Mine has to be at a local flea market where this guy has tons of NES, SNES, Genesis, PS2, and Xbox games, but they are all around $25.

stuff locally is usually pretty well priced here and if not they come down to a proper price when haggling in my experience. Craigslist sellers and some garage sales around here have interesting prices. I saw an atari 2600 on CL for 100 dollars tonight which just blew me away (it had 10 games but still!)
$30,000 for a ps3, the self-proclaimed "most-expensive ps3 on ebay." Nothing special about it, at all :|

I think we're going to see a lot more bad deals if this grading system picks up.
At the market by my house there's a guy who sells video game stuff, the guy must be on crack cause you'll see PSone's with hook ups and 1 controller for $80, $25 for SMB3, $25 for Metroid, $50 for Super Metroid I could go on and on.

his prices are that high probably because some of the popular common stuff like mario 3 WILL sell for 25$ ,just look at ff7 it should be a 10$ game based on rariity but it sells for 50+, although the psx for 80 is pretty silly.

Here's a few of what I've seen over the years:
- NES in a bag with misc. cables, accessories, and games (At Goodwill, sometime in 2001-2002): $30
- Mega Man X3 (At Gamestop.com, circa 2002): $90
- Sega Genesis 2 (At a local pawn shop, last year): $100
- Metal Gear [NES] (eBay, graded by those idiots that grade games): $75
- Super Mario 64 110-film Camera (At the local Goodwill, circa 2001): $100

I agree.
Though God bless them, because when you really, really, really want that game that no one in the world has in decent condition, you can always shovel out a pile of money to get their new/sealed copies.

Rarity does not always correlate to value. It may be common as dirt but enough people want it that $10 isn't all that ridiculous, especially to those who aren't collectors, but people who want to play "that old Mario game."

A year and a half ago, I was at a local-ish flea market, looking for games. I found a guy with a crate with about 15 or so NES games in them. I don't remember much, but I do recall he had Xevious, SMB, maybe Zelda, etc. All very common, cheap games. I asked him how much they were.
"$40."
I paused for a second. "You mean, $40 for all of them?" Even that wouldn't have been a great deal.
"No, $40 each."
I looked back down at the crate. "...Oh, okay." And walked away.
I've also seen a lot of ridiculous Craigslist ads, but I don't think anything I've seen beats Mr. $40 SMB guy.

Someone on craigslist here has been trying to sell a PS1 (the original model) with Resident Evil in the long box and a memory card for $75. For the last eight months. Three months ago he was still trying to get $100.

Difficult question.
The problem over here is there are only 2 shops that sell old games. An actual games shop and the local pawnbroker. Thing is, the pawnshop checks their prices at the gamesshop...
Any game goes for about 8-15€ card only, and some for 20€ incomplete boxed, which right now translates to 12-22$ and 30$, and that's sports and mario titles...
CD games (Sega/Sony/MS) go for 30$ minimum with very few exceptions :(
The ebay for my country and other sale sites equal those prices, or worse.
I'm in collector hell!

There's this area at the flea market I go to that has like games for every system ever (I'm talking even Jaguar and so on) and he doesn't mark any prices and just thinks up random shit when you ask for a final price. Worst thing is that I *always* see a game/system there that I just can't pass up and I give in to whatever $$$ is set to it. I mean, nothing insane like some of the stuff mentioned here, but pricier than usual.
EDIT: Although when I think about it, I've found tons of boxed AND complete games there (with promo material and everything) that I've probably paid pretty damn cheap for. It's the ultimate win/lose situation.

They were selling Zelda for $60
Mario 3 for $35
Super mario RPG for $100
Mario tennis for $27

Lets see local game store guy offers you a Free Xbox 360 with the purchase of 5 new xbox 360 games, 2 wireless controllers, and a 20 gb hard drive. Not to mention he will tack off $50 for the trade of a ps2/xbox with 10 games. So 5x60= 300 + 70 for the wirless controllers plus $80 for the hard drive= $450-50 = $400 for a beat to hell looking 360 before tax, hmm well if that ain't the best deal ever. Also has SEALED copies of Mega Man 64, Pilot Wings 64, Castlevania 64, and the ultra rare Quarter Back Clube for $60 a piece, very nice.
Other than that Craigslist with their buy any of these classics threads, or the I'm selling these PS2/Xbox games for $15 a piece and they are all sports titles tend to run the same course.

