View Full Version : South Jersey Game Night July 12th

A thread to discuss the upcoming event in Kid Ice’s subterranean lair deep in the Pines of South Jersey. I always thought “Deep in the Pines” had a nice ring to it, but since the last game night (July 8th 2006) a Target, Circuit City, Lowes, Pet Smart, WaWa, and 9 or 10 smaller stores have gone up across the street from our development.

If you have not already received an invitation and you would like to come, PM me with your e-mail address and I will send you directions. Unless I think you’re a hideous freak.

If you already sent me your e-mail you will receive directions shortly.

To further expand on the hyperbole from the invitation, I’m currently remodeling the game room and I will be moving the contents of 3 large bookshelves to 2 large bookshelves. This is going to force me to do some rather relentless weeding of my collection, so those of you coming to the event will get first dibs on everything that doesn’t make the cut. This isn’t tradebox stuff, this is good stuff from my collection that I don’t have room for anymore. I’m also getting rid of a lot of promotional stuff, decorative items, and assorted whimsy that has been making my game room appear to be that of a 12 year old. What’s our motto? BRING YOUR TRADES AND LOTS OF CASH.

Gaming wise I will be resurrecting the theater room for some 4 player competition. I’ll have a Gamecube and Dreamcast in there, besides those there will be a couple open ports on the a/v switcher if someone wants to bring a Wii or a 360. That is entirely up to you…there will be so many consoles and cabs going it’s already overkill. I kinda like overkill.

For me, the best part of game night has always been discovering games I have not yet played, either because they’re rare, new, or they just slipped under my radar. So you are highly encouraged to bring along those kinds of games and announce here what you are going to be bringing. For my part I’ll have Propeller Arena, Metal Gear Solid 4, and lots of 3DO garbage to chase away guests at the end of the night.

Oh man, I will definitely be there. I have plenty of trades and plenty of cash. Should be a blast! I might bring some Dreamcast oddities to play to see how how good (or how horrible) they are.

Nonsense, you're a paisan now, of course you're invited. That goes for anyone else bringing money.

Can you shoot me a pm with the information about it? Such as address and time and such.

I really appreciate the invite and would love to come. Unfortunately my friend is visiting from California, and we will be up in Pennsylvania playing paint ball, on the 12th of all days. I really wish I could come, so some one do me the favor of taking pictures of the whole event, so I can at least imagine the laughs and hardcore Gradius 5 karaoke.

I have sent you a PM because I am not sure if I fall in the category of those that would be invited. I am also curious in helping you weed out your collection, but are tradeboxes a common fair at game nights, or are they strictly just for playing games?

Oh yes, definitely. This is how we did it before we had videogame shops like Next Level & the DP store. We kick it Old School with gaming, impromptu tourneys, Lady Killer high score challenges, and of course tradeboxes.

I have some real old-school "game night" photos here. Check out the trade box action, it was literally impossible to get it all into one photo and this was in my home's very tiny laundry room... you don't want to miss out on that kind of thing.

Awesome. I'm a regular at the South Jersey Classic which is always a blast but stuff like this seems alot more intimate and in general fun. You don't have to worry about being in a store and can get away with more things.

Also, I think we should get some LOL action going on and everyone should bring their DSs.

Heh. I guess I didn't check my own post but I didn't mean to say LOL with our DSs, but play the new Agetec game L-O-L on our DSs.

I'm both glad you are starting these up again and sorry that I can't make it until the fall. To me these are what the hobby is all about: hanging out, playing games, and trading. I haven't hit any of the events at Next Level (been too lazy to drive down), but am a semi-regular NAVA attendee, and those events just don't have the same feel as the 'game nights' both Jeff and Joe used to host. Maybe I'm starting to show my age, I don't know.

I'll be there.

I'm very close to where Vin Scelsa refers to as 'deep in the woods of the Watchung Valley', or something like that, or, to use a more normal reference point, West Orange. Anybody want to carpool and split gas/tolls/greenhouse gas emmissions?

Oh, one other note: Regarding offbeat Dreamcast games - I like DC Squares a bunch. I'll try to find it, and bring it along. If I'm extra motivated I'll see if I can burn a disc with some custom background tunes for it as well.

Bringing this back to everyone's attention.

This past week I drove to and from Chicago - about $300 on gas in the wife's minivan, and then had to fill my own tank tonight in prep for the new work week.

Anyone want to carpool this weekend?

