Anyone know if there is anything special about a display model PS3? It is a longshot, but I might be able to get my hands on one if there was some good reason too. Actually, I think it is a decent price for a 60 gb anyway, so I may pick it up regaurdless, but it'd be nice to know more about it before buying. Like I assume it plays everything the same as a regular one (blu-rays, etc), and can be updated?

The display model in the kiosk under the glass isn't a real system. There's a compartment under the kiosk that has the real system... make sure you're not getting hollow plastic.

What he said. If you are talking about the actual unit that they use to play the demo games, then it should be able to serve all the functions of a PS3

Yeah, no way I'm buying one of these without seeing it hooked up and working. Is there anything that distinguishes it from a regular PS3?

Lack of anything. If you pick it up and its empty, then its the shell. There won't be a serial number sticker on the back of it or anything like that which should also be a dead give away.

I don't think I'm being clear. This would be what I guess you'd call a kiosk unit. It actually does play games. What I want to know is if they just took a ps3 out of a retail box and used it as the 'kiosk' unit, or if there was something different about them. I don't like using the word kiosk, because they aren't the same nowadays.

Aside from it automatically resetting itself every 15 minutes? I don't think so.

I don't know if this can be disabled.

If this helps at all.. I know at gamecrazy, The systems they use for demo's are the actual systems.

Ugh. Let me help.

If the unit's a 60 gig model, it's from the launch era kiosks; it is a real, bonafide retail version PS3 with one hitch. Basically they are "written" to be "locked" into "Demo mode". This means damn near any specific system settings are not available to you, like bios upgrades and the like.

However, all you need is the "unlock" code (and whoever has access to sell a kiosk PS3 should have access to the codes) and once that is used to disable the demo mode, it's a standard retail PS3. Run the "reformat" drive option and it'd be like day 1 on the unit.

I would knock a lot off the price... remember, that thing has been on 24/7 since launch. There might be some collector value to the thing too, i know a guy who might want one for "research"...
