Opinions change over time. Some games remain in the top 20, regardless the year you take a poll. Other games just don't age well enough to make the cut anymore. I located DP's Official Top 20 Saturn Games. (2002) thread and I think it is time we see if opinions have changed. Throw your suggestions in this thread, and on July 18th, I will create a new poll so we can, together, determine the best of the best! DP's polling options won't facilitate such a large poll so I will host the final poll elsewhere. That gives us a month, so do your research and play your games! There is no rush.
RULES:
1: All games from the 2002 list will be on the 2008 poll.
2: Three votes adds a game to the poll. If a game isn't good enough to get three votes...then it probably doesn't belong on the list.
3: Only U.S. released games qualify. No prototypes or imports.
4: Any number of games may be on our poll.
1. Astal
2. Dragon Force
3. Fighters Megamix
4. Guardian Heroes
5. House of the Dead, The
6. Magic Knight Rayearth
7. Nights
8. NightWarriors
9. Panzer Dragoon Saga
10. Panzer Dragoon Zwei
11. Saturn Bomberman
12. Sega Rally Championship
13. Shining Force III
14. Shining the Holy Ark
15. Sonic 3D Blast
16. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
17. Virtua Cop 2
18. Virtua Fighter 2
19. Virtual On
20. Winter Heat

I'd nominate "3 Dirty Dwarfs" off the top of my head.
I will second "Three Dirty Dwarfs". Fantastic game that I'm surprised to not see on this list.
I would like to nominate "Clockwork Night" and "Burning Rangers" also. How these two Saturn classics could escape a top twenty list is beyond me!

Darius Gaiden has to be up there. Ill nominate that!

I'll second Clockwork Knight and Burning Rangers!
Have to add Panzer Dragoon. How the hell it wasn't on the original list is beyond my understanding. Winter Heat huh? Srsly? :shameful:
Winter Heat is a classic in the same league as Konami's Track & Field series, and one of the best multi-player games for the system. If anything, Sonic 3D Blast needs to make its way off that list. I will second Panzer Dragoon though, and also Burning Rangers.
The GREATEST travesty though is... how the hell did Mr Bones not make the original list???? Let's get that one up on there.
Street Fighter Collection and Sonic Jam were also good, but might miss the list because they were compilations of older games. Mass Destruction is a personal favorite of mine as well, but probably not worthy of cracking the Top 20.
For those curious, EGM did it's own Top 10 Saturn games in its 1999 Video Game Buyer's Guide. The countdown was as follows:
10. Guardian Heroes
9. Virtua Fighter 2
8. Sega Rally
7. NiGHTS
6. Winter Heat
5. Dragon Force
4. Saturn Bomberman
3. Street Fighter Collection
2. Shining Force III
1. Panzer Dragoon Saga
Steven

No top 20 Saturn US list is complete without Street Fighter Collection. (SFA 2, SSF2 and SSF2 Turbo).
I also nominate Galactic Attack.
And I can't believe House of the Dead is on there. A game like Baku Baku Animal, Bust-A-Move 2 or even Pandemonium! is far more deserving than HotD IMHO. Don't get me wrong, Saturn port while UGLY it played OK, but TOP 20? Farce. PowerSlave (or any of the Lobotomy trilogy) deserves more recognition.
Hell, Sonic 3D Blast should be automatically replaced with Sonic Jam, compilation or not.

Do the games have to be Saturn exclusive? I'm guessing no since Sonic 3D Blast is up there.
I vote Mega Man X4. A great game.
Three Dirty Dwarves
Clockwork Knight
Blazing Dragons
Gapporin
06-18-2008, 03:22 PM
I'll throw in votes for Darius Gaiden and Tempest 2000.
I'll also say that NiGHTS should be taken off the list, but I suppose I'll probably be the only one supporting that endeavor. :p

Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend - This game may have the worst but funniest in game movies in video game history, but it is a very fun and hard billiard game.

Heh, I enjoyed MFPL too, but we're talking a top 20 best, not top 20 favorite. I think it's a good game in its own right, but to call it one of the 20 best Saturn US games would be doing a disservice to more deserving games.

I've been playing the Japanese Strikers 1945 and I think it is awesome. I've been wondering why nobody here has mentioned it. I would have said it myself...but after having a Saturn for less than a week, I don't think I'm qualified to say what the best games are. It's a shame we didn't get it here. I think people would have liked it. I see we got it on the Playstation but they were a different crowd.

Albert Odyssey, yes, it was a SFC port but, it was really good and the only way we got the game here. :)
Is Christmas NiGHTs DQ'ed for not being a retail box release? If not perhaps it may be considered for inclusion.

Was it? I was under the impression that Legend of Eldean was actually a "gaiden." Meaning not a port of either SFC game but a different one entirely. Overall, I found it entertaining solely thanks to the personality Working Designs gave it. Without that aspect it's pretty unremarkable.
Also, beyond Mega Man X4, I also give a vote for Street Fighter Alpha 2.

You are correct. Albert Odyssey 1 and 2 on the SNES were strategy games. The Albert Odyssey on the Saturn was a traditional RPG. It was not a port.
Overall, I found it entertaining solely thanks to the personality Working Designs gave it. Without that aspect it's pretty unremarkable.
Agreed! IMO it was Working Designs greatest translation. But even without the WD translation there is no denying the landmard music score by Naoki Kodaka. Easily one of the greatest video game sound tracks ever produced IMO!