Time for an update:

-I will send more explicit directions later in the week…I have not had anyone get lost in years of doing this. If you’re coming from out of town plan to stop by Next Level Videogames, it’s less than 15 minutes from my house. When I send the updated directions I will include directions directly to the store.

-the only “rule” so to speak is bring your own beverages. We will not be serving any drinks, alcohol or otherwise. There will be two coolers with ice in the basement. Snacks and pizza are on the house.

-if you’ve got PS3 games, bring em! That goes double if there’s not a demo on PSN and *triple* if there’s four player multiplayer.

-as mentioned in the invitation, the tournament is MAME Hat Trick. It will begin at nine o’clock and the prize is the 7800 version of Hat Trick. I’ll also throw in a 7800. And some loose games. And a boxed Mean 18 Golf. And yes I have secured a megaphone. ;-)

-don’t forget our motto: bring trades and lots o cash.

-start time is 4:00. Next event July 18th, 2009. Miss at your own peril.

Great picture.

That V-boy in upper right hand corner looks like it is awakening from its slumber...

SLUMBER FROM HELL!!!

I guess it would be appropriate...that a V-boy would get red-eye when you take its picture.

I'll have the prize 7800 on deck. None of the system exclusives are anything to write home about, but it does have some nice arcade conversions with two player.

30 hours and counting, race fans. I'm on vacation this week so I'm ridiculously ready for this (I wish it was tonight!)

My only needs right now are PS3 controllers for 4-player (mark them in some way so you don't lose them) and multiplayer Dreamcast games. See you tomorrow!

Bomberman Online, Mark of the Wolves, MvsC2, Wacky Races…bring Sonic Shuffle too, I heard it sucks but I want to try it. I still have most of the staples like Virtua Tennis and Rush 2049. Thanks.

OK, a couple hours away, and I'm confirmed to show up! I just gotta go do the neighborhood kiddie birthday party thingie first.

There's also a chance that a certain Cutnut might come along for extra laughs... (*That's a Sparky Cutnut, in case you don't know...*)

I don't have much in the trade box area as I've already liquidated everything at INSANE pricing. *Just cause I got tired of carrying around the trade box*

See ya tonight!

For once I'm glad someone's not bringing lots of trades. The basement already looks like the first Phillyclassic...and that's just *my* stuff. I suspect Nick and Chris will be bringing big hauls. Whoa.

See you later.

PS: Lori's making lasagna. DAMN

You have no idea what gems I just found in the Dreamcast library. Expect to be pleasantly surprised. Or horrified.

Thanks, Kid Ice!

I had a great time. Too bad I got schooled in Hat Trick - one of my favorite games.

I got enough board games to last a lifetime. No more board games for me!

Had a great time as usual...thanks again Jeff for hosting.

I just wish I could have gotten there sooner and I wasn't so tired.

It's a shame some of the people who said they were coming didn't show...but I guess we are used to that by now.

I also had a good time and would like to thank Jeff for hosting. Unfortunately I don't think any pictures were taken last night which is a shame. It would have been better if we had video because the Hat Trick tournament was epic and that was all due to Jeff's amazing and thrilling announcing...I think he should look into trying up a new profession.

Thanks for coming everyone. I do think somebody (AJ?) taped the Hat Trick tournament. In the morning Lori expressed her appreciation for my "announcing".

Yum, leftover lasagna! And beer! ;-)

Thanks Jeff, I had a blast too. And thank Lori for the delicious eats. Seeing the lasagna made me completely forget about my turkey sub. So much for my latest attempt at healthy eating. Looks like it went down in flames as fast as my pathetic attempts at logging the high score on Defender. I ate the turkey sub for lunch today, by the way, and it was absolutely no competition for the food last night; not even in the same league.

I ended up stopping off at some Turnpike Svc Center on the way home to pass out for an hour before continuing on, but it was all worthwhile.

For some reason, though, the whole way home I kept thinking about Loving, Touching, and Squeezing... Must have been the chatter on Sirius 198.....

Thanks for hosting Jeff. I had a blast. The Hat Trick Tourney was fun and I am i not just saying that since I whooped ass and won the 7800 which is a lovely little addition to my gaming collection. The tourney has my wanting to bust out NHL 94 again and just abuse the computer mercilously LOL.

Please make sure you thank Lori for the wonderful food. It was a pleasent surprise to offset the alcohol i consumed :^P
