UGHHH! I seriously can't take it! I got to Wily's last form! This is NOT fair! I had to use all NINE energy tanks AND my M tank just to get there, leaving me with nothing left.... GAAAAAAHHHH....

I hear you man, that damned castle kicked my ass. I now have to go back and gather more bolts to stock up on energy tanks again. I had no idea Wily had 4 forms, so I used my tanks prior to the final form, when THATS the time you want to use them! Oh well, guess I'll have to go through this bloody castle again.

Splash Woman drops rather quick (not with the Black Hole, though). Just keep to your timing and she'll be a cakewalk. Then show off her trident to ol' Concrete.

I Just beat the game. Now that's what I call a challenging boss fight. Make sure you have a decent supply of energy tanks before fighting Wily.

It's been a long time since I've felt this accomplished winning a game. Thank you Capcom for bringing back those old feelings. Here's hoping this one sells well enough to warrant a Mega Man 10.

Now I'm looking forward to the 360 version so I can apply my skills towards some rankings and achievements!

So what's the secret about the bubble jumping pattern on Splash's stage? I'd totally own this place if it wasn't for this frikkin thing.

This game is a bastard, but it's such a blast! Galaxy Man stage and boss are so easy compared to EVERYTHING else! It's fun though. I believe it is fun through its simplicity..

Now, can we get a Megaman X sequel in the SNES style?

Jewel Man. He loses his protection and takes some decent damage from the black hole gun...

Does anyone know what the "Costume" you buy in the shop for 200 bolts does? (it's the item that looks like Roll's head). I bought one, and I can't figure out its purpose.

NayusDante

It changes Roll's outfit to her MM8 one. For another 200, you can change it back. No, she doesn't change into "hot, older Roll."

Got this game almost right after the store updated, which was earlier than usual. Well so far I'm satisfied with the game, but also a little disappointed with a few things, it's nothing I can't look past tho.

I understand they wanted to model the game after Mega Man 2, but it felt odd hearing the Game Over tune playing in the main menu, it just doesn't fit at all. They also ripped the stage intro music from MM2 as well, which again kind of annoyed me, it would've been great to hear a more updated 8bit version of it. Also, why the hell did they take out sliding? There are some parts that warrant sliding (I noticed one immediately just seconds in Plug Man's stage) and it can really mess you up when you do it as a reflex.

Again these are things that I'll get over probably by the end of the day, so it's really not anything that matters in the end. Other than that it's a great deal for $10 and I'm looking forward to what Capcom will come up with next.

Frankie_Says_Relax
09-25-2008, 05:31 PM
I was never a huge fan of the sliding mechanic in the NES Mega Man games ... since it essentially made you move a tiny bit faster, most people I knew would just use it repeatedly/non-stop instead of walking ... which kind of undermined the whole point of walking.

I guess that's kind of a strange gripe ... but I don't mind it not being there.

TonyTheTiger

There are some parts that warrant sliding (I noticed one immediately just seconds in Plug Man's stage)

It's actually Hornet Man's weapon that gets you that bolt. Though it does seem like they built a few areas with sliding in mind as an alternative due to Protoman having that ability.

I'd also like to point out that this game no longer feels so difficult. The first time through I was still feeling things out and getting beaten by all the little surprises. Now everything seems in order and I can beat most of the robot masters rather handily with the mega buster, though Hornet Man and Plug Man are still big pains.

One thing I'd like to ask is how some people are getting these absurdly short times in the time attack mode. I hauled ass through Wily Stage 3 in 4 minutes. I thought that was pretty quick until I saw that all the high scores are about 2 minutes quicker than that.

This is just an amazing DLC title ...

... I'm not sure about everybody else, but for me - between Bionic Commando Re-Armed, Mega Man 9, Braid, Castle Crashers, 1942 Joint Strike, Strong Bad's CGFAP, Dr. Mario Online RX and many others, I think that this is the first year that I've potentially enjoyed and/or appreciated more DLC exclusives than brick/mortar games!

