View Full Version : Getting rid of CRT TV Whine
Hey guys ><
Not exactly sure which forum this should go in, but since I got the TV too play my oldschool games I'll try this one ;p I bought a CRT TV cause I heard that older systems look best on them (and it was dirt cheap). But I ran into a slight problem, it has a whine that drives me absolutely crazy. Now I looked it up on google and a few places say that this is normal, not the sign of a broken TV and that some people can hear it and some can't.
I guess I can :|
And I hate it.... Does anyone know how I can get rid of the sound, it's driving me crazy!
From what I've noticed over the years (since I was 5 or 6 actually), most older model monitors and TVs have a ringing noise and some are louder (and more noticeable) than others. Your best bet is either get used to it (you will eventually), or try to find one that doesn't have a noticeable ring to it.

All NTSC CRT-based SDTVs (not sure about HDTVs) emit a 15.625kHz tone when operating, as part of normal operation. The ability to hear said tone often goes away as a person gets older (similar to how "mosquito ringtones" work). I can usually hear it when a TV is on in the room, but it doesn't really bother me, personally. You might be able to find a TV where the effect is less pronounced, but if your hearing is hypersensitive to that sort of frequency, I can't be entirely sure of that.

I can sense CRTs when they are on and within a few rooms. It's a high frequency buzz comming from the tube, which would be normal. It's just how they work; have you only used/owned LCDs or plasmas? Because if you've not had a similar issue with a humming sound before then it could be a dying TV.

Surely this can't be the first CRT TV you've ever been in proximity to?
Have you heard CRTs whining before? If you can always hear the whine, then I guess you shouldn't get a CRT. If you haven't heard it before--or only occassionally--this one you just bought is the problem and you should try again.

I've always sensed the sound, but was never sure if it was really a sound I was hearing, nor how to describe it. It's never bothered me, and in fact I kind of appreciate it, because when somebody in my family leaves the TV on, but turns off whatever source is selected (VCR, DVD, game, whatever), than although the TV appears to be off, the moment I walk in the room I know it's on, and can turn it off. (Also, I can then be the stereotypical grumbling patriarch, bitching about people wasting electricity.)
I've never found it bothersome though.

I'm only 20 and we haven't had one in a very very long time so I can't really remeber :|

I can tell anywhere within 2 floors of the TV :( it's real bad >< Mostly goes away when a game is on but it's still there and I have to be there playing the game so it's just like being far away and hearing it... My earphones also do something like that ;p not a whine but I can hear it :| Gone through headphones like no tommorow and they all do it ;p
Just need too lose my hearing a little ;p I'll listen too some real loud music :|
edit: just tested, my dad can't hear it.
2nd edit: so there's no fix for this :/ a dampener no nothing?

There's usually a pitch when you start them up but typically goes away after a bit, at least with the sets I've had.
I did have a set that had a sound that reminded me of one's ear ringing. Tapping on the side or back would make it go away for a while. However that set was about fourteen years old when I got rid of it.

What brand is it? This hunk of junk Magnavox I have does the same thing for a few minutes after you turn it on. The other RCA's we have make no sounds at all.
