View Full Version : S-Video/Composite extension, or USB extension?

I'm being forced to relocate my PC downstairs because of the changing weather, and that's a big problem for me. The PC is not going to be anywhere near my TV, so I can't record video footage off my game systems without having to use extension cords.

I have two choices:

One, use a bunch of USB 2.0 extension cords to hook up my capture device directly to my PC. I've read that USB 2.0 cables can only be up to 5 meters (15 feet) long, though... and the PC is going to be around 20 meters (60 feet) away.

Two, use a bunch of S/Video and Stereo/RCA cable extension cords. This might work, but I'd have to pay a lot of money for the cords, not to mention there could be signal degradation for all I know.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I really don't want to stop recording stuff or put the game systems next to my machine (the capture device has a delay of half a second, so it's impossible for me to play games normally with it.)

Poofta!

if you get good cables, the A/V solution will be fine. go to monoprice.com and get some quality shielded cables. they compensate the lenght w/ special material and shielding. also the price is far far far from expensive.

the other solution would be to stop recording youtube of you playing games

there. if its not enough you can get extenders (female - female adapter)

Why the Youtube hate? :(

I use S-Video because it's easier to record off of it for some reason. RCA comes out fuzzy on my Gamebridge at times, and my splitter thing has RCA to S-Video conversion built in, so I figured I'd just stick to it. The only console that I own that uses RCA is my NES (and my Famiclones) so I'm not really losing any quality.

Thanks for that link. I found this cable set (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10207&cs_id=1020703&p_id=2180&seq=1&format=2), which is EXACTLY what I need. :) And it comes out to $20-ish shipped, too! A simple 6 feet S-Video cable costs like $7 down here.