Seriously, I'm having a blast with Wiley's Castle, this is the farthest I've gotten in one without having to use Game Genie. I've been glued to WipEout HD.... So I just got around to downloading the PS3 demo, even though I'm buying it on the 360, so I can use my Hori stick. Not to mention I still have about 1200 MS points just sitting there, leftover from last month.

It's nice to see it's still harder than holy hell, all these years later. But I was disappointed on there being no widescreen support, but I'll live.

I loved the opening cinema, and the satire on the media.. Can't wait to buy this Wednesday.

I think it's how everyone just believes what the media says, as in, Dr. Light is responsible. Of course, when someone launches a terrorist attack on the world with evil robots, everyone calls his house to complain.

Okay, so I already have 64% of the accomplishments achieved, and if I weren't back at college, I'd probably be attempting to beat the game again and earn a few more. Also, I'm on a massive Mega Man kick at the moment, so... yeah, I think this game might be like a pork pie: Unhealthy, but just SO GOOD. I'm just basing this on what I've heard, never tasted a pork pie myself. Would like to, though.

But yeah, I digress. The more you play this game, the easier it gets for sure. There are a few parts that continue to frustrate me (such as a particularly vexing low overhead jump in Wily's second stage), but it's certainly manageable, and I don't believe any challenge is far out of the realm for most players... except for Mr. Perfect. Whoever gets that is a virtual wizard... nay, a deity. o_O

Insure yourself on those low jumps by putting Rush on the spikes. If you fall, you bounce back up. Easy.

I'm able to do that for most jumps EXCEPT this one, found at 2:40 in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAO3u1uJmNU

I wish I could use Rush to ensure safety, but he'd just bounce me up to the ceiling spikes, and the jump itself to make without hitting your head and botching your jump is... well, it sucks. I can only pull it off half of the time, and I had to use a Spike Guard when I went for the Invincible challenge. I needed it too. :[

Finally got on this last night. Absolutely loved every second of what I've played. Have to go with Galaxy Man and Tornado Man as the best stages thus far, but I've not made it far in some of the others. I must say that Penny Arcade's stip about it yesterday is spot-on.

Are you insane? Tornado Man's stage was the bane of my existence! Those rotating platforms drove me bonkers!

The comic is absolutely spot on. I'm sure there was a part of us all that hadn't seen the light of day in nearly fifteen years that came out when we sat behind that game.

I kind of find Tornado Man's stage fun, but the last segment can be really annoying, especially with the damn umbrellas floating out of the clouds. However, my personal most-hated stage is Plug Man on three premises:

1: THE VANISHING BLOCKS. Oh my god, I hate them forever. 15 years and they're still among the most obnoxious obstacles ever.

2: Those damn shadow Mega Men annoy the hell out of me. They're really hard to shake if you don't kill them, but luckily, I've found the Laser Trident takes care of them quickly.

3: Plug Man himself is one of the hardest Robot Masters in the game, IMO. He's real hard to avoid when his Plug Balls are raining down on you.

For the record, my personal favorite levels are Galaxy Man and Concrete Man. That's subject to change, but that's how I see it now.

So I woke up this morning to find that my Wii A/C adaptor had fried. To make sure the Wii itself was fine, I hooked it up to my spare and played some MM9. Before I knew it, I was at Wily and still had 6 E-Tanks and my M-Tank, with 8 lives remaining. That was a good morning.

Use Jewel Satellite on the umbrellas.

1. Rush Jet over them, or destroy the hologram generators with something. Tornado them away if you must.
2. Jewel Satellite.
3. Keep Jewel Satellite on, and keep away from him. Fire the Jewel Satellite from a distance, and instantly re-arm it. He'll never touch you. You'll run out before he dies, so just use the buster on him three or four times.

I think you can guess what weapon I use the most often. MOST sections of the game work really nicely with Jewel Satellite left on.

Something else that I've found...
GO CRAZY with special weapons on the first Wily stage boss. The spike balls move faster with most of them. Magma moves three at a time, but it's slower. Plug Ball is great, since you can hit the bottom one from the top! You'll have enough placed weapon energy in stage 2 to restore most of your Tornado and Trident for the next boss. In Wily 3, use your M-Tank before you get the placed one.

