Welcome, you came to the right place. I am an Odyssey 2 collector and have a CIB US set, including many of the homebrews. The O2 is a great vintage system, that has some unique games that are still fairly reasonably priced. Pending on your budget, here are some things that I recommend:

the multicart....a cheap and easy way to get all the games in one shot. I have one and love it. I got mine from here:

http://www.classicgamecreations.com/order.html

I recommend if you can find the voice, it is kind a fun accesory that adds some cheesy voice ot certain games

I also recommend the system with the silver controllers, as they detatch from the unit and can be replaced.

My personal favorites for the system that I recommend
smitheenes....lob rocks at each others castles...two player fun
Pick Axe Pete
KC munhkin and the sequel KCs Crazy Chase...pac man style games
UFO
Attack of the timelord

That will get you started, I am sure that others will voice(no pun intended) what else is great.

This is a good site for homebrew games as well, I have bought many from there

That didn't take long at all. I'll make sure to keep an eye out for the second version and the multi cart. I picked up 2 model ones i guess, the one with the hard wired joy sticks and 18 games including conquest of the world loose and several R3s and system boxed for 30$. Idk if thats good or not but I'm ok with it. Will this work with the standard modern adapters like for a 2600 or will I have to have something else or just and old tv?

I will definitely second Pick Axe Pete... I can't tell you how much time I spent on that cart, and I first played it in 2002! :)

I think my O2 uses standard adaptors to play on the TV. I one day want mine to get AV modded to show off those detailed graphics!

awesome I'm excited to get it in. How easy is it to come by games. I've never seen one around here in the wild and ebay seems to have the same few games in every lot. I'm thinking about maybe going for a complete set if I like the system. The guide says theres two R6s and power lords and I've already got one of the 6s coming in even though it is loose. Guess I'm asking whats a good price for power lord loose and quest for the rings boxed and if I'll see them in the next year. Theres a quest for 35 on ebay right now.

Decent console but good games are few, I'm 2 away from a complete set but it was a fun console to complete.

I had an Odyssey II when it came out back in the day. I played the crap out of it. Dad ended up throwing it away, but I scored one recently on craigslist. Check out my blog about it at 1up:

Collecting O2 stuff is pretty easy, completing a full set is harder but not impossible. you just have to be patient. Finding the master strategy series games complete is a pain. I have seen power lords go from the range of $130 to $175 CIB....loose it will set you back about $100 when you find it. This is just an estimation, and ebay can be tricky. If you find it, I would just buy it.

I'm stunned Earl (PDF) hasn't popped in here yet. He's a big fan of Ye Olde O2.

It might just be me, but I like Speedway! / Spin-Out! / Crypto-Logic!.

These are three games you can just pop in and play. And they are all conveniently located in one cart.

It also doesn't hurt that this is one of the most common carts.

For me, I think the game I spent the most time with was Killer Bees!

This is the stash I've got coming in with the systems, and the other lot im buying comes with everything else listed on you guys lists except for the multi cart, power lord, and quest. So I think I got a good pile of entertainment coming my far. Any other recommendations?

Yes. Get thee to PackratVG.com (http://www.packratvg.com) and get some homebrews! The homebrews for the Odyssey2 are almost consistently across-the-board good. Kill The Attacking Aliens, Puzzle Piece Panic, Planet Lander and especially Mr. Roboto are awesome.

You might also want to check in at the videopac.nl forums and get acquainted with your fellow O2 collectors around the globe; that's also the hub of a surprisingly active repro scene for unreleased stuff like Tutankham and Robot City.

I already recommended packrat up above, but I did not mention the videopac.nl forums. I will have to check it out now, thanks. Also, any word on any upcoming homebrews coming out?

Ted S. is supposedly still working on Pick Axe Pete II, but very slowly because of that whole real life business that goes on from time to time. Which I can completely understand.

I have a real soft spot for the Odyssey2, despite never owning one as a kid.

I'm currently 9 carts away from having all the original retail releases. 8 should be easy to get. That last one though...boy howdy.

Once I finish those up, I'll start looking at these homebrews.

i've never seen a O2 with the deatachable controllers. how much rarer are they? are they much more expensive?

I'm only missing 4 (Power Lords! - obviously!, Nimble Numbers Ned!, Great Wall Street Fortune Hunt!, and I've Got Your Number!) from a complete U.S. set! I'm a huge fan of Killer Bees!, Smithereens!, and KC's Krazy Chase (That laugh rules!)

BTW, I can't get PT Barnum's Acrobats! to begin at all. Is there something special you have to do to make the game work? Smithereens works great on 2 players, even with a wired, subpar working 2P controller.

I'll add another vote for Killer Bees and Smithereens. KB is a rather original game setup and is very fun, and Smithereens rivals the best quick, pick-up-and-play 2p action games.

Also, try to find the voice modulator and the cart Type and Tell!. It lets you use the membrane keyboard to type in words and then you get the cool retro 70s/80s computer voice repeat what you typed.

You're not a true old school game collector until you've heard a three decade-old game machine say "mmm, boobies."

Um, my friend tried it. Yeah. Honest.

Or

"Would you like to play a game?"

Not much more exprensive, but maybe a little more($20 to $30 more) I heard that you can mod your system to take standard atari 9 pin controllers. Now that would be cool.

This topic made me fire up my console and play some Pick Axe Pete!

BTW, Teds Homebrew games kick some serious ass.

Yeah man, great console. Very unique and interesting. I love the Odyssey 2! Found mine at a flea market for 5 dollars in box about 5 years ago. Not a huge collector, but I've got some good titles.
