View Full Version : How do you tell a repack?

I just found an unopen copy of sega columns at a thrift store and was wondering how I could tell if it is a repack or original packaging.

Anyone have any guides to tell repacks?

You don't.

Might as well open it to see if everything's there and undamaged.

Genesis factory shrink wrap is double-thick (pretty close to thin plastic) and won't have any type of extreme "wrinkles" or "bunching" around corners.

I BELIEVE due to the built in hang-tabs on the boxes that the top portion of the wrap will have an opening ... might be on the bottom too.

like what frankie said. there would a bunching of wrap on the edges in some cases a wavy kinda seal. its like they took 2 pieces of wrap around the object and heat sealed it together. if its a re-pack the people who did it wont have expensive machinery probably and so they dont damage the product they leave more space on the edges than with a huge company grade package maker thing

If it's graded, it's legit. If it's not graded, it's a reseal. Only trust graded copies of games.

Your paranoia upsets me. What makes the grading process so legitimate? What do they know that someone here doesn't?

Not an expert on shrink wrap, but it does look suspicious. Worst comes to worst you will open it to find a copy of super rare NBA Jam.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's a reseal.

One of the easiest ways to know a reseal is when the plastic insert holder of a dvd or clamshell case is hit by a heat gun and starts to get funky. Another giveaway is how stupid a game case looks having a hang tab sealed so you can't use it :)

Thats the first thing I thought of when I picked it up.

Ah well, it only cost me 3 dollars so its no big deal. At least I have learnt how to tell if a game has been resealed.

Thanks for your help guys.

are there any certified or accredited video game graders? i've never come across and have only seen a handful of pictures of "graded" games. whats to stop someone like me from just making their own grade scale and grading games. plus whats the point of having a game sealed in a plastic cube so you can never interact with it. I get the point of collecting sealed but collecting graded seems way too expensive and really not that much more secure. feel free to link me to some sources of info that will prove me wrong.

open it up and see what game is actually inside and see if you have super rare nba jam or not.

The thing is you don't tell at all. All packaging is flawed. Even a game is repacked it was never originally packed from it's origin destination. Plastic wrapping just prevents ware.

About that tab I don't think Genesis games was ever packaged to begin with. Even SNES games that had a tab was never packaged or tab to begin with.

I mean who is that crazy to want games just for the little package logo on the outside?

That is going a bit too far.

This is, hands down, the worst idea ever.

Such a blanket statement is the worst kind to make especially when there is no evidence that the graders know anything about anything.

I'm pretty sure boatofcar was being sarcastic. Am I right?

Lets hope so...I suppose I don't really believe that anyone who is actually into video games could put any faith in grading...

...it was just really hard to find any sarcasm in that comment...then again, that sort of thing is usually lost on the internet.

Does anyone have reason to believe that clamshell Genesis games were originally sealed plastic when Sega shipped them out? I know that some stores sealed them before resale (in which case, the seal job might be good or bad), but I don't think they came sealed from the factory.

They absolutely came sealed from the factory, as did Sega Master System games, which used a similar clamshell.

I worked at two different video-rental stores at the time the Genesis and the SNES were still shipping new games to stores, and all Genesis games came factory sealed with the double-heavy grade shrink-wrap.

Hi. I'm new here and this is my first reply to any thread. I used to work at Babbage's back in the day, and we did a lot of re-wrapping of games. From the pics you posted, the game definitely looks like a re-wrap. The plastic on the factory sealed Genesis titles was usually very stiff and thick. The wrap we used was much thinner and was subject to burning at the edges, so definitely look for that whenever you buy sealed games. SNES games are easier to spot because factory sealed games had a seam in the middle of the wrap, while re-wrapped games are usually sealed at the edges.

Anyway, that's my two cents, and I'm glad I found this place - very cool.

nah you cant, i have a sealed vectorman 2 as well. cardboard games were sealed differently than plastic games.

although to be honest, as i remember, plastic box games really were sometimes sealed over their hangtab.

interesting note: japanese mega drive games werent sealed in plastic at all. just a 'SEGA' blue & white sticker over the case (between the 2 opening halves). i think i have a couple somewhere...

My reply was sarcastic. I thought that would be evident given the firestorm of criticism the VGA has gotten on these boards of late.

To those of you who just recently joined, you might want to read up on what's going on in the world of graded sealed video games.

It begins...video game grading (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115443)

Reportedly, neither were most (any?) of the other cardboard box games of the time - i.e. Famicom, Game Boy, Super Famicom, N64. Nothing until CD-ROM games like PC-Engine CD games was likely to be sealed. X68000 didn't have plastic wrapping, just (at least some games) a little seal sticker which varied from game to game (dependent on the manufacturer).