And I strongly recommend using the damage reducer at the very beginning of Wily 4. LOT easier that way.

Sotenga
10-02-2008, 05:10 PM
Nayus: I agree the Jewel Satellite is awesome. Finally, a shield weapon in the series that doesn't totally blow! :D

Well... to be fair, the Junk Shield from Mega Man 7 was okay. I digress. Question time: Does anyone think that with MM9's resounding success, a Mega Man 10 in the old style is going to be in the works? Way too soon to ask that, I know.

So after ignoring the fact that this game came out on Live earlier in the week, I started playing that Megaman 7 NES version Sotenga posted. I haven't played Megaman 7 in years and playing it this way was a really nice treat. I can't wait for #8 to be done in the same fashion, and I think #7 sparked my interest enough to fnally go try #9, and maybe even replay the first 6. :)

For anyone who is struggling with the keyboard controls on Megaman 7, Might I suggest Xpadder. It allows you to map keyboard presses to your gamepad, making the game infinitely more playable (for me anyways :)).

I finished it, great game (!) although it was the most difficult of all the Mega Man games.

I had the most problems with the stage 3 boss in Wiley's castle. (the big bubbles) because I didn't realize that the black Hole Bomb not only has to be deployed but also activated! (like the Drill Bomb weapon from Mega Man 4)

HINT: for the stage 3 boss in Wiley's castle use the Black Hole Bomb. Before the robotic eye switches from one blob to another, lay the bomb in its path this way: Jump and deploy the bomb with the shoot button, then activate it by pressing the shoot button again! The eye will go through and takes a lot of damage. Five hits will do. If not activated, the weapon is ineffective.

FInally got a chance to sit down and play the over the weekend. Pure awesomeness!

As for it being the hardest MM, I must disagree completely. I had far more trouble with MM1 when I was younger, but then again, I was younger, but I was still pretty damn good at games then. Eventually, I was able to beat MM1 on one life and I think with enough practice, MM9 couldn't be that much harder if I played it as religiously as I did MM1 back in the day.

My final time was 6:41:02, 42%. It took me less than 24 hours, but that was my final play time. I wish it wasn't over! I don't think I have the patience to get the rest of the accomplishments. Does anything happen when you do?

SPOILER:

I didn't feel like playing all the way through to get Protoman's ending, so I Youtubed it. I'm pissed there's no cutscene or anything, but I'd be more pissed if I played through it and found this out.

I don't want a walk in the park with this title, of course I want a challenge (i made the mistake of watching youtube for part of braid and feel very let down in myself).

Forget X4, it was X6 that I could never beat. Holy crap that game was HARD!

MM9 was plenty frustrating though I did beat it in the end. I guess what annoyed me was that there were so many instant death areas (especially in the Wily stages) that were there just to make it difficult and didn't add anything to the level (spikes in nasty spots, long series of disappearing plantforms, etc.). There also didn't seem to be enough checkpoints in the levels or they weren't in good spots compared to where the difficult areas were.

MM1 was tough but fair, MM9 was just annoyingly tough.

For Mega Man goodness, I highly recommend the first three games of the original series. The first Mega Man is greatly outclassed by its predecessors, but I still enjoy the feel of it and think it's definitely one of the most challenging titles in the series (mostly due to no passwords, no energy tanks, and some vicious segments). MM2 and MM3 are unquestionably great, and if you like those, I'd consider getting MM4 as well. If you're not turned off to the series yet after 4 (which was a fine game in my opinion, but definitely the point where the series as a whole began to turn a bit stale), then look into all of the others. It's mostly more of the same, but each game has several unique things aside from the different level designs and bosses. Personally, I think 5 is my least favorite in the series; I only rate 6 slightly higher for being less frustrating and having those fun Rush Adaptor suits. I like MM7 a fair deal, but I like MM8 slightly more for some really innovative stages that take advantage of its CD-based memory capacity. If you can, look into Mega Man and Bass/Rockman and Forte, as it's fun, but REALLY hard and feels a bit unfair at times.

