Well looks like my prayers have been answered. After a couple years since its last update, The popular SNES emulator for the PSP "Snes9xTyL" has been improved by a few japanese programmers. I just tried the latest release, which can be downloaded here http://pspupdates.qj.net/Snes9xTYLsmcm-23-05-08-Release-speed-increase-noted/pg/49/aid/120473 and I have noticed significant improvement in speed and emulation. Even Rockman and Forte plays at 100% speed with no problems.

Hope you PSP users find this as exciting as I do!

Great news; can't wait to try this. The state of SNES emulation on the PSP has always been a bummer to me, especially compared to GBA emulation.

Thanks a bunches for the heads up.

You're welcome. I agree, I was always very disappointed in the emulation. I even went to the original develpers message boards and they swore that the emulation was as good as it could possibly get and if you didnt like it than too bad. Gues they were dead wrong huh.

amazing, thanks so much! i cant wait to try it. my psp has quickly turned into a console of choice (other than my 360 of course) since it has already such great games, tv out, and amazing emulation and portability. plus: PS1 library.

is there a compatibility list anywhere to see which games play well w/ this and which do not? can you guys post youre results?

There isn't but I will post my experience soon.
Rockman and Forte JP, 100% speed and sound. Last time I tried this, it totally crashed my psp!
More to come.

More good news, dragon warrior 1&2, which also crashed my system previously, seems to work flawlessly.

Well darn, Super Mario Kart and Adventures of Batman & Robin both run at 40fps (meh).

Soulblazer runs full speed (thus far), at least.

I believe you have to tweak the settings slightly. PSP accelerated accur software. 300 or 33 mhz.

I believe 300/approx were the default. I tried approx/333 and accur/333, then I went ahead and chopped the sound quality in half before disabling sound emulation entirely and barely got any improvement in speed from all of that tinkering. Looks like Mario Kart runs at 37-46 FPS unless you're willing to enable frameskipping (I'm not).

But hey, Soul Blazer. I need to try Illusion of Gaia next.

edit - Illusion of Gaia seems to work just fine. Woo!
edit - Shadowrun is running full speed. Shame I never really cared for the SNES version. :(
edit - Demon's Crest starts of promising with the 60/60 but then drops to 50/60 once you get to the first area. Boo-urns.
edit - Jurassic Park fluctuates between 46-60fps; runs at 50/60 when indoors. As if the FPS segments weren't already slow enough.

Oh man, this is sweet. I've got it running Cameltry at a solid 60 fps with vsync and 44kHz audio. My only complaint is that I'm going to need a bigger memory stick now. Ha ha.

I haven't touched PSP emulation in quite some time. My PSP (fatty) is still at firmware 1.5.

Thanks for the heads up.

SNES is always a surprisingly resource heavy emulator.

I was actually pretty satisfied with the previous version on SNES9x for what I wanted to run, but I'll definitely check this one out too.

Time to update to the latest firmware and grab PicoDrive 1.40b, Unofficial gpSP kai 3.3, and fMSX PSP 3.5.1! :)

Thought that was another language for a second...

Going to need a larger memory card duo.

Going off topic, do the hardware specs of the DS basically render this kind of emulation impossible?

sort of. it really depends on the ingenuity of the coders. there was some basic attempts at snes emulation on the gba, with mixed results but some games DID work (albeit badly). the ds is superior to the gba, so will be improvement, as for how much is up for debate. i honestly would not hold my breath. the psp 'scene' is perhaps the best, most widespread, popular and advanced homebrew/hack scene ive ever seen for a commercial console (yes, even greater than the DC and GP32) and its taken them over 3 years to get to where it is now.

i wouldnt say its impossible, but it is indeed extremely difficult and unlikely. especially with the psp as an alternative for on-the-go SNES gaming.

yet ANOTHER update, this time, mario kart is good! Keep up the good work!

"This application, in case you're asking, is an SNES emulator for the Sony PlayStation Portable. Based on the information we've gathered, this new test build carries wireless ad-hoc support and improved overall performance. Some of the users over at DCEmu noted that games like Mario Kart run well on frameskip 1, while a bug in Final Fantasy 2 was also fixed.

That said, we remind the readers that this new release is labeled as a test build, meaning that you'll want to keep on the lookout for any possible bugs. Enjoy the download, and be sure to visit us again in case we receive word regarding any possible updates. "
