View Full Version : Whats considered the best gba pokemon title?
The title says it all,
What's generally considered the best of the five(?) releases gba pokemon titles?
I've been looking around review sites but i'm getting confused between them all.
I wanted to get stuck into the most complex/ advanced/ most fun/ graphically best one of them all but would appreciate some help.
many thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm anxious to hear people's answers.
I'm about to start playing my first-ever Pokemon game, and it has been decided that it will be LeafGreen. I'm waiting for the strategy guide to arrive in the mail, and then I'm going to start.

the game is funner without a guide. the exploration/discovery is one of the best aspects of RPG games and pokemon in general. dont be afraid to make a couple mistakes here and there. the game is fun and great.
also, i never played any of them past pokemon red/blue (yeah, im old...)

Ah, but mistakes are easy to make, and they can cost you a lot of work. Using a unique TM on the wrong Pokemon, for example.

its a game. you'll enjoy it anyway. you'll be fine. they are easy games, you will decimate them regardless.

Out of the five GBA versions of Pokémon, Emerald would most likely be your best bet for what you want. It is mainly like Ruby and Sapphire but with many additions (which can be found here: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Emerald_Version ). FireRed and LeafGreen are remakes of the original Blue/Red/Green with a few added features: (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_FireRed_and_LeafGreen_Versions ).

Dunno what's considered the best but IMHO the best GBA Pokemon game is Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire hands down and ten ways to Sunday. :villagepeople:

does that mean that for all intents and purposes there are only two generally different versions of pokemon on gba give or take the enhancements and the few changes?

Emerald is the most complex and advanced one. It has the Battle Tower and all sorts of additions.
Ruby & Sapphire are essentially the same game. LeafGreen and FireRed likewise are identical to one another.
FireRed and LeafGreen are good "starter" games. Just do like Jorpho says and don't use your TMs. Ever. Unless you can buy more later at a store. Which...well, the guide will tell you that. Otherwise don't waste the TMs, especially the ones that gym leaders give you.
The guide is very useful for several things (no matter which game you choose):
-Having a chart of which types are good against other types (essential until you basically memorize it, which you will if you play long enough)
-Knowing what moves may be available for your guys later so that you can plan their evolution
-Knowing what Pokemon will be available in general so that you can plan which six you will take into the final battle and start growing them accordingly. Otherwise you will be doing quite a bit of level-grinding later in the game to train.
It's also extraordinarily helpful if you can get all three starters from the get-go. They're all very decent to good, and will most likely be ones that you'll want to take with you into the final battle.

see i think the guide ruins the overall exploration, charm and discovery of the game. i really really think you will have an over funner experience without a guide. unless youre a super power gamer and only care about getting omgwtfbbq everything in the game and maxing everything 100% and being the most efficiently well oiled machine, dont use a guide.
some stuff is good to know (like which types are better for which) but thats easily checked online and also almost obvious (electricity beats water etc).
experimenting and exploring possibilities is one of the best things about pokemon games, using the guide ruins it completely. the story is mediocre to say the least so if youre just using hte guide to ruin all the charm for you... you might as well load up gameshark honestly.

i vote for fire red for the gba, but the're all about the same. If you have a ds just play diamond.

leaf green is the best place to start, it has all the familar polkemon like pikachu charmander and squirtle, and its a remake of the first gb game with a metric assload of new stuff (including a bunch of the newer pokemon once you've gotten to a certain point) I felt leaf had the better exclusives over red but either is virtually the same game

True But Yellow is hands down the best and can be played on the GBA

My favorite one would have to be Red Version. It's old, but it's the most fun to play, in my opinion.

QFT. Yellow owns. Ash/Pikachu/Kanto Region ftw..
(if you DO have a DS..
Diamond/Pearl are fun too, the graphics are great, the music is even kind of good, but the story is weird/repetitive, and overall it lacks a bit of the personality of Yellow.. plus it tends to be slowwwwwwwww like molassessssssss during battle scenes. On the upside though, there are around 300+ Pokemon to catch in it, after taking out event releases, version exclusives, and those obtainable by locking-in FireRED/LeafGREEN or trading. Also, I find raising berries and mixing poffins (pokemon treats, made by 'stirring' berry-sludge with the stylus) to be strangely addictive, almost as much as catching the critters. There is a bunch of extra content in D/P, such as earning ribbons and partaking in contests with your pokes.)
I also agree with POOFTA!, don't use a guide. Sure, you can EV train and make sweepers and such, but it's really unnecessary within the context of the game, only useful if you are battling online or something.. Just play and experiment however you want. In regards to TM's, man I don't think I've ever used more than 1 or 2 in any Pokemon game during my initial playthrough.
So, it's story and personality for Yellow, or graphics and amount of content for D/P. Of course the OP mentions gba titles, so it's Yellow or Emerald, I'd say. So... no DS?

You can't go wrong with Gold/Silver/Crystal.
Frankly, if you ask me, those were the best generations of Pokemon games.

Two years ago I really wanted to get into the Pokemon games but didn't know where to start. I decided to do a little research and I'll list everything here in hopes of helping out someone else looking to get into the series.
Nintendo always releases two identical versions (Save for different Pokemon) simultaniously and then later releases a remixed version of the previous two. The Remixed version usually adds extras and additional areas, although the core game is mostly the same. Because the Remixed version is usually the best I just buy those.
Handheld________Game______________Remix
(GB)-------------Red\Blue--------------Yellow
(GBC)------------Gold\Silver------------Crystal
(GBA)------------Ruby\Sapphire---------Emerald
(GBA)------------Fire Red\Leaf Green----(No Remix) Itself is a remake of Red\Blue)
(DS)-------------Diamond\Pearl----------(Just wait... It's comming)

Dragon Warrior Monsters was a great Pokemon style game. My friend had it for the GBC back in Highschool and we would always play it during class. I loved it.
Although I'm quite skeptical of DWM Joker on the DS. Not sure if I wanna give it a try or not.
