago on eBay...

Atari Jaguar is the system with games I see the least of in the wild. I guess thats due to their popularity (or lack thereof) in my area.

Hell, to be honest, I hardly even saw Jaguar games in stores when they were originally released.

I had been searching for that game for quite some time, when this past January, I decided to check out a new pre-owned (a bit of an oxymoron) game store that had opened up in a nearby city. Lo and behold, there it was. It was at a higher price than I am accustomed to at brick-and-mortar stores, but, it was in beautiful condition and it just had this.... 'aura' around it. Also, I knew that I would never see it in person again. So, after conferring with the misses, I bought it! I understand why it's so highly revered; it's great!
