I am looking to buy a PS2 from a friend of mine so I took it home to see if it worked. It ran my PS1 games fine, but stays on the PS2 menu when I insert a PS2 game. Neither blue bottomed or clear bottomed ga,es work. Anyone have any advice on what could be wrong?

I don't know man, I've seen this a few times myself, and due to the quanities of sightings, I just figured it is another side effect of the laser dieing. Good luck holmes.

try setting some weight on the lid if it a slim ps2

I have to put a gamecase on top of the ps2 for it to work sometimes

Before anything else, try cleaning your laser's lens. Easy as pie on a slim, challenging on a phatty. A lens cleaning disc may not necessarily work.

I have a phatty. Would I need to open the PS2 up?

Yes but its very simple. Just remove all the screws on the bottom of the ps2. Then remove the tiny screws on top of the disc drive. then take the black plastic cover of the laser(you can just pinch the top and bottom to take of or some covers have little prongs that click in that you just need to lift from the laser). Then get a Q tip and rubbing alcohol and gently clean the top and bottom of the laser lens. This will normaly fixes the issue. If this doesnt fix it then you either need to realign the laser with the plastic dials or you might need a new laser all together. If you do turn out to need a new laser you can find them rather cheap online.

Here is a little tutorial to help but its really not that difficult.
