I was just talking to a friend of mine about various games, and he mentioned Star Control 2. I told him I don't play PC games, as I find them to be more trouble than they're worth, and he insisted I look at Star Control 2, saying he was confident it was right up my alley, I'd love it, and I should investigate it even though I don't usually play PC games.
OK, so now I've checked it out online, mainly at Wiki, and I'm definitely interested. I saw mentions from late 2005/early 2006 of a port-in-progress of the game to the Xbox (!), and if that was ever completed I'd love to play it there, instead of on the PC. BUT, I can't actually find anything that seems to confirm that a final version was ever released for the Xbox.
Does anybody know anything about this? Ever tried the Xbox version?

Never released on Xbox. Get the 3DO version.
edit: I'm pretty sure PDF or someone else around here has the proto for StarCon, which was to be the latest iteration of the series to my knowledge. That was more like Colony Wars though, whereas SC2 was a resource management/2D kind of deal...the closest thing that you may have played was Dreamcast's Armada, but SC2 was much deeper than that game.

If you have a Genesis, there was a port of the original that was pretty fun back in the day.

I liked Starflight on the Genesis, which is what had me thinking I'd like this as well. According to the Wiki, SC2 was influenced by Starflight.
I'll give it a shot on my laptop.

From reading the topics about it, it's not clear whether the Xbox port (which was a homebrew port of the open source Ur-Quan Masters project) was complete or not. The files are there for download at the bottom of the Wikipedia page, though. Give them a try if your Xbox is set up for playing homebrew. I'd love to hear how playable it is.
I was always pulling for an Ur-Quan Masters port on the Dreamcast back when the DC homebrew scene was more active. There's a GP2X port, too, apparently. Also PSP. No DS, though, dammit.
...word is bondage...

Motion carried. Go get a 3DO copy. You won't be disappointed.

The proto in question was for the PS1, and you can find a review (with video of the game play) here (http://www.thelogbook.com/pixel/starcon-ps1/). I haven't heard of an Xbox port before, homebrew or otherwise.

Ha! I just posted a torrent request for Ur-Quan Masters on Xbox-Sky last week because I couldn't find it anywhere else. Didn't even think to check the Wiki. Thanks! Going to give this a play tomorrow.
