NES: Region locked controllers, change region?

Hi
I got a european nes and got some american controllers.
NES-004 and NES-004E is the model numbers.

American controllers doesn't work with European consoles and vice versa. Anybody know how to either change region or just make the console or controllers region free from this lock?

I'm not sure what causes the incompatibility. My first guess would be something different about the IC on the controller itself, the way it interprets inputs controller logic IC in the NES.

I don't know of a straight forward mod, but there may be one.

What I do know is that a snes controller is pin compatible with a nes controller and that there are hacks for them converting them between EU/US
