Ok, so I have an old PSX that refused to play games... the disc would spin slowly once or twice and stop. Obviously the laser wasn't recognizing it as a game.

So I took it apart last night *the laser assembly that is)... I took it apart about as far as I could get it, then, with the assembly in my hand, I tested a game. It worked!

I put it all back together, and now everything works perfectly.

Thinking about it, I DID move a "seemingly" non-functional screw... there was this tiny gold one placed on the orange band connecting the laser assembly to the actual board. I just sorta twisted it a couple turns before realizing it wasnt even hooked up to anything. (maybe this is the BIAS screw I've heard mentioned? I didn't see any markings on it naming it thus, only "N" on both sides of it)

My question is... what did I do, if anything? I'm happy it's playing again, but I am interested in this sort of thing, and would like to know both for curiosity, and in case it should start messing up again.

Sounds like you did adjust the bias screw, and that's what fixed it.

which one is the bias screw though, I couldn't for the life of me find ANY labeled screws... was it that gold one?
