View Full Version : 1st time real mod project

I'm going to purchase my own soldering iron tomorrow. I'd like to learn how to do mods and stuff, but to start out simple, I'd like to try to mod a Model 1 genesis for true stereo output via the headphone jack. Any instructions, or is this too hard for a beginner? I'm not too worried about the genesis, as I have another one, and an X-eye.
I say its a real mod project, since I have to use a soldering iron.

its really not hard at all from what I remember. Just make sure you have some circuitry to try soldering to first off. It makes things easy and remember to use the flux and use the solder sparingly. I used tape to cover the area and mark it before I drilled and used smallest to larger drill bits to not break the shell of the system. Take you time and have fun. :) This place rocks for advice as well..

Yeah, its my first time. I won't start until next week, I'm trying to get information on the parts I need. My friend is going to donate some dead arcade pcbs for me to practice soldering. LED modifications is something I would love to do, but I think that might be beyond me at this point. Where do you guys go for your parts? Radio Shack?

I went to Radio Shack to get most of my supplies. LEDs however I bought on eBay. It was like $3 for 50 where they are like $3 for 2 at Radio Shack. I also bought a cheap volt meter in order to check resistances and whatnot. It ended up being very helpful when I burned out sections of my circuit board and had to re-wire it.
If you want to do LED modification, the Genesis 1 is the easiest thing to do it on. All you may have to do is enlarge the hole that it sits in and change out the LED. There is no soldering required at all.

Some of the best places for hobby level electronics.
Shipping's not that much but you might want to stock up on a bunch of stuff to make it more cost effective.
LED's, wire, solder, various resistors(most LED's HAVE to have a resistor in series with them), maybe some swiches, buttons, etc...
There's probally a lot of other stuff that that people who do mods can recomend.
I don't really do mods myself(just occasional repairs) but I do quote electronics parts for a living. For $10-$20 shipped you should be able to get a box full of goodies that will last for some time.

Good work.
LED replacement is a great start. If you own any consoles or arcade equipment, it is always nice to be able to troubleshoot and repair any problems you might have (essential for arcade stuff).
