I believe there is another thread for the game floating around, but I'll answer the question anyway. The reason why the game is praised is because it has very deep game play, a mature storyline and it's fairly difficult compared to majority of the RPGs released this past generation. It's also noted for being one of the very few M rated RPGs.

Because Megaten games are awesome.

Annoying that only because of a freakin tie-in with Devil May Cry did we get Nocturne and thankfully the games that have followed. What the hell. So many quality games in the series/branches we'll never get. I wish atlus would do a collection or something with translations. bah.

I like Nocturne just fine. It's the DDS games I have trouble getting into and understanding the fan fervor. Just got Persona 3 FES this weekend and I'm looking forward to playing that one as well. I seem to have missed the Devil Summoner one. Bugger slipped under my radar. LOL

i tend to love anything done by atlus, the entire persona series, dds, even devil summoner wasnt that bad, but something about noctourne just puts me off, just seems like the entire game so far is centered around combat

yes i understand there are nuanced mechanics at play here to be appreciated such as series staples of exploiting elemental weaknesses of enemies and talking demons into joining your ranks ala persona 2....but is that all there is to it? grinding it out with the story (admittedly a dark & intriguing one) as an afterthought?

i just wanna know if the game is worth sticking with as far as the story goes, the gameplay isnt nearly as engrossing as i thought it would be

im still very early in the game, im at the club in the broken down mall & spoke briefly with that girl (who oddly enough was unfazed at the site of her friend now being a demon)

You really aren't missing much, I had the choice between that and DDS and I chose Devil Summoner because it was cheaper, it turned out I chose the wrong game. Devil Summoner turned out to be extremely mediocre and while it did have a few good concepts, it didn't make up for the repetitive game play.

I still have to try it out to satiate my curiosity, but I'll keep what you said in mind. I figured it couldn't have been very good for it to have never come up, until recently, in conversation. I can't even recall a thread here talking about it. Must have been mediocre at best considering debating whether the GBA was a success or not has a thread. LOL

Because Megaten games are awesome.

Yes, they are.

SMT is my favorite RPG on the ps2, and one of the best I've played in a long time. Its got a dark, gritty storyline, great replay value, its ACTUALLY DIFFICULT, it doesn't have some stupid-love story like almost every rpg out there, and it has some really-kick ass music. I bought it the day it came out on a hunch, and I was thrilled. Its got some good depth with the Amala Network, and the fiend battles.

I personally love the game. Just something about it...I can't put my finger exactly on what it is...

Btw...another reason to love Atlus...their customer service is amazing. I bought a used DDS box set from a local bookstore, missing the soundtrack. I tried to order one through Atlus's website and ended up e-mailing their customer service department to see if they had any. As it turns out, they sent one to me completely free of charge (I didn't pay one red cent for shipping, even). That's one copy of DDS I won't soon part with (even if someone offered me $150 for it).
