EDIT: AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd)
So for me this started about 4 months ago, and before I get into that let me give you a prologue of events leading up to this.
For many years I collected video games, as far back as my first nintendo in 2nd grade. As I moved from place to place so did my games. Then it happened.
I became old enough and responsible enough to move out. So I found my own pad and all was goign well......till money started running short. Ebay was a great idea and has helped alot but has also killed my inner soul. Back in 2004 I nearly sold every single video game that I owned. I sold my entire SNES collection of 148 games, system, controllers, boxed etc for just under $500 dollars. Even my NES collection got depleted to about nothing. Yea I still had my gamecube and that was it but I didn't have much. I guess you can say I hit rock bottom.
I started to collect again a short time after that but mostly it was for gamecube. Then guitar hero came out didn't think much of it till actually the second one came out and thats when it all started again. I literally bought a PS2 a month before the Wii came out just so that I could play guitar hero 2. From then on I was hooked for awhile again. I started to get PS2 games here and there and continued the gamecube collection, as well as the newly released Wii games.
Fast foward till now
A few months back I was shown a video of AVGN and loved it. Infact I sat there one nite watching all of them. I felt the bliss of what I was missing and how much I was missing it. I needed a plan and to do something. So back to ebay I went. Picked up some games for the NES and just began building my collections again. I'de say in the time i've invested so far i've done pretty good. So I guess my whole point of this is, has the AVGN had any effect/affect on what you collect now? Has he inspired you at all in any way?
Just trying to see if i'm not the only one in this craze of trying to relive my childhood.
Mike

To be honest I had to look up AVGN, because I didn't know what it stood for. But I only know what Angry Video Game Nerd is because people took about it on here a lot. I've never seen a single episode or video, so it doesn't have any effect on me. My internet video watching has really gone down since I've been on Satellite internet since January.

Yeah, the Angry Video Game Nerd DEFINITELY made me want an Atari 2600! That's the next thing I'm going to buy just so I can see the console I've missed all these years.
Sure, I've got the NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, DS, and DS Lite, but I've always wanted this oldie. That and a Sega Genesis!

The AVGN covers stuff that I already had in my collection for the most part. What I like about it is that it makes me want to replay stuff and laugh.

I don't like his style, so it doesn't have any effect on how I enjoy classic gaming since I don't watch this stuff after the first couple of times.

I first was shown AVGN back in July of '06 and by the time I watched his first four or five videos, he inspired me to start collecting for the Nintendo systems (in particular NES and SNES).

For me, I really got into the eBay buying mode about 5 years ago. I spent way too much on systems and games and got to the point that I became almost primarily a collector and hardly played my games anymore. This past year has been tough economically for me, so I've sold off about 75% of my collection. Basically I just kept the systems and games I truly care about which are the systems and games from my childhood mainly. I do miss having a huge and impressive looking collection, but at the same time I feel it was stupid to spend so much money on games that I would rarely or never play... I know if I ever get rich someday though, I'll be collecting again like a madman I'm sure... :P As for AVGN, he's spot on in most of his reviews and quite funny, but maybe just a bit too much over the top sometimes which can be annoying...
when I found out about AVGN, I watched like 20 of his videos (all at the time) at once, and I have to say it made me super cynical and an asshole for a night before I realised what I was doing....

Naw the avgn doesn't effect me for what i play.
People though seem to forget his reviews are for entertainment and,are not to be taken seriously.
Wich is the reason i do watch what the (avgn) reviews for to be entertain nothing more.

No, I dont see the point in letting anything alter my gaming. It'd be nice sometimes if I did because I can find some real stinkers, but I figure if not for all the crappy games on some systems, the gems just wouldnt shine as bright. Plus, it's hard to take advice from someone concerning something you were there for when it was still new many years after the fact. It's like someone telling you a yugo was a bad car when you used to own one. The point is lost when it's long been made moot. Still, the videos are funny and for that I can enjoy them. Much like the other angry game review guy from englend who talks fast, rants on JRPGs, and thinks MGS4 if for gay people who like watching video games instead of playing them.

I have sort-of a temper so... AVGN had an effect on me like this:
1. Games make me mad, yet I curse mostly under my breath, alot of "c'mon you f..." or "that's not f....in' fair".
2. Roommate gets me into watching Nintendo Nerd
3. Now I curse at full volume during any gameplay and try to create more interesting combos of expletives.
good times..
(In terms of classic gaming, yes I have been influenced to go out and purchase more NES titles, but not the "bad ones featured in most of his clips. Interest in AVGN led me to alot of other vids on YT or gametrailers with positive reviews of the hidden classics..)
No, not really. I am tempted to try the Bible games and Action 52 just to see how bad they really are, though.

I wouldn't say that he has an effect on my classic gaming. When I was a kid, I couldn't buy video games so, I had to rent them. It's always make me laugh when he do the review of a game I rented, such as a Simpsons game or Roger Rabbit. These games has I remember them, sucked.
Beside, we I want to buy old games, I always check their rating on GameSpot, to see if it worth buying them.

