Yep... the Commodore 64 was officially released on the 16th August 1982, which makes it 20 years old today. How time has flown...!

Let's hope all goes well for the next 20 years heh...

Congrats C64! To celebrate I will be picking mine up next time I visit my parents and restoring it's rule as king of the basement.

Very good timing - I'm getting some new C64 stuff in the mail shortly!

What's even cooler is that, ahem, it's pretty close to my own birthday, ahem.

Mind you I'm 11 years and 2 days older than C64. I guess that makes him my hip little brother...

So what is the oldest C=64 game?

M.U.L.E. came out in 1983, but surely there are older games than that?

And the newest?

Probably Mayhem in Monsterland... 1993?

Favorite music: ARKANOID
(the music has so much aural depth...it rivals Super Nintendo quality!)

LONG LIVE THE COMMODORE 64! :-)

Plenty of games about with 1982 copyrights. These include: Jupiter Lander, Kickman, Music Machine/Composer, Choplifter, Serpentine, Seafox, Tooth Invaders and Omega Race.

Last commercial game is a tie between Mayhem and Lemmings... if only because some places didn't get Lemmings until 1994. I got my copy in October 93, same time as Mayhem. But there are still games being made today for the machine (as for most others).

The problem is a lot of US folks missed out on some really great software because they either switched up to NES etc in the mid 80s or it was only released on PAL. Fortunately with C64 emulators doing both PAL and NTSC, you can try anything out there on the net...

Here's some fun C=64 questions (Which I don't know the answers to):

What was the 1st relased C=64 game?

What was the last C=64 game?

How many books or magazines (that you can think of) relased code to type out your own games?

*sniff* 20 years... *cry* So many memories

taken from the Total 64 site:

Jupiter Lander was the first game released for the C64 back in August 1982. It is one of 5 C64 games (the others being Tooth Invaders, SeaWolf, Choplifter and Kickman) to have a 1982 copyright message. This is also born out by the fact the game has a "601" product code (the 6 meant game in Commodore's classification code).

MAYHEM: What happened to your avatar? He looks like he got hit by a Final Fantasy "frog" spell.

@Kaine....

1) Jupiter Lander
2) Lemmings... commerical release wise in early 94. Last game made available I think was "Heavy Metal Deluxe" a couple of months back.
3) Lots... Commodore User early editions, C&VG, PCW, Run, Compute! and the such like...

Btw I actually wrote that quote on "Total 64" heh... ages ago before I found more 1982 copyrighted games!

@theaveng... on the previous board, if your avatar was less than 60x60 then it would be blown up to fit that size. On here it's shown at its correct dimensions :D

Oh! Well, here's the problem: The C=64 was 320x200. My PC is 1280x1024. So, little Mayhem is only 1/4 normal! hahaha He looks no bigger than an ant.

Actually I've poured more alcohol into my C64 then I care to talk about.

I think I still have my original C64 system somewhere (not bought used but bought new and never sold) but I like the C64c better. It looks a bit sleeker and not as clumpsy as the tan C64. Of course I'd take a 128D over any C64 since it can also play any C64 software plus built in disk drive that seems faster in C64 mode than an external 1541.

Except Commodore in their infinite wisdom decided to fix the volume register bug in the SID chip for the newer C64. Which means sampled sounds and digitized speech come out almost impossible to hear :(

So Impossilble Mission on C64C is silent?

Eliminating sampled sounds was Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Hadn't Commodore heard of backward compatibility?

In honor of the C64s birthday I pulled her out and played a few games this morning. I still can't believe how much time I spent programming and playing on the C64! 20 years? Hard to believe. -- sure makes me feel old.

Speaking of old programs, have you programmed simething for the C64 in the past? Take a look at the code today, you'd probably wonder how did you get so sloppy in the past.

I dusted off one of my early BASIC game (a clone of Atari Surround, using 2 joysticks but no computer player) I cleaned the code a bit and tweaked it, used GOSUB to replace many commonly used routine. The game was nearly twice as fast as the original and took almost 1/3 of the original disk space. I could probably improve it a bit more but my BASIC's a tad rusty unfortunately.
