Okay, here's the situation. I love Guitar Hero (I suck at difficulties above Medium, but I love it regardless). I bought the original on the PS2, and have been continuing to get the games for the PS2 (GH2, GH80s and GH3). The problem is, I know eventually I'll have to upgrade to the 360 (or the PS3 or the Wii, but I prefer 360) for my GH fix, but I'm reluctant to do so as it would require finding the cash (and the storage space) for another guitar controller. GH4 being confirmed for the PS2 has only made me more reluctant. GH1 and GH80s not being available on 360 just compunds that.

...Matters get more complicated. My 2001-model PS2 absolutely hates my widescreen HD ready TV. So much so that when playing GH games, I can't actually see the bottom of the screen, which makes the game a little frustrating when you get to the harder songs (fortunately my sense of rhythm is good enough to compensate).

So the $140 question (as in how much it'd cost for me to upgrade to 360 Guitar Hero, being a Brit)- should I drop the PS2 games altogether and trade-in for the 360 version, stick with the PS2 as long as possible or think 'sod the cost' and get the 360 version now whilst keeping GH1 and 80s on the PS2?

Okay ... here's the dealy with the Guitar Hero series and current gen consoles, I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

360:

Guitar Hero 1 Main Tracks (no bonus tracks) available via DLC on Guitar Hero 2
Guitar Hero 2 (plus a few exclusive 360 bonus tracks) available
Guitar Hero 3 available

All are compatible with either the wired XPlorer or the wireless Les Paul.

PS3:

Guitar Hero 1 (PS2) playable with a PS2 to USB controller adapter
Guitar Hero 2 (PS2) incompatible
Guitar Hero Rocks the 80's (PS2) incompatible
Guitar Hero 3 (PS3) available and playable with wireless Les Paul OR compatible USB guitar controller

Don't believe ANY company that says that they have a control device that allows you to use a PS2 guitar controller for Guitar Hero 2 or Rocks the 80's, they only do in such a limited capacity that it makes both games totally un-playable.

Hope that helps your decision making-process.

I wouldn't dump the PS2 for the 360. The PS2 is a more reliable system than the 360 any day of the week, and I own both, so I'm not being a fanboy here.

If you just want to play Guitar Hero, I would stick with the PS2. The only advantages to 360 GH are better graphics and downloadable songs, and only if you have Xbox Live.

The lack of across the board compatibility with the GH series on PS2/PS3 prompted me to migrate over to 360 with the series.

I hope that someday that people will figure out a way to get the PS2 games to ALL run on PS3 ... but until that time, I'd agree either keep your PS2 OR migrate over to 360 for the maximum compatibility of the core series titles.

The DLC makes the 360 versions alone worth getting. Granted, they are pretty pricey, but in addition to paid content, GHIII has several free songs. Plus online play is pretty fun.

I switched over at GHII and haven't looked back.

I'd get the 360 and keep the PS2 for when you want your old school GH fix. That's basically what I did. Another advantage the 360 has is that if you ever decide to pick up Rock Band the GH guitars will work with it on the 360, they won't on the PS3.

If I were you, I would get a used slim PS2 and use it to play my older GH games. I believe the slim models are much more compatible with widescreen TVs now.

That's definitely what I'm leaning towards. Today I had a look around the shops and enquired as to what Guitar Hero on 360 was going for pre-owned. The answer of £65 was none too appealing so I'm going to leave it at least a week- Rock Band is out over here on Friday so that should drive pre-owned prices down a bit. Though I'm always a bit concerned when getting pre-owned peripherals- calling the hygiene 'questionable' would be putting it mildly...