One time I noticed that he set his SNES games up horizontally. So I did that. That's about it.
The most effect AVGN has had on me was hitting the back button after the video was over.

I was looking for some old video game related videos on YouTube when i stumbled across his videos. I always enjoyed classic games but i wasn't really a collector at all. For some reason waching his videos made me want to play these old games again, and I started collecting. Now I'm hooked, I just got a Neo-Geo AES, the Vectrex is next. I guess I can thank the Nerd.

Negative on the influence. However, I think the character is very funny. It was refreshing to see similar thoughts on certain titles. His review and thoughts on Rambo for NES was very similar to the way I felt back when I was 9 years old. To me, Rambo was the worst game ever.

In interviews he mentions he doesn't hate,Castlevania II he's just disappointed with the game.
Since you stop watching his reviews afther watching two of them. Then you are taking what he states way too seriously.
It hasn't stop me from playing castlevania II just becuase the avgn doesn't like it.

When I met James a few months ago I wasn't ashamed to admit that I had never seen his videos. After meeting him I got caught up with his work and now have a better appreciation for what he does. Above all though, we've met a few times now and corresponded over e-mail inbetween... he's just a really good guy who is not only truly knowledgeable (which I find many of the YouTube critics lacking) but also a much better gamer than I expected.
However, my NES collection was pretty much collected long before I'd seen the first AVGN video.
Short answer: "No".

He reviews bad games with a verve I admire & relate too. Gosh Ive been saddend by some games Ive bought. But on the whole I've only bought games I knew I wanted, & continue to do so.
I started collecting last year & that's mainly due to gaining broadband internet access. The AVGN has caught me in this experiance personally, amongst the awfullness, & I now have a greater apprecition of the shitty than once was...Though I do not actively seek it out.

Not so much AVGN, but several "old school" video reviewers on youtube and elsewhere often bring attention to games that flew under my radar back in the day and give me the urge to try them out.

My thing about reviews and reviewers in general: if someone says "Game X stinks!" I'll probably go dig out Game X and try it to see if they're actually right. As with any hobby, there's a lot of "received wisdom" in video gaming, but unlike true wisdom, this sort of "dictated-not-by-the-crowd-but-by-the-loud" business changes with the wind. A game is really cool one moment, and then it's so yesterday's news.
I tend to root for the underdog, so by God, when I heard sometime back that Mythicon's 2600 games sucked whole new holes into the space-time continuum, I went and played them for myself. Now sure, I found out that the Mythicon games blow goats. But I tend to like a lot of games that no one else does - and I don't let anyone else dictate or overly influence what I like or do not like.

I tried Master Chu & The Drunkard Hu shortly after seeing AVGN's review of it. In short, yeah, the reviews do have an effect on my collection (Sometimes, I'll try a game that I hear is crap)

About a year ago he was the funniest thing i have seen on the internet. Now I go watch his vids and I don't really think hes videos are funny anymore. But the good thing is is that he mentioned some games i have never heard of, so i played them. but, hes just doing the reviews for a comedian audience.

Never seen or heard the guy myself and have very little interest in doing so.
(Crotchety late-thirtysomething rant ahead)
As the hobby of playing classic games actually matters to me a great deal I think I'd have a hard time listening to anybody who starts discussing the subject from the vantage point of hostility or condescension. A hypothetical 13-year-old boy, for example, is telling me nothing I don't already know by explaining how much the graphics suck on an Atari 2600. Of course they do, comparatively speaking. Similarly, AVGN was born in 1981 according to Wiki, I was playing a number of these games literally before he was born. He'd be hard pressed to tell me something I don't know.
Nope. I have no use for the man. Just another Internet flash in the pan making a name for oneself through peddling cynicism and negativity.

He bashes crappy games, but that's just part of his gimmick. He's actually very knowledgeable about the hobby in general, and can make good points without trying to come across as funny or dumb.

Just another Internet flash in the pan making a name for oneself through peddling cynicism and negativity. The AVGN doesn't put down games for "obsolete" graphics or sound. That's not what he's about. Actually, try watching a couple and see for yourself, and realize, James Rolfe is just doing a character, he isn't serious about most of it. In fact, there is a video of him as a child when he first got a NES, and his frustration at playing Super Mario Bros. for the first time.

So I guess my whole point of this is, has the AVGN had any effect/affect on what you collect now? Has he inspired you at all in any way?
Why would the AVGN possibly have an effect on what I collect?
Maybe if I waited and only played and collected games that "Others" praised and reviewed. But thats just not me. See, call me crazy, but I have something called an opinion. This, backed up by my natural curiosity, allows me to enjoy whatever past time activity I choose to induldge myself in to it's fullest.
I do enjoy some of his videos, but I hated his review on Castlevania II, and I would never take a review of his to heart.

I like his reviews, but I never get influenced. In fact, I want all the games he has reviewed!
For example, I remember playing Halloween for the 2600 and loving it. Even now, I think it was pretty good for it's time. Yet he did not like it. However, everything he said was true, but it made me laugh and not hate the game.
He's a great entertainer and I look foward to his videos whenever they get posted. In fact, I got the F shirt!
