I did not see a forum for newbies so I figured I would post in here. I have been on this site for awhile now, just reading the posts and looking at the awesome photos of peoples collections. I just want to say its awesome to see so many people who love older games like myself.

The reason for my post is I have been thinking about collecting for some time now. I dont plan to be a HARDCORE collector, I just want to get back the games I had when I was younger and get the games I always wanted back then. My favorite I would have to say would be the Sega Genesis. Granted I love Nintendo, but if I were to collect anything it would be Sega related. Over the past month I have purchased 1 Sega CD, 2 32X's & 5 Genesis(3 Genesis II's & 2 original genesis'). Actually it was funny how I got most... I picked up 4 genesis', the sega CD, 13 games & one of the 32X's for 20 bucks from a lady off of Craigslist. Granted I had to drive through 2 cow pastures to get to her house but either way it was a deal.

I guess I got a little off subject there... The question I have is what are some of the rarest titles for any Sega console? I am not looking for imports, just US titles. Also, can anyone recommend any good sites for classic games(For sale, discussions, lists, ect...)? I just enjoy reading about classic games and any other sites that I could vist would entertain me as well.

I appreciate any of your feedback.
Jeff

o_O Sounds pretty hardcore to me! I recommend checking out www.sega-16.com and visiting their forum for lists of the rarest Genesis games. Can't help you with other consoles though.

If you're asking what the rarest games would be for the Sega Genesis, I would suggest using the online rarity guide on the Digital Press site. Going by U.S. releases, the Blockbuster World Video Game Championships II will be the hardest to find, but if you only care about retail releases, you'll be looking at items such as The Miracle Piano Teaching System, Action 52 and a handful other rarities. Hands-down the item to have for the 32X is Spider-Man: Web of Fire. There's nothing too extravagantly, super rare for the Sega CD, but titles such as Snatcher, Time Gal, Popful Mail and Keio Flying Squadron have some very solid values to them.

Ultimately, what you want to collect is up to you, though. Those are just a few examples of the higher tier titles for the system so do a little footwork around this very site and others to track down Sega titles by rarity. Good luck and above all, have fun collecting!

Mentioned previously, right here on Digital Press you can call up all kinds of lists from the online rarity guide. I selected Genesis, US Releases, and Rarity of greater than 6 (out of 10). Got the following results:

Genesis U.S. Game Releases Action 52 Active Ent 7 1993 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Aero the Acro-Bat 2 SunSoft 7 1994 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Aerobiz: Supersonic Koei 7 1994 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II Acclaim 9 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Joshua: The Battle of Jericho Wisdom Tree 7 1994 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Miracle Piano Teaching System, The SW Toolworks 8 1992 USA
Genesis U.S. Game Releases Zero: The Kamikazee Squirrel SunSoft 7 1994 USA

One of the best, and not super omg limited only/proto rare items, is Panzer Dragoon Saga for the saturn. An Ace game but it still commands top dollar ><

A great site to keep track of your future collection is www.rfgeneration.com. They're just getting the site back up and running, but they have excellent collection tools. I sure wish I had started using them back when I first started collecting, would have sure made my life easier. ;)

And, of course, nothin' beats good ol' DP right here. Excellent rarity guide, helpful community for the most part. I HIGHLY recommend picking up the DP print guides and a quarterly subscription to Video Game Collector. Not just for the game values, but fun reading overall!

As for Sega Collections, the Genesis is one of the better classic systems to collect CIB (complete in box) for since many games came in a tough plastic box instead of the disintegrating paper boxes most games of that era came in. With such a huge library, there are lots of different approaches to starting a collection besides rarity. What about collecting every title made by a certain developer/publisher? Treasure, Konami, Capcom, and Sega themselves have awesome libraries for the Genesis. Or maybe every role-playing game for the Sega CD? Pick something you would both enjoy playing and would be proud to see lined up on a shelf.

Just make sure you are having fun. ;)

Just looked at your location and saw that you are around my neck of the woods. Check out "The Exchange" stores in Pittsburgh for classic games, there are a few stores spread out around that area. Here in Erie is "Game Zone," a mom-n-pop store I help out alot. And out in Ashtabula OH is "Music-N-Games". I keep a list of gaming stores everywhere I know of so anytime I find myself out of town, I know where to hunt. There is a game store map project underway in another forum that should also be helpful in tracking them down.

I just wanted to thank you all for your replies. As for collecting... Like I said I plan on buying the games I had the most fun with when I was younger - then move on to stuff that I always wanted to play or never bought, then go from there with collecting. I think this will make things a bit more enjoyable and I will have fun playing all of these games I had a blast with years ago.

As for the last guy who posted - I have been to The Exchange in Monvoeville, PA. Your right, they got tons of classic games there and the prices dont seem too steep as well. I plan to make some time to visit that store this weekend. So far I have picked things up from eBay but its tough when you get a good deal on a game but pay 3 times the amount for shipping. Oh well, what can you do.
