I'm trying to get the Nightmare achievement on the XBLA version of Doom. All I need to do is complete any level on Nightmare difficulty, so I'm trying to complete the first level, E1M1.

Ultra-Violence (the level right below Nightmare) isn't too bad, but damnit I can barely kill anything on Nightmare, and the enemies I do kill respawn in like 30 seconds!!!

Does anyone play Doom on Nightmare? If so, what's the secret?!? I just wanna beat the first level!!!

Wouldn't you know it - I checked a few vids on youtube on how to beat E1M1 on Nightmare and the consensus seems to be: just run for it, forget about everything except pressing the button to open the door to the outside, grab the blue armour, then make a mad dash to the end. One guy online did it in 9 seconds.

I tried the "just run for it" strategy and it worked - got my 10G :)

But seriously, who plays Doom on Nightmare? Why?

It's a good challenge.

Oh and tidbit of info: Most console ports of Doom cut out Nightmare mode entirely. Presumably this was due to respawning.

Nightmare. It's called that for a bloody reason, mate.

Back on the shareware version of Doom my friend and I had a challenge where we'd see how far we could get in Nightmare mode. Ultra Violence was cake for us, but we'd barely get into the second room on the first level before getting owned. The trick was to never stop moving. You got really good at shooting while moving though. Also, shotgun was essential.

Whine, whine. Newbies thinking they can walk all over the classics to stroke their ego. Have some respect for DOOM! ;) You've gotta put your time into it like everything else.

I'll tell you what though: I've done the first two levels of DOOM on Nightmare, no more yet. They get exponentially harder after the first level, which I can move through fairly slowly. It IS blessed hard. Of course, that's the way it's supposed to be.

Also, I heard that some of the bonus levels available on the Xbox are broken.

Hah! Newbies. Funny. I remember trying to download the original Doom shareware from the id ftp server at launch and having it go down repeatedly because so many people were trying to access it. It was absolutely crawling even according to my 28.8Kbps modem. When I finally got it, it ran beautifully on my 486 ;)

I did the military base today and it seemed to work fine. That's the only one I've tried so far. When you say xbox, I'm assuming you mean the XBLA version and not the original xbox version that was on the Doom 3 disc.

I remember messing around with the difficulty levels and just gunning it on level 1, of course it was easy to remember where everything was, so getting through it was pretty simple.

See, if there's anything you could describe as "bad," it's that. The permanent newbie mindset is that "oh it's hard = bad. I shan't try harder" ;)

Somehow, I think the game let you off easy! Only one level on Nightmare? Weak! And that's really their fault, not yours, since now you're just scared of Nightmare and didn't have to plan your playthrough carefully to spot ammo and health as needed. Shame...

It appears it doesn't apply to your version of the game. This is what I mean: http://www.classicdoom.com/xboxspec.htm

I still need to download those and play 'em sometime.

The best parts of Doom 2:
1) Great learning curve
2) Wonderful multi-player action
3) WAD editors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdwoSdecYbc&feature=related) galore available
4) Hidden levels that goes to Wolfenstein 3D (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEU6MEgmETo), Doom style

1): Still too much space between Ultra-Violence! and Nightmare.
4): Two levels actually :D

I guess it depends what you're looking for. Personally I'm just looking to have some fun and don't want to spend the time/effort in playing through on Nightmare.

I guess - this Duke Nukem conversion looks fantastic! (although I think its only one level)

And now we understand why Achievements are worthless.

You must understand that Nightmare! was added as a gag when iD received complaints that Ultra-Violence was too easy. Hell, some versions even warn you that the damn thing is unfair before you can start.

Were Achievements added as a gag as well? :P

The mode's enduring popularity combined with the ease of Ultra-Violence should have clued them in that something in the middle would be a good idea.

Of course, DOOM 64 seems more balanced in this regard. Quake as well, even though its Nightmare mode doesn't have particularly fast or respawning monsters.

Why? There were so many things that Duke3D did better than Doom, why take a step back?

Ultra-Violence is very manageable. I had a lot of fun tearing through it on XBLA on UV. Nightmare on the other hand, after attempting level 2 and realizing what was going on (with the respawning) I promptly went back to UV. :)

I agree 100% with this. The tougher enemies are a nice change over Hurt-me-plenty, but the respawning in Nightmare mode just kills me. They don't respawn at all in UV do they? If so, I've never noticed it.

They don't respond and don't hit nearly as hard or shoot as accurately. I love Doom, but I don't find Nightmare mode that fun. I do have to say that I really enjoy the controls on the 360 version of Doom. I hadn't played it in years and this thread prompted me to download it. By far the best console version in terms of control.

I like the XBLA port, I picked it up mainly for the local multiplayer.

I have a feeling this might only be my console, but for some reason when I've started a new game, single player multiplayer whatever, and try to quit to the main menu, it freezes every single time. Also, when I die say midway through an episode, it forgets whatever weapons/ammo I've accumulated and starts me off with a pistol... not so good. This also seems to be the case when loading a saved game.
