I recently bought the "Sega Remote Arcade System" (why they didn't just call them wireless Genesis controllers I'll never know), and I have to say I'm impressed. Most attempts at wireless controllers in the 90's were much, MUCH worse. However, they do have a problem with playing angles. If not aimed straight at the sensor, it will not detect the input.
I took one (yes, I bought two) of the wireless dongles apart (pics if requested) and it seems to be fairly simple. Does anyone think it would be possible to replace the current IR system with parts from the Nintendo Wavebird controller? I've never taken one apart and don't have too much technical knowledge, so any help is appreciated.

I couldn't imagine that being possible without massive changes to the controller and genesis. The controller isn't designed to output RF signals and the genesis isn't designed to accept them.

You may be able to use something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-Remote-Control-Extender/dp/B000C1Z0HA/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2a_2_txt?pf_rd_p=304485601&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-2&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000246UG2&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1CBQDVMJYCYT7WS9SBRQ) to convert your controllers from IR to RF.

Yeah I was hoping to use parts from the wavebird dongle and controller and place them inside the Genesis Controller/Dongle.
Will that RF extender really work? I'm willing to try it but it seems like all I could do is chang the receiver with that and not the controller.

If the wireless genesis controllers work like a regular IR remote control then I imagine it would work. Of course i've never used the thing so I don't know for sure. Here's a review (http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/04/next-generation-remote-control-extender-review/).

Thanks for the info! From the looks of that it does appear to be my best shot...a long shot for sure, but something I am definitely going to look into. I think because that unit is battery powered it will be easiest to configure.