There's a used game store in Milwaukee that was selling a Genesis 2 with Sonic 1 and one controller for the low price of.... $60. They also had a Dreamcast for $70 and a Sega Saturn for $80! Then, there's the game prices... dear God:shameful:
Nearby where I live, a gamestore recently opened up. Occasionally I would try to converse with the owner about games, but he admitted that he knows very little to nothing about them and well, his prices show. $30 for a home shrinkwrapped Rad Racer 2 in the box? I'll shrinkwrap my shit for that price! He's got his copy of 'Video Game Collector' in one hand and the mouse clicking on E-Bay in the other hand... you know what? I'm just glad that I got into gaming and collecting way back when everything was reasonably priced before everybody decided to jump onto the bandwagon.
on German ebay is a seller selling Indiana Jones 3 the Action Game for $150, on disk for Atari ST. yeah sure

While in Minnesota, I stopped at the Mall of America (for the first time ever). Upstairs, there was this kiosk called "Hi-Score Games". I saw a rather large assortment of retro games, some of which I had been looking to buy for many years now.
But...... the prices! Dear God, man! $29.95 for a cart-only Super Mario Bros 2 (NES)? $26 for a cart-only Dragon Warrior (NES)? Actually, none of the retro games were below $20, regardless of their condition. There was a mint copy of Burning Rangers (SAT) for $99, which may have been a decent deal, and it was parked right next to a copy of Albert Odyssey (SAT), which was selling for the low price of $124!! Immediately, I came to the conclusion that this (shady, scummy looking) vendor knows very little about the game market and that he probably scans Ebay and prices his games according to whatever the highest bid is at the moment. When I saw two cart-only copies of Bubble Bobble (NES) at very different prices, my suspicions were confirmed.
While still in Minnesota, I stopped at this game store; "Toys", or something like that. These people must run under the exact same business model as "Hi-Score Games"..... I mean, $1100 for a standard Neo-Geo AES unit?! Dragonforce (SAT) priced at $110? They had a very nice selection of retro games (including a complete Captain Novolin, among others), but the prices meant that I would probably have to give up eating for a couple of weeks. It sure is expensive being into retro games up in Minnesota, huh?

There's a local place near me called Slacker's that has awesome prices on games and handhelds, but their console pricing is ridiculous. $60 for a Genesis 2 and $75 for a regular NES? Even their Famiclones are expensive. And you do NOT know what they wanted for a toploading NES.
Still, they have Neo-Geo pockets for $30 and Game.coms for $20.

I'm not counting the internet because everything on eBay is way too expensive already...
I think the worst I've seen is stuff from a local store like $15 for an n64 controller, $60 Sega Saturn and a SNES at around that price (horribly yellowed of course). In that store's defense, if you want a game that's not something everyone knows or a big rarity, it's usually priced pretty well. I was at a flea market in another state where a guy had a display of cart only original gameboy games at $10-$15 a piece.
Luckily my guy at the flea market knows what he's talking about.

I've been though this before. If they don't sell at my goodwill they do one of two things--> 1. They take in back to sell it in the goodwill online store 2. They crush it in a trash compactor.
Still don't get me wrong.. I love paying high prices for used, usually scribbled on (by the employees), and manhandled games!
On the other hand I keep going back because I do strike those gold deals, like finding my Sharp NES combo television for $30, a 100% in box SNES for $20, and well almost 1/10ths of the games in my collection. *sigh*
Oh on an interesting side note, I have talked with many goodwill managers around my area and apparently they cannot change the price (even sometimes under that chance it may be over priced) that a lowerm part time, most of the time ignorant (in the goodwill's case near where I live), high school aged employee puts on it because.. well they never gave me a reason.

Out here in MA, there was.....KEYWORD WAS....a store that had everything set at prices that you have all been talking about. Mario 3s for $20+ and whatnot. Not all games were marked and I'd ask for prices in which they checked a book for, and 9 times out of 10 they'd say, I don't know but its definately one of the expensive ones. Well here is what you get when you have high prices, you get no sales, so they are no longer in business. Its about time some of these overpriced people are finding out the hard way when they are greedy.

The worst I've seen locally is this one stall at the flea market I go to. It's run by a friendly, middle-aged woman who sells Game Boy games for $15 minimum, up to $30. Her Game Boy Advance games start at $25 and just go up from there. Luckily for me she's not the only one with a game stall there, so I always go to the guy that looks like he wants to gut me like a fish and I get WAY better deals from him LOL I guess that's proof enough that looks are deceiving ;)

two things that are not really the worst i can think of, but piss me off the most.
Their is a vendor inside at a flea market near me, that sells an orignal xbox for 70, and n64s for like 50.
he had a copy if super mario rpg for 50 as well. The thing is its not a flea market that gamers go to. He thinks some hillbilly is gonna spend 50 on it.
I have sold stuff their a couple times and he comes out and lowballs me, the thing is i never knew he was a vendor until recently. He tried to beg me to come down on stuff, now i want to kill him, what a crook.

Remember that the same people that overprice game items are usually the same people that underprice game items. For example, last week I went into a locally owned game store of mine that is notorious for overpricing everything they have. While going through the controller section I noticed something I haven't seen in ages. I found thrown in with all the NES controllers a NEAR MINT condition NES Arkanoid controller. The owner assumed that it was a cheap third party NES controller (in had Taito stamped on the front). He was only asking $5 for it. Needless to say, I now enjoy my new found controller.

my local flea market is insane, sadly people actually buy from him. I asked about Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast...he showed me the game and I saw a 90 Dollar sticker on it. I started coughing uncontrollably (on purpose of course) then I asked if hes serious...he then continues to try and convince me that its the best game on the Dreamcast and how mind blowingly rare the game is. Then when I said no I looked at his other stuff. After I turned down like 6 games (I was just curious about prices at this point) he tries to sell me a 2002 Nascar game for the PS2 and he says its 25 bucks. His arrogance pissed me off more then the prices, so I told him that even if he offered it to me for free I still wouldn't take it because I'd still be overpaying for it.
sometimes I wonder if hes my video game hunting competition, going around town buying everything for next to nothing and sells it for insane prices.

