Yes this game is very rare and this one is very complete, and in very good shape to boot, but over $600 with 8 days to go? :o :o I need this game as well to complete my NES collection, but I won't be shelling out that kind of coin for this game!

It's mob mentality bidding at its finest. Everything Dave lists will be bidding up way too high. You won't see me bidding on any of his stuff.... will save me money in the end. This will probably top out at $800... well, I hope. :0 Can I get a SE manual? Please. kthx.

why would the bidding of an item go higher than usual just because of who the seller is? There are many of respectable sellers on ebay? Why is he special?

@griking: One thing is that Dave of dl-c has the best quality stuff. Another is that people seem to get caught up in the moment when a seller is selling off a huge collection individually. Could be they figure they can get a ton of stuff at once. Could be they spread themselves out too thin by accident? Who knows exactly.
@Danny: The game went complete for $200 bc it didn't have a pic. D_N_G snagged that one, and he sold me his extra box. A SE manual went for $150 recently, our own orrimarko snagged it. A sealed SE went private deal for $800, to a requested to be unnnamed NESworlder. Otherwise, it's been loose SEs all around. Add in what I described to griking, and you've got a grand.
ascorbic is one of the regular collectors who needs a few more rare titles. pa_nes_ian is an idiot, pfking and evil690 have been around for a while, and the others are newbs for the most part. (the nintendo ones are probably someone's second account. One is probably justus@attbi.com)
If it ends up higher than a NWC, then we have some truly dumb people out there.

Dave I hear you, but still you gotta admit that is f***ing nuts! Yes his games are of a very high quality, but 1 grand for that game is WAY too high! I have seen complete ones go for on ebay for right around $300 (in the last year or so) then most recently a couple hit $500. If you could buy a sealed one for $800 (I realize this was a private deal), why the hell would you pay a grand for this, regardless of its high quality? My point I am trying to make is not intended to belittle your intelligence at all, its obvious you know what you are talking about, just sharing my point of view. :D
I will pay for quality, but even I have my limits, as I am sure you do to. :)
Right now for my NES collection I need 4 games: Myriad 6 in 1, Stadium Events, NWC and Hot Slots, that's it. (not counting sachen games) I realize I will have to pay a good amount of coin to get those 4, but if it means shelling out over 1 grand, it will be for NWC and not stadium events. About 90-95 percent of my games have the box and about 60-70 percent have the manuals. Hopefully that will close significantly when I do a trade with Joe in the next month or so (I have lots of dups so let me know if you need anything too, Dave!)
I plan on sitting back and watching the sparks fly on this auction.
6 days to go and the high bid is now at: $1075.96
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Hey man, no problem. I'm not condoning what these people are doing at all. :) It IS way high - and you'd think these people would have more sense.
I'd definitely go with the $250 SE and then use the grand for a NWC as well. Didn't a grey go for $1100 a few weeks ago? Hopefully everyone will stop bidding now. I HOPE.
Thanks for the offer, but my bankroll is too tied up right now. Maybe in 6 months. ;)

Just want to point out that since 1999 there have only been 4 complete NTSC Stadium Events on Ebay, including the sealed one.
In this same time span there have been a little over 40 loose for auction, and who knows how many of those were bought and reauctioned, I can tell you at least 5 that fall in that category.
Also in the time span of 5 years there have been 2 Individual SE boxes and 3 individual SE manuals
All of the other complete ones you have seen were the European PAL release and yes some idiots paid up to 300 multiple times for a PAL copy
For the record only complete copies on Ebay:
DreamTR's friend's copy
DL-Collectibles copy
ActionPlus' Sealed copy
My copy ( I got lucky my seller had 0 feedback a poor description and no picture.)
DreamTr also has a complete copy, so that makes 5 known complete copies in the known existance to the NES community
1K is pretty high, but you have to look at how many people need this game to complete a collection, and how many copies are available, and how often it shows up, extremely low supply and extremely high demand. I wouldnt be suprised if some collectors havent saved up for a long time in case one of these shows up. People pay what it is worth to them and all that matters is that they are happy with their purchase.

Your points are well taken, I know what you mean that many people (including me) are looking for this game. However, I must reiterate what I said before, 1K is WAY too much! If this game hit between 500 & 600 I could see that, but this IS rediculous. If I would be saving money for a game, it would be the NWC cart, not Stadium Events. That game is much more rare than SE.
IMO this is a joke how high this auction is.
Sylentwulf wrote: Around $1,000 seems normal to me all things considered. Guess that's just me though Frankly, I won't ever spend more than $50-$60 on a single game, even if it's the last one I need.
Around $1000 seems normal?!?!?!   I don't think so. This is the first time I have ever seen this game hit this high and unless you find this game in the wild (which I doubt you will), you won't be getting this game ever (If you would only pay up to $50 or $60 for a single cart) or unless you run into a completely stupid seller.
Far be it from me to judge someone else, I have made my share of bidding and overpaying blunders, but I believe if you are paying over 1K for ANY game, it had better be a much more rare title than this (regardless of it's completness). DP guide 10's will fetch 1K, I don't think 9's should.

