That's fucking awesome ... I'm very tempted, even though I have a copy on Blu-Ray (actually I have a REPLACEMENT non-retail pressing of the "fixed" version sent to me by the president of Digital Leisure - due to the fact that I was the FIRST consumer to bring the fact that the original pressing had a major bug when played on PS3 that wouldn't allow users to "run out" of lives to the attention of Digital Leisure)

I wonder if they'd autograph a copy of Space Ace Blu-Ray instead.

I'm tempted too, even though I got my copy "in the wild" at a used cd/dvd store.. Personally autographed by all the creators?? Sweet..

I'm kind of surprised that Digital Leisure's pockets are deep enough that they've managed to stay in business all these years and keep releasing new versions of Dragon's Lair. Either that or the games are still in pretty heavy demand after all these years.

That is a pretty sweet deal, I might pick a DVD up out of respect :)

I feel like I've been slumming it, the last few times I've gotten into Dragon's Lair I played it on the Jaguar CD.

Damn. I'm a huge Don Bluth fan and would love to have something signed by him. I don't even have a PS3 or Blu-Ray player but I'm considering buying the Blu-ray release. With the 25% off it'll be like $37.

I still await the release of a Digital Pictures DVD boxset. I want DVD quality game footage damnit! They don't have to be playable.

Dragon's Lair doesn't always give you a hint as to what to do so sometimes you have to just experiment based on what it looks like you should be doing. Like pushing up on the screen where the wall is closing. But the game isn't all that fast paced so it balances out. Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II are leagues harder. The games are consistent with letting you know what to do but they're both so frantic that you don't have any time to think.

I never got their signatures back in 2002 when they were at CGE. Maybe time to rectify that little oversight...

I just got the dragon lair blue ray and I must say out of all the versions I own this picture translation is about as close to the real thing I have seen to date. The colors are so vibrant and the randon sequences are like the arcade. Totally worth it a great buy great addition to the collection. Man them games were ahead of its time.. I will never forget walking into an arcade and hearing the game then seeing the awesome graphics. I also won't forget passing out at the 75cent charge for admission.

I would get killed quick and I knew I would be broke soon so it was off to space invaders to stretch a quarter.

Now to get the rest of the set.. I hope cliff hanger comes out. Anyone know anybody with a cliff hanger cabinet?

Cliff Hanger has never come out anywhere except arcade, has it? I imagine the licensing issues would be messy. Just buy Castle of Cagliostro and leave it at that. ;)

Actually, due to the intense re-mastering process, the blu-ray actually has a much higher fidelity than the arcade ever was.

That is of course not to say that it's a more "authentic" Dragon's Lair experience ... as any hard-core fan of the series will tell you that the "floaty" overhead animation camera/filming quality is part of the game's inherent charm/nostalgia factor.

Digital Leisure actually went in with high def computer processing and "froze" the backgrounds to complete stasis. No movement. It's subtle, and very strange at first viewing, but a real Dragon's Lair fan will notice it after a few mintues.

Dragon's Lair Blu-Ray is by far the most visually stunning, well developed "console" version of the arcade classic, but I still prefer the current freeware DAPHNE emulator in terms of being a 99.99% perfect, authentic arcade experience.

If you love laser-disc arcade games and have never tried Daphne, you should seriously check it out.

I also doubt Cliff Hanger will ever see release on DVD, as Miyazaki now commands much more respect in regards to his catalog of work being "used" for things like laser-disc games.

Well, considering Manga still has the North American DVD rights, maybe Stern still has some sort of rights to Cagliostro as well. I imagine the paperwork is probably lost in 25 years' worth of archives and that no one thinks it would be worthwhile to dig it out.

Thanks for the info. I haven't seen an actual dragons lair game in years. Not sure if I would recognize the floaty" overhead animation camera/filming Does the daphne emulator let you play all laserdisc classics?

Yes sir!

It's freeware, and just about every US laserdisc release is present.

Astron Belt
Badlands
Bega's Battle
Cliff Hanger
Cobra Command
Dragon's Lair
Dragon's Lair II : Timewarp
Esh's Aurunmilla
Galaxy Ranger
GP World
Interstellar
M.A.C.H. 3
Road Blaster
Space Ace
Star Blazer
Super Don Quix-ote
Thayer's Quest
Us vs Them

You'll need to track down a copy of the 20th anniversary DVD set to unlock the "commercial rights" to play Dragon's Lair/Space Ace/Dragon's Lair II/Thayer's Quest ... but once you do you'll see arcade perfect laserdisc action on your screen.

http://www.digitalleisure.com/images/products/dragonsLair.gif
(That's the set you'll need, and it only needs to be used ONCE for a one-time check when booting up the games for the first time.)

The emulator doesn't use any of the data on the DVD sets to display action on-screen, it actually uses uncompressed "disc images" of the actual laser-discs, so the video is downright stunning (and, again, highly authentic looking).

I've got Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Dragon's Lair II, Cliff Hanger, Road Avenger, and Cobra Command loaded into mine and running in my MAME cab, and it's like having the real deal in the case of every game right down to the start-up tests.

By the way, whatever happened to Readysoft? If Dragon's Lair is still selling so well, surely a rerelease of Guy Spy would be welcomed?

It's quite trivial to get a Sega CD game running in an emulator, y'know.

Joe need to put Daphne on the DP store's MAME cabinet.

I've had the discussion with him before ...

... I'd love to rock a bunch of arcade-perfect laserdisc games at a NAVA.
