My friend Gideon Zhi gave me this video link. I know, we have a Youtube thread, and I apologize for not posting this there, but this video DESERVES ITS OWN THREAD.

...Wow. It's as if they were just reading the lines. Almost no inflection, whatsoever. Resident Evil's VA was better...

This makes the actors in Tales of Destiny II (Eternia) and Mega Man 8 look like Marlon Brando.

It's not even funny bad like Castle Shikigami 2. It's just...sleep inducing.

Yes, it says so right there on the video info. But honestly, the script is painfully bad... and don't go visit their forums, they've been overrun by porn spammers of the really nasty variety. :(

LOL!!! WTF??? That dub has to be intentionally bad. There is NO WAY someone could be THAT uninspired naturally!

Also, what is this sacrilege!?!?!? Why the HELL did they take a BAD @$$ like Yuri and change his name to Uru? Then to make things worse they got some guy with a lisp to do the dub.

Seriously, I have heard bad dubs before, but this is a whole new genre of bad dubbing!!! Props to O3 entertainment!!! :hail:

The English voice "acting" was "performed" by the CEO's family members:

All joking aside, Chaos Wars has the potential to be one of the rarest (in the truest sense of the word) and hard to find games of the PS2 generation.

All the pieces are there: Insanely small print run, Single store exclusive (Gamestop), not even enough copies to fulfill initial pre-orders, solid SRPG gameplay = future collectors item. Horrible voice-overs aside, you need to pick this one up NOW if you care about such things.

I like Tales of Destiny 2's voice actors.... except Meredy.

This however, is enough to warrant the Japanese option. I have never set any game to the Japanese option before. :P

listen to the man
got a sealed copy waiting for me at work...will be picking that up today. As seeing as I don't have the time to play it right now it will sit around sealed for a long time...hopefully gaining value.

Just to give a little insight on the rarity of this game...GameStop is the only store getting this item...I live in a pretty decent sized city of which has 3 different GameStops...of the 3 there are a total of 6 copies floating around the city (2 came to each store). With no word of getting anymore in as of yet.

I'm pretty sure this game's store exclusivity and future rarity is due to O3's half-assed translation and dubbing. Seriously, they couldn't source the voice acting to a professional dubbing studio?

It wouldn't surprise me if this is O3's swan song.

What are you relying on to claim it has an "insanely small print run"? There are over 3,800 Gamestop/EB stores in the United States. If every store just got 2-3 copies as has been reported, that's 10K copies just at retail. I would assume they did an equal number for on-line sales as it's back in stock. That's 20,000 copies. I'm guessing the number is more like 25K which is a lot for a game that is unlikely to sell to even the hardest core gamers given it's poor reviews and production values. I suspect this one will get a price drop before selling out.

You might be right, you might be wrong. We just don't know.

As you pointed out, for a 'future rarity,' hard to get game or pricey game speaks the exclusivity of one retailer, the niche genre, a very late release for a console, and that it is a SRPG.

All of the above affects supply and demand, but there is still uncertainty about these two most important factors to determine a hard to get game. We don't know the exact print run, and we can't predict the demand.

I am very cautious about the 'future rarity'- predictions. The list of games noone expected to be rare is long, and the graveyard is filled with supposedly rare games which turned out to be all too common.

About the terrible voice acting: this might be one reason to increase the demand for the game if coupled with solid gameplay. A forgivable bad gameplay element makes the game quirky and even more fun...one more reason to collect it and to own.

I don't have a problem with voice acting being done "in the group" so to speak. Trey Parker and Matt Stone do 80% of all their own voice work. The problem is that this acting isn't really acting at all but rather just reading. This is "Recite this line you've never read before into the microphone. Got it? Done. Moving on." People with no acting experience can easily do better than this. The problem is the "actors" clearly never got a chance to see the script before having to perform it. If you don't know what you're going to say until you actually read the words you can't determine how to deliver the lines.

25k is a lot? no
poor reviews? no
average at the very worst:

this game is averaging about 7/10...i don't find that poor, and I doubt many others do as well.

I haven't heard much good about the actual gameplay (something that I guess is common with Idea Factory games?) and with as much inflation goes into review scores, I'd be hesitant to purchase it based on score alone.

Aside from a truly awful localization and a mashup of B-list characters, what does this game really offer to fans of SRPGs? If someone's experience with SRPGs is limited solely to Nippon Ichi and Squaresoft titles (as many people these days are), why should they go out of their way to spend $40 on this now rather than just wait for the inevitable price drop that similarly poorly received limited release games have had (such as Chulip, which got marked down from a low budget price to a super budget price)?

Wow, the intro...just, wow. I thought the first video was bad, but the intro makes me cringe. It's English, but I still don't know what the hell they're talking about.

And wait, Yuri is Uru? ;alskja;lksdl;kasdhgk;lahfdglkjahg;kjreht;auk352pi u21opi11!!lf;aksj WHY?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I laughed most when I saw that they spelled "through" as "thru".

The original name of the character in question is Urmnaf "Uru" Bort Hyuga as on the original Japanese version. Uru is his nickname.

This was changed to Yuri Volte Hyuga when localised for English-speaking audiences.

Evidently, they were translating from the source (as you should) and ended up with Uru.

I blame the price of gas. To come in under/at budget the CEO had to take the mini-van to work with the family in tow via car-pool. Illegals work for cheap but, family works for free! LOL

Now that would be funny. If developers started getting illegal immigrants to do the voice acting.

For a super-niche title 25K is a lot. There are some PS2 games that never even sell that many.
The average is 66% on the site you linked to which is a D or well below average, particularly in this day and age of easy grading. I believe Famitsu game it a score even lower than that. I would be curious to hear from people who actually have played it, but at $40, I expect above average on the PS2 in this era.

Pedro was just beaten to another voice acting gig. Damn that Gomez! Now how will Pedro feed his son and sexy wife? Waaaaa! LOL

At least Ford and Chevy can now sell their rusting inventory of V8 pick-ups to game studios now. ;) 8 voice actor limit to ride in the bed. LOL

I've heard bad voice acting before but damn, why did they even bother dubbing?

I went to go pick up a copy of Etrian Odyssey II yesterday, saw this game on the shelf and decided to buy it (I hadn't heard of it before, but that didn't stop me :)). Apparently the store had 2 copies -- one sealed, and one display copy. I didn't even realize it was GameStop exclusive until I got home and looked closer at the price sticker while I was peeling it off.

Like everyone else is saying, I think this is easily the worst voice work I've ever heard in any game, for any platform -- and that's saying something, because I've played a lot of games and have heard a lot of terrible voice acting. I get the impression that all of the voice work was done by three people, and none of them really bothered to disguise this fact very much. The lack of proper timing or emotion is as if the 'actors' had been handed the lines and were reading them for the very first time, without any context whatsoever. I don't even think that the recording was done in a professional studio -- the sound quality and some awkward sounding cuts make me think this could have been done in someone's house with a PC microphone or something similar.

I guess that the SRPG aspects aren't so bad from what I've read (I don't like SRPGs and I didn't try any of the actual gameplay myself), and my sister was pointing out the characters from Gungrave and Shadow Hearts on the box (the game was a collaboration of the companies that made those games, so the underlying game itself has at least a grain of credibility), but to weigh the localized version down with such terrible voice work is a shame -- amusing, but a shame. Maybe not a future rarity, but probably a cult classic that has a serious claim to infamy. :)