I had many nominations, but believe it or not I limited my choices. Here they are and a little bit of info on why I nominated them.
Gun Griffon (How the HELL is this not on there?)
Sonic R (How the HELL is this not on there either?)
Albert Odyssey (Working Designs most charming and enjoyable translation)
Daytona USA (Original! Not CCE, it had crappy remixed music and played differently.)
Scorcher (Equal amounts of tech demo, fun and frustration!)
Burning Rangers (Very original concept. Great follow up after Nights.)
Enemy Zero (FPS\Myst\D hybrid. One of a kind, like the WARP company it's self.)
Sonic Jam (We have 3D Blast and not Jam? What gives?)
Baku Baku (Original fun puzzle game)
Diehard Arcade (One of the last great beatem ups!)
Quake (The best Quake port and who can forget Dank and Skuz!?)
Duke Nukem' 3D (The best DN3D port and has Death Tank Zwei!!!)
Darius Gaiden (One of the best Darius games IMO)
Clockwork Knight 2 (One-upped the original in EVERY aspect!)
Mystaria\Blazing Heroes (Played as good if not better than the Shining Force series.)
Mr Mort

I baught my first Saturn a month after the surprise launch, I paid out the nose for it at the time, but it was worth every penny. The Saturn is still my favourite console of all-time.
Guardian Heroes
Night Warriors
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Sega Rally
Street Fighter Collection
Those 6 easily are among the best domestic releases IMHO.

Opps. Thanks for the correction there. Never played the SFC games though I do know of them. Another assumption backfires. Let this be a lesson to not only me but, y'all as well. LOL
Which Darkstalkers games were released in the US on the Saturn? Was it just Night Warriors? I know we didn't get Vampire Savior or 2... or did we? Ack. Brain-ache! :o

Where's the love for Mr Bones?? Is it that most people just haven't played the game, or is it just not that well liked? I think it just oozes with more personality and originality than 95% of the games that were coming out in the 32-bit era.

Hilariously skimpy on shooter games here.
Darius Gaiden definitely needs to be in...other than that, I'm really not so Saturn-saavy (at least outside of the mostly JP-exclusive games I care about) that I'd give it a vote, but jus' sayin'.

Battle Bakkraid, (Do) Don Pachi, Soukyugarentai (I lubs) and the venerable Radiant Silvergun, of course. :) All JP or EU though. No US releases there.
How about Galactic Attack (aka Layer Section)? It's a US release. Series origin for Ray Storm/Crisis to boot. ;)

Street Fighter: The Movie was a good game. Or at least the Saturn version was. It's not spectacular, but it's easy to track down and great for satisfying a Street Fighter urge.

That original poll was interesting. I had no idea that ASTAL got all the love. It's a great game, but better than NiGHTS, PDS, FIGHTERS MEGAMIX?
Here are ones I definitely think should be on the poll:
Mr. Bones [the most diverse gameplay I've seen in a platformer, great character too]
The Legend of Oasis [awesome action RPG, where's the love!?]
Bug! [still not another game like it!]
Clockwork Knight 2 [another inventive early Sega platformer]
Powerslave [the best FPS of the 32-bit era]
Winning Post [awesome rare sim]
Fighting Vipers [great control and a solid spin on the fighting genre]
Virtua Fighter [I still prefer the speed and control to VF2]
Virtua Cop [better levels than VC2]
Rayman [beautifully drawn and creative in the Astal vein]
Duke Nukem 3D [best version of the game, great NetLink play]
Die Hard Arcade [a fresh take on the beat'em up with good graphics]
Burning Rangers [another totally unique game with some groundbreaking graphics]
Baku Baku [fun puzzle game with a nice twist on your standard Tetris]
Sonic R [very deep racer, the best graphics on the system and music that owns you]
PentiumMMX

Has anyone mentioned DARK LEGEND by Data East yet? That game is my FAVORITE Saturn game ever!
I also like X-MEN: CHILDREN OF THE ATOM and LUNACY! These two titles get my vote as well!
SEGA AGES is also a worthy mention. Not sure if that title counts because it's a compilation. Best ports of OUTRUN, AFTERBURNER 2, and SPACE HARRIER on any console!

Virtua Cop (SEGA; 81026 w/Stunner)
--- I, too, think this game has better levels than VC2.
Sega Ages [3in1 - Space Harrier, OutRun, After Burner II]
(SPAZ/WORKING DESIGNS; T-12707H)
--- Very very near arcade perfect OutRun is here!
Tempest 2000 (INTERPLAY; T-12516H)
--- Jag T2K wins, but still has great BGMs and game play
Of course I cannot drop must-have titles
Sega Rally Championship (SEGA; 81207)
Virtua Fighter 2 (SEGA; 81014)
Another I'd like to vote for (but sorry I don't have US version)
Galactic Attack
--- One of the best shoot'em up for Saturn
Last Gladiators
--- IMO, best pinball sim for US Saturn.
Japan only Necronomicon is better, though.
Area 51
--- Another very good lightgun shooter
Fighters Megamix
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
