Ive just played through Knights Quest on GB, an obscure but fun RPG. Not too in depth at all, decent but cliche'd battle system, but a fair game that took only 8 hours to beat. Ive played through earthbound, chrono trigger, Mystic Quest (secret of mana GB prequel), phantasy star, and ive tried others like FF1, Dragon Warrior 2, but i cant seem to find the next rpg to satisfy. Any recommendations(sp?)? There was one Game Boy rpg that i believe was japanese only and translated and was one of the best (or so im told) rpgs on the game boy. Any SNES, GB, NES, Genesis rpg suggestions would be great.

Final Fantasy 2-6, Dragon Quest 3-6, Live-a-Live (SNES RPG which wasn't released in English, but there's a translation patch), Phantasy Star IV, Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3... Those are all the ones that stand out off the top of my head.

Edit: As for translated GB RPGs. There aren't many. You probably mean God Medicine, or maybe Another Bible.

I love these threads.

Genesis
Shining Force (Tactical RPG, darker than the sequal. My favorite RPG.)

Shining Force II (Better looking than the original, bright SNES-esque color pallatte, blander character design)

Shining in the Darkness (old school dungeon crawler with the humor and style of the original Shining Force.)

LandStalker (Isometic action RPG, frustarting jumps, with all the style of a Shining game)

Crusader of Centy (Link to the Past knock off with a twist. Instead of items to use with puzzle solving you get differnt animal pals. Cute story involving a little boy who can't communicate with people, only animals.)

Shadowrun (an awesome non-linear rpg. Mature storyline and semi-futuristic modern setting. Mission based and totally engrossing)

Pirates! Gold! (Sid Meyer's classic port of an awesome PC game. Historically educational too! Choose a EUropean nation in the age of the Spanish main. Plunder villages, duel villains, steal ships, seige cities, and hit on... some really fucking ugly women. OK. More strategy than RPG but a really awesome title never the less.)

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Set in the little explored D&D universe Hollow World, WotES is a mind fuck of a traditional RPG. Top down overworld & First person dunegons. You're party finds themselves in an inescapable valley whose inhabitants are slowly being driven insane because the sun never sets. Looks and plays like an Ultima title.)

Warsong (straight up strategy game. Hard as balls too because hero's once killed stay dead. Challenging but definetly worth a play is games like Tactics Ogre or FFT are your thing.)

Beggar Prince (Recently, as in the last few years, released translation of an old school Taiwanese unlicensed game. Directly based on the story "Prince & the Pauper", difficult in the tradition of RPGs that didn't always clue you in on where to proceed next. Pretty looking thoughAnd humorous.)

Inferior w/less depth, but not too bad. More of an action/RPG, really.

Yeah, the three 16-bit Shadowrun games (including the Japan-only Sega CD version) are all very different. The Genesis version is by far the best, IMO. I could never get into the SNES version for some reason.

I remember the shining force games being really good. How about Breath of Fire? I know very little about them.

I do highly recommend saving up some cash and picking up a saturn and panzer dragoon saga. Easily my favorite RPG. Also, Mother 3 for GBA is really good and really cheap. It is in JP, but there are great translation guides available, plus the translation patch is almost done.

I have nothing new to add. Play Shining Force I or II now!

It's always good to see Skies of Arcadia getting some lovin'. It's too bad the sequal was canned. It's one incredible RPG and I have MANY fond memories of the game!

As for the systems you mentioned I recommend:

Phansaty Star IV (Genesis)
Beyond Oasis (Genesis)
Crystalis (Nes)
Willow (Nes)
Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Boy)
Final Fantasy Legend (Game Boy)
Sword of Hope (Game Boy)
Final Fantasy III (Snes)
