View Full Version : to all cart collectors is there a stopping point

Well, I was sitting here looking through the forums and I noticed some of the game count sigs. This sparked me to wondering how many I had. I came up with 740 carts as a rough hand count trying to skip doubles and such. This includes everything from channel F to ds. Next came a question of is there ever a stoping point. So tell me what you think is there a stoping point in cart collecting and what is it. A complete set for a system or maybe every system but that raises more questions. Any way I have no plans to stop anytime so just wondering.

Some people have more sense than others; that's all I can say...
Why limit yourself to cartridges, anyway? People will collect disks (I do), discs (ditto; most all current games are on disc), cards, cartons, apple cores and digital downloads.

Well, I'm pretty sure the stopping point is when you can no longer fit any more games into your living space. This is about the same point where the "car" you drive to work is shoddily constructed out of Atari 5200 carts, NES ROBs, and a Mad Katz steering wheel setup.

Disc games just aren't very apealing to me, but yes in video game collecting disc games are an option and a major ongoing one. There is also everything from acade machines, to overlays. However I'm focusing on carts.

So you don't like modern games, so you think, and yet you talk about the issue in terms of the media format. Which is not what a gamer would do.
@ PixelSmasher: I was considering making a similar post, but you did it better. Bravo.

Its not that I don't like to play modern games, its just that there no fun to collect. Yes I do own sega cd to 360 games but a disc is just not a cartridge. Would you rather play atari classics on a 2600 or a playstation. The answer is always the 2600. The only thing better than an 2600 would be a games arcade counterpart. Guessing you didn't have a nes as a kid. lol
by the way congrats to pixelsmasher I think you right.

You could try tracking down obis ("spine cards") sometime. Lots of fun! ;)
So yeah...what is it that makes us collect games, again, as opposed to doilies or postage stamps? Oh, that's right, the game itself. As Sosage says.

I've got a large cupboard and once there is no more space in it I start selling things again..
This way I got a collection of roughly 5-600 Games and thats enough for me, as I like playing/using stuff and not just looking at it :P
Of course I'm a collector aswell and I have lots of things I'd never sell but well.. I just dont need 10.000 Games :)

It depends a lot on the person. I think that logically as you age, enter into marriage, have kids, job, commitments, etc, that it definitely slows down. At least it has in my experience. I don't think there is a magic number on when people stop, it could come down to a combinaton of feeling burnt-out, or just too much of a burden.

Good question. I'm not yet sure at what point I'll stope.

I haven't 'stopped' but I slowed down an awful lot. Part of it is because I've run out of room. Okay, that's a large part of it. Once I figure out a better way to organize what I have, I'll start it all up again. Then again, it took me to over 3,100 games and an ungodly amount of computers/consoles to hit that point, but still.

As everyone else has said, there really is no "stopping point". I think it's based on the individual, and the situation. Some of us collect for a complete collection of a system, some collect what thet grew up playing, or what they like. Some only collect carts, and some discs. I guess when you come home one night and trip over the stacks of carts on the floor, and fall face-first through your TV, that MAY be your stopping point? Or, you could just "carpet" a room with 2600 Space Invaders, Pac-Mans, E.T's, and Combats.......

for my money i will finish collecting when there is absolutly nothing to collect....or i guess i should say when i catch up with current games and have to at least slow down lol. even a terrible game is still 1 to be had for the collection.

My collecting for older systems may be over one day, as I get all the "good" and "important" titles. Defining those two terms tends to be difficult. I usually make a list of "good" and "important" titles for each system and try and buy them. Making the list and sticking to it, is very difficult for me.

A complete set for a system can be a physical stopping point I guess if you're not counting collecting duplicates.... or you can stop when it starts to hurt your wallet... but like others have said, why stop?
