OK here's a pretty specific request.

We're running a game show on Saturday and I need two arcade games that would have SOME familiarity to BOTH NES and Genesis players.

"Vs. Super Mario Bros" doesn't count because it was only on NES.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" might apply, as might "Contra" or "Castlevania". Though the games are all slightly different across platforms, at least the arcade concept should seem familiar between the three.

I need more options and I need 'em fast!

Beat-Em-Ups or Side-scrolling shooters.

Renegade, Bayou Billy, Mighty Final Fight, Code Name: Viper, and Rolling Thunder would be good on NES. Streets of Rage, Rolling Thunder 2 or 3, Altered Beast, and Golden Axe on Genesis.

Simple concept that is almost universal: Kick everyone's ass.

Additionally, if racing games are an option, Championship Pro-AM and Micro Machines on Genesis have NES counterparts.

No for god's sake no not RENEGADE. Or Bayou Billy. That's just torturous.

Unless you're going for an endurance round...

Well, if AVGN's there, it should be a good time for some sub-par, difficult-for-the-wrong-reasons gaming. :P

I don't think I was clear enough.

I'm looking for ARCADE games that would be familiar to both NES and Genesis players. The reason why is because in this game show, Angry Video Game Nerd (NES guy), Captain S (Genesis guy), and one of the DP guys will be competing head to head on a MAME cabinet. So I'm looking for games that might be familiar to them. I could also pick games that are unfamiliar to all of them which would also keep things even, but I think the edge would likely go to the Digital Press contestant.

Oobgarm, in your example above, Rolling Thunder would stick as it's an arcade game that also appeared on NES and Genesis.

Does this make more sense?

Ah, I see. Looks like I mis-read you there.

Rolling Thunder is still a good choice, I think. Kung Fu Master might work well, as would Gauntlet.

For a good oddball entry, Toobin' could work.

MEGA MAN

Mega Man wasn't released on the Genesis (in the US, anyway). Also, the arcade versions (fighting) of the game are totally different than the NES version (platforming). This is actually a really bad example but thanks for trying!

Some other suggestions so far are really good. I think I've got what I need!

Thanks as always, gang.

You should change the topic title to "Arcade games ported to BOTH Genesis and NES"

You could also expand the possibilities by substituting SNES for NES.

<sac> Yeah, I love playing Mortal Kombat on my NES with my imaginary friend & lover Princess Imahoe. </sac>

The only games I can think of are Battletoads or Double Dragon. I don't think Battletoads vs. Double Dragon is an Arcade game. Double Dragon got good reviews as an Arcade game, so that may work. Same with Battletoads.

Final fight games are fun Arcade games, but I don't think the Genny ever got a version though.

Good luck and I hope to see some video of this contest.

Hey, doesn't essentially have to be the NES. If Joe is going by James' Nintendo Nerd reference, then any Nintendo system should be up for grabs including the SNES.

It's too much constraint to find games that were common on a 8-bit, 16-bit, and arcade system. Even more so, during the coexistence of Genesis and NES (8-bit) in the early 90's, Nintendo had their 3rd party anti-competitive clause preventing companies for releasing any game for both systems.

Just my two cents.

I agree......

And "Contra" should be good......Challenging, not many complicated controller commads and fast game play....All of the Contra sequels seem to have pretty much the same related theory in any system, including "Contra Shattered Soldier" for the PS2...

Pac-Mania, Strider (Even though the NES and Genny/arcade versions are two completely different games), Klax, Raiden, and Rampart, are the only ones I can think of...

Strider is a really good one.

Ghouls and Ghosts, maybe Final Fight (mighty final fight nes, streets of rage and final fight CD)

someone mentioned Marble Madness, thats a good one.

How about Block Out? Block Out came out for Genesis and NES had Tetris.

Shinobi, Shadow Dancer.

hmmm...

Battletoads, Double Dragon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, Ghosts 'N Goblins.

As for an NES game (I know, not arcade, but still deserves the spot) Recca: Summer Carnival '92. Amazing shooter for the Famicom.

How about Ivan Ironman Stewart's Off Road

There were lots of great suggestions that I would have otherwise missed. Because the game show requires a certain balance I had to pick games that also SCORED similarly within the 50-second timeframe of the game show format.

That said, I chose Contra and Pac-Mania as these wild-card games. In both games you can score between 10k (if you suck) and 20k (if you're good), which fit well with the three contestant-chosen games.

Thanks for the input, folks. Wish I could broadcast the event live, I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
