About a week and a half ago (the 9th), Valve released a demo for Portal entitled "The First Slice" through Steam. It contains the first 11 "test chambers", plus a developer commentary throughout the game that can be unlocked once you beat the demo the first time.
Thought I'd give a heads-up in case there are some Luddites like myself who hadn't gotten a chance to play this game yet. :P

This is pretty cool, but how do 11 chambers constitute the first slice? I would think that would be half the cake. Anyway, if you really want to get portal I think it's on sale at Circuit City for $9.99 for the PC this week.

the last level alone is a goodly portion ;p the beginning chambers are really easy and can be completed super quick so it really is a first slice ;p

This was available some time ago, but only to people with NVidia hardware. Not that I got around to trying it.
The next time I see The Orange Box on sale, I will not hesitate to purchase it - Best Buy had it for $30 CDN a while ago, and no way I'm paying $20 for Portal as long as there's some possibility of that $30 price happening again.
So the question is, can you use fanmade maps with The First Slice?
check ebay for some deals ;p when it first came out I got it for $32 sealed US retail (not from some retailer though, actual person which for some reason was selling it first week it came out ;p 32 BIN and free shipping if u BINed it ;p)

DO NOT BUY IT FROM EBAY, EVEN IF THEY SAY IT'S NEW.
If you happen to get a box from Asia or Europe, your key won't work or will eventually be disabled because it's not meant for use in your region. A lot of people lost $30-$40 because they bought the Thai version and Steam told them to pay full price for their games.
And if the key has already been used, you're fucked. Steam doesn't give support to people who bought it on eBay.
