View Full Version : "Musically" challenged? RPG Puzzles
I don't know if this is just me, and I don't think this counts as tone deafness since I love listening to music and such and have no problem (rock music ;p).
But when it comes to musical puzzles in RPGs I'm just a complete failure ><
I don't really have problems with most puzzles (every once in a while I get into a tough one) but I pull through and I never look them up, except for musical puzzles :| The ones where you here a song and you have to reproduce it with stepping on a set of things or touching a set of things. I just can't ever do it... I tried giving my all and doing one myself without help from any of my friends in Sudeki and after like 2 hours I quit and never played the game (the puzzles pretty far in too ><).
Anyone else have trouble with them like me? See a game like rhapsody and cringe?
Anyone :(?

I think you should play Eternal Sonata. At least there's visual help there ;)

Tone deaf has more to do with not being able to match pitches with your own voice, nothing to do with listening to music. Also, the kind of puzzles that you're having trouble deal with whats known as melodic interpretation. Don't feel bad about it though if you get stuck, it's not easy. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when your stuck with one of these puzzles.
1. Use a trial and error to find the first note.
2. Don't try to randomly guess notes, listen more for the intervals between notes. For example, was it a subtle change in pitch, or could it have gone up an entire octave?
3. ???
4. Profit!
Don't put to much into these puzzles, for the most part it really is just trial and error.

Did you ever play simon as a kid? If so, most sound puzzles are kinda like that. Match the order with the sound. True, you also had color, but it's alot like that. If not, I dont know what to say. I've yet to meet anyone who couldnt match basic sounds.

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. There's probally plenty of musically inclined people that are really good at those types of puzzles that are horrible at logic puzzles.

I'm good at simon, but without the colors I would fail miserably ><

yeah ;p didn't think it was tone deafness ;p but I've tried everything, I can usually get the first note right after like 5-10 mins but I really fail beyond that :| I don't randomly guess for at least a solid 30 mins ;p then I just get frustrated >< It's can't really tell the differences between changes, it just sounds different but I don't know in what way ><
I really almost never have trouble with the puzzles, only a few have had me stumped for more then a few minutes (like that guardian chess sort of one in Zelda: TP took me at least like 25, it was hella puzzle ;p) it's these musical ones, and they change from game to game.
Like xenosaga the musical puzzle I got stuck on there was 3 different pillars with rings on em, when you broke the ring it made a sound and you had to play that sound. Couldn't figure it out had to get the order it was done in :(
Most of my friends don't understand it either since I'm pretty good at figuring out what to do in games (RPGS, or otherwise, puzzle or no puzzle) but I just can't do muisical ones ><
So there's no one else like that out there? :| Comon speak up I don't wanna be alone :P

I don't really feel horrible about it, since I'm usually pretty good at figuring everything else out, I never turn to guides for games :| But these I have absolutely no chance in figuring out, even the simple ones get me and I have no idea why :(

This might be a good topic to list music/sound based RPG puzzles in.
