Who else here thinks it will be 2008 Game of the Year?

Me! :D

I can't help but think that it would've been much better had they not gone the first-person route. The parkour aspects of the game seem like they'll be hindered by the fact that you can't see your entire body while attempting them, which is crucial for a game like this. I'm still interested in the game though, so I'll reserve final judgment until I've actually gotten a chance to play it.

I was extremely surprised and incredibly impressed when I first watched the trailer a few days back. I highly doubt it will be game of the year, but as long as it pans out it will definitely be in my collection.

It looks like Breakdown combined with how Sonic games probably SHOULD play now.

Exactly. I loved breakdown. I still play it every now and then. Love doing the grope glitch in the elevator, and of course, kicking soldiers around.

Hmm...looks kind of cool, I guess.

But it's got EA stamped all over it, which IMO makes the likelihood that it will get anywhere near "great" (aka GOTY) in the category of slim-to-none.

Viraneth

EA is just producing it thankfully.

DICE are the ones actually dev/designing it. They have yet to let us down, so, I am very optimistic.

Yeah...and EA was "just producing" Ultimas VIII and IX, right? Origin was developing it.

I've heard that one before.

Let me keep my fantasy of everything EA touches not always turning to a steaming pile like Ultima, MoH, LotR.

bumping this up!
Here is a developer walkthrough from E3: http://platformerupdate.com/2008/07/18/mirrors-edge-the-amazing-new-first-person-action-platformer/

Overall this is now in my top 5 most anticipated games for this year, it reinvents the platforming genre.

Mirror's Edge sounds like it could be the name of a progressive rock band and/or the title to a progressive rock album.

Therefore, it gets at least a couple of points from me.

"first person action platformer". Yikes. That sounds like a very bad idea, but the video looks pretty promising. I haven't read anything about this game, so maybe this has been addressed, but I'd be afraid that this game is really linear. I mean you're in a wide open world by the looks of it, but it seemed like there may only be one way to get from A to B. That and hand holding would kind of kill the game for me. Still, here's hoping they release a demo so I can check it out.

During IGN's Live Wire E3 coverage, one of the developers said that the color red is used to denote the protagonist's "runner's vision", which shows you the most opportune route to your destination. Despite that, there will be several ways to go about doing things, so it's not totally linear in that sense.

jesus

Anyway, the game looks great. I think it's better because it's in first person instead of third. I just hope it isn't too short.

I played the demo and am now considering buying it, And it is rare for me to buy games when they are new. I'll probably wait until I've rented it from gamefly though, Just to be sure.

This is a game that wasn't on my radar at all, but I played the demo today on 360 and I was impressed. It looks like it could be a fun, high stress game.

The time-attack mode in the demo you get access to with a pre-order code has now become my new obsession. This is the best racing game I've played in a long time. I've been following the top guys ghost replay for 4 hours now, and I'm determined to have him beat asap, screw sleeping :)

I was actually just poking at the forums here hoping anyone had some tips, I get hung up every other game with the wallrun-turn-jump-wallrun-turn-jump thing in the beginning there, landing flat on my back.

At least it gives me a good laugh when I screw up :)

I was looking forward to this one, and while the demo was fun, I don't think I'll be gunning for this one any time soon. Everything felt too convenient for me, like I was just going through some step by step obstacle course. I kind of figured that's what it was going to be like, so that was no big surprise.

Either way I love the visual style.

edit: I just saw my comment above from July and realized that my worries at the time have kind of played out in the demo. Go me!

I played the demo and was hooked. At first I was skeptical with everything done in first person mode, but that's what makes it feel immersive. This been the first demo where after it ends, I don't want it to. Well needless to say I have it preordered now.

I played the demo this morning and I was pretty impressed, I was expecting another half-assed first person game. It feels like a crossbreed between Prince of Persia and Aeon Flux, I probably won't pick it up at release, but I'll pick it up somewhere a long the line.

The demo rocks, they pulled off the first person platforming really well. Picking this up for sure :D

I didn't like the demo, it was entertaining but it felt like a false freedom- like "you can run and jump all over these buildings... as long as the path is colored red..."

Yeah, it's pretty on-rails. It's like Half Life: Jumpy Edition. It's ok for what it is, however.

I thought it sucked....and the gameplay vids I see dont show much variation in the gameplay, so I think itll get boring fast.