Dang it, I fell victim to that 'Hi-Score Games' guy. I paid $29.95 or so for SMB3. I couldn't find it anywhere for some reason, so I was desperate to have it. :-P (I actually think it was kinda worth it, I LOVE playing this game!)
Also, if you want to find some reasonably-priced retro games, stop on down to Warpzone Video Games in Winona, MN. I've bought things from there, and I've been happy with my purchases. (Although $79.95 for a NES top-loader is too much for me!)

There are a lot of awesome deals on Craiglist in the Seattle area, but there is one crazy person who keeps listing an Atari 2600 Junior + 20 games (all really common) for $150. There is usually at least 3 or 4 other 2600s for sale in the area, right around the $40 range, with 20 - 50 games.
Someone had a Dreamcast for sale a few months ago, with 3 or 4 sports games at $150.

In 2007, I was at a local Goodwill and noticed that they had two GBCs. Both were marked at that price, and both were beat up and missing their battery covers. A couple days later, I went to another Goodwill and found one in better shape with its battery cover for $4.99. That one went home with me.

there is one store down the street from me (a consignment store) that treats video games as "antiques" from the n64 back. They had a boxed 32X for sixty dollars, a ps1 for 40, and a bunch of loose NES and 2600 games for 15 dollars apiece. Ridiculous. I got the same games for 5 bucks a piece at a flea (and i feel even that is a little high.)
She is also selling a power glove in crappy condition for 22 dollars, an ROB with schmegma and no batter cover or attachments for 40. Lastly, she is selling a NES advantage with no knob and broken buttons for 10. what is her problem?!!?!

Theres a store here in San Diego that has way over priced stuff. I've talked about it before here. But I saw them this year at Comic-Con and I've been lookin for one of those gameboy cases that look like the original gameboy and I saw they had one. So just for shits a giggles I asked the owner how much it was. He said 200$. He also added that girls are using them as purses. If you ebay search them one can easily be had for under 20$ sometime withe the system and games. I see him at other places and I look but I have and will never buy from them. PS1 games like Chrono Trigger 170$!!! They do have good games but come on. Poor people who buy from them. I've talked to him about the internet and he gets all mad saying they are rarer than that. Some people will never change.

Local Music/Movie/Game store in my area called "Slacker's". You should see some of their prices.
Sega Genesis - $70
Super Nintendo - $70
Sega Saturn - $60
Sega Dreamcast - $80
All NES games - $5-$25 each
FC Twin - $70 (Bullshit!)
No kidding... the Saturn is actually cheaper than the Genesis. And they're all loose. What really pissed me off was that I had taken some games in to trade in (before I knew they rip you off) and also had some manuals. They told me that my 2600 games were too old, and that they no longer delt with them. The manuals, they straight-up told me, would go in the trash. The manuals went back home with me.
Then one other time I bought some PS games there for a fairly reasonable price, played them once, and was going to trade them back in because they sucked. They actually had the balls to tell me that the discs were too scratched to take them, after selling them to me in that condition.
The only thing I am willing to do business with them for is VHS tapes and the Gameboy cartridge cases. They keep the cases in a box underneath the counter after someone trades them in with a game. I asked about them one day and they said $.25 each, which sounds reasonable to me. Everything else they have is a total rip-off, though.

There's a thrift store near my house which used to have some decent deals, and once and awhile I'd find something neat there (Odyssey^2, near mint master system, etc.). But now... $80 per NES. They have three of them, and needless to say they have sat there for months.

Game Dude in North Hollywood charges $100.00 for cart only copies of Castlevania Dracula X for the SNES. Bring up that it's cart only and they are quick to defend that it comes in their see through plastic case and also has a Game Dude sticker on the back. Swell, not only am I supposed to pay complete price for an incomplete cart, but there are stickers on it to boot.

There's a local shop here in the mall that had a cart only Contra that they wanted 40 bucks for. But their prices are always all over the place like the 50.00 Gen and SNES consoles they have there right next to the 40.00 Dreamcast

I emailed the guy asking if he was missing a decimal in the price. I told him 10.00 sounded about right if it included shipping it to me in Minneapolis MN.

The guy I purchased my SNES from was pretty good about selling prices, but he *did* show me a copy of Chrono Trigger that was loose for about $250. I've heard $100+, but that seems like a bit much.
By the way, the SNES I purchased for $35 doesn't work, so I guess he still managed to rip me off somewhat.
