View Full Version : pc->console ports

looked through the archives and didn't see a thread like this, so i thought i'd ask.

i'm into collecting console games ported from the pc. i have a list started already, but would love some help building it up. i'm mostly missing ports from the post-32-bit era.

genre doesn't matter, but keep in mind i'm talking pc->console ports, not arcade->pc->console or amiga/c64->pc->consoles. i'm also trying not to include cross-platform titles that were simultaneously developed on pc and console; i want pc games that have been shoehorned onto a console, or console adaptations of traditionally pc franchises. (truthfully i'm fearful of how massive the list would become if i included cross-plat titles.)

feel free to correct any mistakes i've made, since most of my info came from wikipedia. i'll be adding a lot more in the coming days.

There were more ports on the Dreamcast, but I can't think of them at the moment.
I think there was a Rainbow Six game, and some kind of space flying game.
I think Armada and Prince of Persia started out as PC games, but I'm not sure if they were ever released for PC.

Saturn also had Magic Carpet.

Quake II on N64 isn't really a port. It's more like an expansion pack.

I was just reading the other day that The Lost Vikings 2 PC definitely came after the SNES original. Not so sure about the first one, but I imagine the PC port also came second there.

Anyway, there were a lot more Wizardry and Ultima ports in Japan, as well as Neverhood on the PSX. Here's all you need to know:

Addition: Wizardry 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are all available for TG-CD (or specifically, PCE-CD). I'm not sure if Wizardry 4 is Return of Werdna or an original game (traditionally console ports of the Wizardry series skip W4: Return of Werdna, but this might be an exception).

Might and Magic II never appeared on the NES, in any country. Only Book One did (and IMO it was a huge improvement over the PC version).

In Japan, Bard's Tale II was ported to the NES.

There were also NES ports of AD&D: Pool of Radiance (whcih despite what the article I link below states, DID come out in the US) and AD&D: Hillsfar.

Might and Magic Book I never appeared on the SNES, but 2 and 3 did (in fact, M&M2 appeared twice--Japan and Europe had two completely different ports).

You forgot Ultima VII: The Black Gate. Also, since you said you were looking for console spinoffs of PC franchises as well as ports, Ultima: Runes of Virtue II.

Again, M&M1 never appeared on the Genesis, though 2 and 3 did.

Also Heroes of Might and Magic DEFINITELY didn't. You may be thinking of King's Bounty, which inspired HoM&M and DID appear on the Genesis.

Another game to add to that list: Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday.

this article (http://www.digitpress.com/archives/didyouknow_pctoconsolerpg.htm), here at Digitpress, might be interesting, though it deals specifically with RPGs and is by no means complete or comprehensive.

POINTLESS FACT: That article is how I discovered Digitpress.

POINTLESS FACT 2: I still want to know how Zork I works on the Playstation.

both lost vikings games were first released on the snes. pop was first made for the apple ][.

maniac mansion added. deja vu, uninvited, and shadowgate were originally mac games.

i'll add half life since it found its way to the web. typing of the dead was an arcade game first.

Can't forget The Adventures of Wily Beamish, Loadstar: The Legend Of Tully Bodine and Heart of the Alien (Out of this World) all on the Sega CD.

Also there is the Dynamix game Stellar Fire on the Sega CD that is part of the Stellar/Nova 9 series. Although Stellar Fire might be exclusive to the Sega CD and not be a PC port, but i'm not sure.

For that matter, we'd need to add TG16 Loom too.

If you're going to count the FM Towns Marty, you'll want to add the Marty ports of Loom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and of course the famous Zak McKraken port. (I didn't know it had one of the Kyrandia games too!)

I'm not sure if SNES Metal Marines counts. I'm told the SNES game is very different from the PC game anyway.

Was Brutal Paws of Fury on a console first? I know the PC version had a sequel.

Crusader: No Remorse was on the PSX and Saturn.

And SNES Spectre was on the Mac.

How about Lode Runner? Originally made for the Apple ][, C64, Atari, MSX, etc. Made it, console wise in various forms, to the Sega 1000/3000, NES, Atari XEGS (if you count that as a game console), PS1, Saturn, N64, and TG16. Plus there's various hand held system ports as well.

My mind isn't working too well right now, but having just done an article on this, a couple Indiana Jones console games were originally PC-developed.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine for N64 was first PC-developed as was Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb for PS2 and Xbox (explaining why the PS2 version is slightly inferior).

The console The Last Crusade games were loosely based off the 1989 PC releases of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Action Game, but I don't think they are similar enough to make your list. Use your judgment or have other users give their opinions on it.

For some odd reason, a Playstation 2 game that comes to mind though is The Operative: No One Lives Forever (the spy FPS), also Tribes was made into the PS2 port Tribes: Aerial Assault.

If you're being super strict about the games originating on an actual PC, then you can't count the early Wizardry games since they debuted on the Apple ][. Same goes for Elite on the NES, that came out on the BBC Micro first. Didn't Frontier: Elite ii come out on the Amiga before the PC? And wasn't Maniac Mansion originally a C64 game?

koster
05-15-2008, 02:43 PM
Mafia (PS2 and Xbox) and Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (PS2) were ports of PC games.

The original Syndicate should probably be on the list - I don't think it was an Amiga port.

YoshiM
05-15-2008, 04:47 PM
Let's see...some adds:

3DO

-The Daedalus Encounter (I *think* it came out on PC first then dribbled to the 3DO)

Dreamcast

-Starlancer

PS2

-Star Trek: Elite Force

Xbox

-Crimson Skies
-Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (also on 360)
-Tron 2.0

Corrections:

NES: Sid Meier's Pirates!-It's actually just called "Pirates!". Same game just a change in the name. I honestly didn't know the pedigree until I saw the box screen shots.

May I ask what lead you to start a collection of this type of game? No offense, but it seems like a really random cross section of games.