Or maybe someone pointed them to this thread which caused them to have second thoughts.
I'd be pissed if I were the seller.
I wonder what amount they thought they were placing a bid for. I can see someone entering an extra digit by mistake but there was no way they would have won with a $100 bid.

The winner must be speculating. I think he's taking a big chance. There is no gurantee this game will be in demand 20 years from now. Look at comic books and baseball cards. Most have dropped significally in price over the last 10 years. Magic cards have dropped, collector dolls, plates and porcelin figurines have dropped over the years as well. I think the buyer would have been better off buying $1800 dollars of General Electric stock. Im with sylentwulf. I wouldnt pay over 50 or 60 bucks for a game. Just my opinion.

Just how rare IS this game, anyway?
I guess only a collector would pay more then a couple hundred for a game....if I just wanted to PLAY that I know I would'nt. :)
Most I ever spent on a game to play (and also cause I knew it was semi-rare) was a mint condition complete Wing Commander Kirathi Saga for the PC, and that was only $150. :D

Just how rare IS this game, anyway?
2,000 copies were produced and sold over a three-month span. Whatever went unsold (which could be anywhere from 1 to 1,990, as far as I'm concerned) was recalled and destroyed.
So...less than 2,000 made. That's the only definite answer.
In other words, several hundred percent of the amount of NWC's made, which goes for a bit LESS.
Joe, I hope ya don't mind if I reference eBay to make the guide value for this game a bit higher. Nowhere near THAT obviously, but...yeah.
D_N_G
05-13-2003, 06:04 PM
i think the guide value is fine. remember the cart will fetch 200-400 regularly. a complete copy is what these bidders are paying for and that is a little harder to find. if they wanted just the cart they have had 50+ chances over the past few years

Why only 2000? I know Nintendo soon took over the rights for the pad and the game and made it themselves (I used to play it with some kids when I babysitted for them) but even for a nitch game like this, ONLY 2000 in three months seems awfully low.

also even with 2000 produced, (remember this was a test market right? and even in a defined northern area, at select retailers like woolworths, so not all the US got these and it was marketed to a select small audience) how many were sold?, and out of those sold, how many remain complete today? that knocks your numbers waaaaaay down.
like i said earlier in this thread, there are only 5 documented complete copies of this known to the collecting community as of now. does this mean that there aren't more out there? no but i can guarantee you there arent many more
i can also guarantee you that there are tons of NES collectors that want a complete NTSC NES collection with complete games, and only a few of them can accomplish this. low supply very high demand and now with this auction you can guarantee higher exposure will cause even more demand, will the value reach that high again, who knows? to me is it sane to pay that much?, definitly not, but at least i know there is one more copy in someones hand that will take care and preserve it

I would agree, the guide value of $200 is fine. I gotta admit, I never thought I would see that ending value. BTW, the seller got some great prices on most of the games (like TMNT tournament fighters went for well over $100, but I don't see that too often complete on ebay). I would have liked to win one of his auctions, everything he sold looked awesome, but not $1836 awesome. :D :D Good for him though! :)

:D lol
Dave - and you thought that I was crazy about the manual!
Honestly, as far as I know, I was the winner of the last loose cart and manual a couple of months ago. I paid more for the manual than I would have liked (sorry Dave!) but $200 for the cart was the ceiling for me, and I got lucky with the win.
I look at it this way, if I needed to sell them, I think I could and not loose any money. Since I don't plan to, I figured that they don't show up too often (40 in 4 years is relatively small) and I might as well just get it out of the way.
It's now the centerpiece of my NES collection, which will definitely rival d-l collectibles in terms of quality when all is said and done. In fact, I bought four games from his recent sales, and they didn't meet my standards at all (I"M WAY TOO PICKY.) When I'm finished, I hope to have the mintiest complete NES collection out there, but we'll see.
Anyway, $1800+ is just plain dumb. I can't help but think that this will harm others from getting the game in future auctions, but such is life.
All I can say is that I am glad that I got what I did when I did.

I wonder what people are upset about more -- the fact that the buyer was able to sucker someone into paying that much for the game, or the fact that a seller was stupid enough to PAY that much for a game.
When you boil it down to the bare facts, folks, you have a piece of plastic and 20 year old technology containing a crappy game that orginaly sold for no more then $50.
$1800 is the highest I've ever seen a video (including PC games) go for. :o
