I spent the better part of my college days playing with Commodore 64. Yes, I'm THAT old. Now then, as a sort of side-project I'm copying some of the best SID tunes via Winamp to MP3 files which I shall regale store visitors with from time to time. I've got a pretty good selection so far based on games that I remember well:

http://www.digitpress.com/dpsoundz/sid.htm

Add to this list "Defcom (http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/games/details.php%3FID%3D3507)" by David Whittaker. Not the best GAME but maybe the best theme song ever. Also, some of the tunes in "Castles of Dr. Creep (http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/games/details.php%3FID%3D3507)" were great AND the game was great!

C'mon folks, I know you know more. I need an assist here. If you're REALLY bored and want to scan through music yourself, click on the Defcom link above and listen online to any af the games in Lemon's C64 database. Just remember to share your favorites here.

I loved the Adventure Construction Set intro music.

And the jukebox music from Spare Change....

Nothing I can add, actually, although I liked some of The Last Ninja Remix.

Lots of good demo tunes from the High Voltage SID Collection...I listen to those as much as actual games at this point.

It's not really improved over the arcade version, but Legend of Kage sounds great on the C64. Better than NES certainly.

ugh, sid emulation.... the filters are not emulated accurately, if you want some MP3s ripped from real C64 hardware you can hit this site up http://soasc.dirtcellar.net/ they have the entire high voltage sid collection in mp3 format ripped from various sid revisions (8580, 6581 R2/6581 R4/etc) it really does make a difference in some songs, i compared them in that winamp sid player and these mp3s

i LOVE c64 and sids. The big tko is very nostalgic for me, as well as the donald duck game, hotwheels,Jumpman, Congo Bongo, Commando, Xenon, Mr Wimpy , the Super Pipeline series, and many more.
They were awesome tunes and to this day, but more so for me becaue i played them when i was little. I miss my SX with built in monitor. That machine was my gaming start that would become more than a national pastime for me, and the music to me then was better than what i heard on the radio (more recognizable or whatever).

Guess whart!?

I'm not using any Winamp plugin.

I'm using SP2W.

I'll check out that site for comparison sometime, but everything sounds right with SP2W to my untrained ears, anyway.

Spell of Destruction

More likely to found as its British name "Wizardry" (you can see why the game name was changed for the US!).

Missed Tim Follin... Bionic Commando (how to cover arcade track covers par excellance!), LED Storm and Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

And yeah there are loads of great demo or unknown SID tracks out there that I tend to "discover" when someone covers them at RKO. Like Gordian Tomb...

I was a big C64 kid in middle/high school and the SID music was definitely a big part of the experience. The SID tunes in these games are my short list of favorites...

Dragons Lair Part II (Rob Hubbard)
The Last V8 (Rob Hubbard)
Lazy Jones (David Whittaker)
Times of Lore (Martin Galway)
Turbo Outrun (Maniacs of Noise)

Cheers,
Ben

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between the R2 and R4 revisions of the 6581?