And for MMX, I'd definitely recommend playing the first one for sure. It's one of the greatest games on the SNES. If you like that, then you'll definitely like X2; not much is different from the first, but it feels a bit more refined and challenging overall. If you liked X2, go for X3 (once again, not much different but still fun) and X4 for sure (different mostly for Zero being his own character). Hell, I'd say X4 is even better than X3, if not just because playing as Zero in X4 is just way too awesome. All X games after X4 are... well, I have X5 and X6, and they're frustrating for all of the wrong reasons. They don't feel as great as X4, and while I haven't played much of X5 in a while, I recall that my interest in the X games waned after playing it a few times and I decided that I wouldn't get X6 then. However, I have acquired X6 recently due to it being very cheap and easily accessible, and I can affirm that X6 has some incredibly painful designs, such as Blaze Heatnix's stage. Can we all agree that having to fight that f@#$ing red circle thingy was just a total load?

I've yet to play X7, but I hear it's beyond abysmal and one of the worst things to occur in the entirety of the Mega Man universe. I'd still like to get it to see just HOW bad, but I'm hoping to pay less than $10. I hear X8 is actually pretty good and a step up in the series since X5, but it seems to have something of a bloated Parts system (and the Maverick names are the most retarded ever, but they were admittedly getting bad around X6... and I refuse to count the damn Guns N' Roses names in X5).

So... yeah. Probably more than you wanted to hear, but that's my view on MM and MMX. Also, it's hardly anything like the Mega Man we know, but Mega Man Legends totally rules and I heartily recommend it.

And let's not forget all the Game Boy Mega Man games, and the Mega Man Zero series for the GBA.

Actually, Metal Man gives you the Metal Blade. Wood Man gives the Leaf Shield. :)
Bah! I was typing too fast for my brain to keep up. I was thinking that Metal Man gives you metal blade to USE against Woodman. :)

when you purchase the protoman download it specificly says theres no story at all.

It does? Hmmm, I didn't see that in the one or two sentences they wrote on the Wii download screen. Either I'm really inattentive, or you were playing the 360 version? I don't think I can go back and check now that I've bought it...I could try clicking on it again.

Besides, even if it had no story elements, some may guess it still has an ending with a story element, but whatever.

And let's not forget all the Game Boy Mega Man games, and the Mega Man Zero series for the GBA.

D'oh, but I did! Sadly, I can't comment on any of the Zero games, as I have yet to play them... I intend to amend that soon, though.

However, I have all of the MM original GB titles. They're worthy contenders for the main console games, even if the first three don't really offer much different compared to the console titles. The first one is short but very tough, Wily's levels will likely cause some ripping out of your hair. The second title is the weakest for sure (due to bad sound design and being WAY too easy to beat, plus one of the lamest finales against Wily ever), but it's still playable and not a bad action title. The third one is better than the first two, but its ass is kicked by Mega Man IV. IV's polish gleams like Patrick Stewart's head, as it has some neat cutscenes, some of the best level design of the series, and it was, IIRC, THE first game to implement the Parts Shop!

However, Mega Man V is the greatest of the GB games, simply on the premise that instead of the bosses being borrowed from the main series, it has entirely new bosses and weapons! The Stardroids are all quite cool too, and you get to fight them with the versatile Mega Arm, replacing the Mega Buster when you charge. I actually like MMIV and MMV better than MM5 and MM6 for the NES for sure, and if you can track them down (somewhat rare, I'm afraid), do get them by all means! Pick up the first three if you can for cheap, but MMIV and MMV are likely worth their price.

Well, there's one more place to go, but... I have not touched any of the Battle Network or Star Force games, nor do I intend to. Let's just leave it at that, eh?

But back to the topic's focus, I think I would place my favoribility of MM9 on the same level as MM4, perhaps above that. Nothing's touching the first three games in my mind, but MM9 could have easily been one of the best games if released back in the days of the NES.
