Rubbing alcohol can also work wonders.

If it's on the back half of a cartridge, you could consider just swapping out the rear side of the cartridge casing. Assuming you also have some spare carts and the appropriate bit to open it.
I had a copy of Dracula-X (Draculax? The fiber supplement for vampires?) for SNES, and I got a dremel out and shaved a fine layer of the plastic off where someone had written their name on the front. Looked better than "Tobar L." in sharpie, at any rate.

Does using a dry erase marker work as well on carts as it does on optical media? A black dry erase marker cleaned up my used copy of Resident Evil GC just dandy, but I don't think I ever got around to testing it out on my sharpie'd N64 carts.
Hmm, where did I put that marker....?

A touch of Goo Gone rubbed on a paper towel goes a long, long way. I use that for rough, hard surfaces, like the tops of CDs, cases and the plastic on carts. For the paperish part, it depends on the surface. If it is glossy, you can actually work wonders by coloring over the problem area with a dry erase marker and then wiping it regularly.

If it's over any labels, fuhgeddaboutit.
If it's on the plastic, get some solder flux remover. It comes in a spray bottle, and it totally rules. I use it to get rid of all sorts of gunk on stuff at work as well as its intended use, and it works great on magic marker, too. Just be careful to not get it on any labels or it'll mess them up.

Goo Gone is best.

Rubbing alcohol can also work wonders.
On the rare occasion i've needed to deal with those pesky markers, i've had great success with the rubbing alcohol.
Just be careful, too much rubbing can pull up the color on the disc art itself.

Goo Gone is best.
I haven't had good experiences with Goo Gone. It didn't take off sticker residue, it didn't take off marker, all it did was make my games smell like citrus.

Goo Gone, Rubbing Alki, and Magic Erasers are all items I use. I HATE it when its on the label though.....those are tricky.

if there a sticker on a label use a hair dryer to heat up the unwanted sticker and slowly pull it off the label.

Maybe you are rubbing it with orange juice. :) I get the best with Goo Gone, alcohol and a rubber eraser. Top notch.

Nail polish remover containing acetone? Well, I've never tried it on a cardtridge but, it worked well on other surfaces such as plastic or metal. But, you must be very cautious if you use it because it will damage any printed surface such as a label.

You should try the blood of your enemies then rinse with the tears from the lamentation of your foe's women.

Don't get Goo-B-Gone on any labels or stickers that are colored....!!!

I've always just used a normal white eraser. This has worked wonders for me. I once had a Nintendo 64 cart with a price written on the back label. Much to my suprise it took the Sharpie ink off without damaging the label.

Deep Woods Off works pretty well, but be VERY careful with it on plastics. I actually melted some stuff I was removing permanent marker writing from. It also works great on metals, just spray it on and the Sharpie runs right off.

What would you recommend for getting marker off the label/art of a DVD (in this case, ZOE: 2nd Runner)?

Well it is a problem indeed.
What if it's written on the labels??? Alcohol will damage the paper and the colored surface.

If the label is glossy then a little bit of alchohol and a soft cloth will get it off. Don't use too much or rub it in too much though or it start to fade the label. And wipe up and excess right away. The only thing that I have not been able to use alchohol on is non-glossy cardboard. Does anyone have a solution for getting marker off that?

maybe i'm the only one, but i kinda like buying a cart and finding someone's name written on it. really seems to connect you to that time and place in that person's life, even though you've never met them. a time when someone so prized it, they wrote their name on it. now discarded, you have it.
or maybe i'm just odd.

Write over it with a dry erase marker, then wipe it off and the name will come off too.
The best way to do it.

lol @ steel wool and belt sander. :D A bit over the top I'd think. :) Alchohol + tooth brush sounds about right. :) God i hate when people writeon games... ugh... Stickers too of course. also how the hell do some games get so dirty... Some people must just live in incredible filth!

Alcohol won't help. It will destroy the label completely.

well I wasn't talking about the label. ;) Marker is almost always written on the cart, not the label anyways.
