So I've been in the market for a PS3 for awhile now but I only want the 60gb version since backwards compatibility and wifi are very important to me. But I won't pay more than $450 for one so as you may have guessed I've failed to get one since they typically sell for $475+ used.

Now that this MGS4 80gb PS3 bundle for $499 is close to being released (June 12th) I'm considering buying one since I want MGS4 anyway and that would bring the consoles price down to what I want to pay.

So the only real question I have is does the Emotion Engine really make that much of a difference or does the 80GB PS3 have sufficient backwards compatibility?

This might get combined with one of the other MGS4 threads going, but I'll answer your question for you.

The Emotion Engine allows for virtually 100% backwards compat. The 80GB pushes roughly 70-75% compat due to partial emulation.

You can plug titles into this utility and see what problems, if any, exist:

Thanks, I checked out that link and input a bunch of PS2 games I have and still want to play and noticed that Persona 3: FES won't play at all on the 80GB PS3.
So is Sony still regularly updating their software emulation with new games and fixing problems?

Um, Persona 3 and Persona 3 Fes both play on the PS3. Mana Khemia, on the other hand will not. I played FES on my 80 gig a few minutes ago.

It's not that they're updating their emulation, it's just that they're not updating their list.

Far as I know, they're not going to be doing any patches or updating at all.
