I noticed something recently that I thought was interesting. Apparently there are some similarities between early Sega Master System and Sega Saturn game boxes. Take a look and see if you can spot them.

What I'd like to point out is the character image on white background. Both platforms used this approach. The SMS used checkerboard white, the Saturn used stripe white.

Strange how I never noticed it before. I find it extremely cool though that Sega never really forgot it's roots 100%. A nice homage to the system that started it all for them.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my discovery. Anyone else notice a similar continuity?

I think the stripes are just a carryover from the Sega CD.

hey, maybe that's why the saturn failed? ROFL

seriously though, the master system boxart is so bad it can make even a good game seem boring.

nothing says fun like euclidean grids and times new roman.

I think the stripes are just a carryover from the Sega CD.

Which are a carry over for Genesis. Still I think the character art on a white background is still a bit of a nod to the SMS.

The grid on the SMS boxes carried over to the early Genesis boxes too. By the time the Saturn was released, they were carrying over design from the Sega CD; most evidently in their choice to use those awful large cases that are even more prone to breakage than regular CD cases.
