NES Bard's Tale Question

I don't have the instruction manual for this game, and I couldn't find a FAQ that answered my question, so I'll put it to you guys:

Where do I find/buy a musical instrument for my bard? Can't sing without it.... Seems I must've checked every door in Scara Brae, but I'm getting no love. Help a brotha out!

The arms salesman sales that I do believe.. Garth's.. he is up one from the Guild on the other side of the street.

I've been in there a million times though...! Do I need to hit a certain level, or fulfill some weird criteria before he offers an instrument to me?

nope. You should be able to get all the instruments right off.. In fact I thought the game started with the bard having a lute..

Damn, I don't know what's up then. I didn't see anything for sale, and I sure as hell didn't start off with a lute or any other instrument. Weird...

In the Garth's section it says

Harp String instrument that produces beautiful music.

Flute Known for its clear sounds.

Yeah, I was just looking at that, coincidentally. I get the impression this going to be one of those "slap myself in the forehead" discoveries when I get home tonight...