Not quite. Red is the "recommended path" that you could take. There are quite a few different ways to get around the demo level. Try turning runner vision off and playing, it removes the red highlight.

For example, the tutorial part where you have to swing across a bar, jump onto a pipe, then maneuver around the edge of a building can be skipped entirely, saving you at least 30-40 seconds in time trial.

I've already played through the demo multiple times each time taking a different path. It's not completely sandbox but to say there's only one way through a level is just false.

I gave the demo a run through last night. I had a good time but by the third time through the story mode my stomach was turning something fierce. Like Portal, this game gives me motion sickness. Oh well.

This came out today, anyone else get it?

I preordered so I got the fancy bag with it. It's a lot higher quality than I thought it would be, and it's bigger too! You can fit a laptop inside with plenty of room leftover.

The game is pretty much like the demo, but you spend most of the time running away from enemies so you can't really stop and try out different ways to approach an area, you just kinda do it on the fly. I heard the game is only around 8-9 hours long which sucks but there are 3 collectable bags in each chapter (that I usually miss) and there's time trials and speedrun challenges too. The time trials are more fun because there's no one chasing you and you can look around and find shorter ways to get to the goal.

Overall I think it's pretty fun. Play with runner vision off though, it's better.

I'm still enjoying the demo so I can't wait for the game.

Yep, picked this up yesterday. Beat it later that night :)

Yeah, it was about 8 hours to get through, and that was with me screwing off a bit as I played, trying different things. This one really is worth a rent *at least* , It'll have you on the edge of the seat twisting your controller loudly screaming "NO NO NO NO Don't jump off that like that ahhhhhshiiiiitttt" for hours, hehe. One of the most intense games I've played through, worth every penny for me.

Next: Platinum Trophy :)

I've only gone through the demo so I'm still on the fence with this one. Enjoyed it but honestly I don't want to pay $60 before tax for something that's only 6-8 hours long.

One thing that's been bothering me. Aren't radio transmissions considered to be unsafe for transmitting because the government monitors them? If so; why exactly is Faith receiving all her orders through a radio? Isn't that somewhat counter productive?

Well I beat it the other day, and it was quite a thrill ride. There were plenty of great moments, but the combat was really fustrating. A lot of time you had to wait until one guard approached you so you could take him down, rinse and repeat. There are some cool moves you could pull off, like jumping off a flight of stairs and stomping on a guy's head(you get a Trophy for the PS3 called: It's A Me! ie Mario lol), and disarming looks cool when you can get it to work. If they do a sequel combat should be made easier, or just more fun.

The platforming on the other hand is perfect. Even though at times you felt stuck not knowing what to do next. As far as the story is concerned it wasn't too engaging imo and I would've preferred in-game cutscenes. I mean they have a pretty well detailed model of Faith, but you only get to see it twice(wtf). It's a rental for most people, unless you were already sold on the demo. A short game, but a great ride while it lasts.

I just finished the game and I thought it was pretty good, then again I'm borrowing this game and do not own it. When this game drops in price I will definitely pick it up. It only took about 6 hours to beat and I thought it was alot of fun. Most of the game is just trial and error but there are a few times when it is just tough to figure out what to do. I recommend the game, but I'd wait a few price drops and I wouldn't pay the full $60 for it.

I thought this game would be a lot better. It is still very good but there are parts in the game that make me mad, Which shouldn't ever happen in games these days. Can anyone help me in the part where I'm supposed to defeat ropeburn? It seems like I can't do a damn thing against him, He always throws me off the roof and I'm powerless to do anything! AAAAAAAAGHHHHH! Spoiler end

I played the demo a few days ago and it was okay but I didn't really feel all that involved. Although the art style of the city was pretty cool, the gameplay didn't do much for me. I was left thinking that precision jumping and first person viewpoints are two things I'd still rather not mix.

I just beat this the other day, it is now one of my favorite games of 2008 and will probably make my top 20 games of all time list (if I ever make one, lol). Yes it has its flaws, but I am just in love with it's style and world. I did a review for it with some gameplay videos I captured if anyone is interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9VAMK0uHAY

I got this on my list from gamefly. It looks really cool, and after seeing Pete's youtube vid, I wanna play it just for the aesthetics, but since I have zero interest in time trials outside of racing games it 'll most likely remain a rental for me till I see it for <$20.
