I have a friend who is selling a dreamcast - Has 1 controller and all cables. Comes with NFL 2K1 and another racing game.

Wondering if its worth $20 bucks to pick up as a spare?

If it is a predated October 2000 version then yes because it is very easy to mod and play any game on

Hmm.... I am not sure. How about Post Oct 2000. Still worth it?

well if you want a spare, then I'd say $20 is worth it. If its a friend of yours then why not? its better than spending $20 on one and paying a complete stranger. Dreamcast is a good system and I'd pay $20 for one any day.

like the above says either way it's still a good system and i would if i were you

Quick question: What do you mean by easy to mod to play ALL game?
What games fall into the catagory of ALL?

Also, where does it say the date?

if you have a dreamcast pre october 2000 you can burn games to a cd-r and play them. There are a ton of emulators that are already established. I got my dreamcast about 2 weeks ago and have done nothign but burn the torrents for the snes, nes, genesis, mame, and other emu's and games. very easy. Just make sure you have a prog called Disc Juggler, it helps alot

I personally have tested this on SEVERAL Dreamcasts manufactured after October 2000.

Nope , pop in the burned CD-R and off you go. I mean really that rumor was started back in 2003 or 2004 and it just won't die.

I bet I can find an old thread where I've had this same discussion 4 years ago. LOL

I think you can play the majority of Dreamcast imports with one of the various boot disc available. As for the sale, a Dreamcast is definitely worth $20. You will find many good games for it as well so it will all be worthwhile.

I agree, I had my original Dreamcast die on me for no reason awhile ago and a spare was a great choice.

I got a small amount of burned games I admit, but they came from dreamcasts from goodwill and friends.

I would buy one for 20 bucks although I already have one.

A side note don't download games. After I bought the DC I probably d/l'd 75 games and have put everyone into the system to make sure it worked but that's about it. I have no love for the games since they don't mean anything to me and did not cost me anything. There you have my thoughts on the matter.

It's not an amazing price but yeah that's about what a dreamcast is worth.

I think it goes back farther than that even...

About 2 years ago a pawn shop was dumping off their DC systems for $10 with hookups and 2 controllers each, just too bad they only had 2 units. But even so, $20 is the current going rate around here at just about everywhere.

As for the burning of games, it's up to you. I much rather run off original discs than burned copies. Even if it's a system no longer available, burning images just feels wasteful and would be better off mounting the images and emulating off a computer. A burned DC game disc is worth less than the disc that hasn't been written to.

That started because the first game rips to appear DID require a boot disc, I know because I have some, but as the method improved later releases and all following releases no longer required the boot disc, I beleive even the titles that originallt required the boot disc we're even re-ripped so they didn't require it either.................

Even better though, besides commercial rips are several emulators, homebrew and even un-released commercial titles that showed up ready to burn and play!

Personally, I'd pay $20 for just about any home console if I don't already have it. As for a spare, I wouldn't bother. It's not an unfair price, but you could probably find a Dreamcast for 5 or 10 bucks at a thrift without too much effort. Granted, you may not get the cables, controller, and games that way, though.
