Heya,
I already started with a wanted thread in buy/sell - however I've been out of the loop mostly, especially on prices.
It seems like Gennies have gone up on eBay... I remember Flack getting them for $5 from anyone and everyone. SNES too... but I'm not surprised by that.
NES seems to have dropped, are we hitting the 16-bit nostalgia point?
I ask because looking to get back in, especially now during an economic downturn, I don't want to do the same things when I first started collecting, like pay $80 for a SMS system only when I could have found one on here for $40. Good lesson learned there! :D
Oh, and Hi again to all that remember me. I hope y'all don't need an OT mod 'cause... no. :D

Making sure you only buy games you actually like is another good idea, unless you're serious about the investment aspect of it. Then just get whatever is going to go up in value ;D
Were you into (and will you be again) loose games or "collector quality" stuff? I know I've got some stuff about that I need to get rid of in the coming months.
Also, good to see you again :)

Probably on the Genny side, as the whole Sega/CD/32X and even Saturn have soft spots for me. NES not so much, I was used to loose stuff as a kid, so I really just want stuff I can play.
Of course if I get a candy cab, gonna make a damn shrine to that thing ;)
Good to see you're still here, Ed! I saw Lady Jaye too, hopping around on here in the 10 min. I've been back... lol

Craigslist.
Got many great finds for a low price there. Search the ads in their games and electronics sections and (if you can spare the gas) garage sales are a good place for a bargain.
Ebay should only be considered as a last resort, especially since the profitmongers demand high prices for their "rare" games. On top of that, they don't bother cleaning up the games they have.
That's all I have to say except, Welcom Back.

*tips hat* thank y'all, it's nice to be back. Hell, I see my favorite TMBG song even remembered the old username, heh.
It's kind of like coming home in a way... now I can write to someone about a "Neo Geo" and not get a blank stare.
Or... say "linux" without getting "What's that?" ... like the comcast tech asked me. Even my "never touched a computer in my life" roommate thought it was ridiculous, heh. :D
Craigslist has gotten pretty good of late, although around here in the coastal NH/ME/MA region it's mostly NES and Genesis stuff... not bad at all since I love those systems but finding a TG-16 in the wild or a Saturn is a taller order.
However, to clear up my original post, I'm more curious about value in a bit more of an abstract way... like 4 years ago NES and to a lesser degree SNES was gold just base-system wise. Gennies could be had even with a small game bundle for around $10 on eBay. That's not the case anymore.
So is it because the Genesis has more "upside" to the collecting society today... or a matter of some fans catching up...?
By the same note, the NES is showing "downside" - systems and games seem to go for less unless they're the "always money" titles (Final Fantasy, later Dragon Warriors, etc...). Systems seem to be in a glut, and cheap to get like Gennies used to be a while back.
I guess I'm asking if there are systems that I should watch out for if they're on the cheap because their value has gone up. I know Turbo Grafx systems seem to be gold of late, so I'll probably have to wait on to start that collection again unless I find a deal.

Finding those two in the wild is a tall order anywhere, not counting coastal California and Southern Florida. Time, patience, and constant surveillance are key to a successful game harvest, and I'm proof positive of that. Recently, I just got Air Bonk, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, and 10 other games for $150. A few months before that I got 23 Turbografx 16 and CD games, including Valis 2, Y's 3, and Splatterhouse, for a whooping $65 total.
BTW, have you dabbled with PS3's Cell architecture and programming?

I honestly haven't seen a PS3 that wasn't in a store kiosk so I'll have to say 'no'. Do you know much about it?
