I'm sure there has been a "Top XX" list done on DP, but I thought it would be interesting to see what your personal favorite classic games and systems are. Here's the criteria.

List your top 20 favorite classic games (pre-Dreamcast) and your top 5 favorite classic systems (pre-Dreamcast). Order is important. List your absolute favorite as #1 and work your way down in that fashion.

For your favorite games, you must list games from atleast 3 different systems and 2 different companies (i.e. Sega, Sony). For your favorite systems, you must list atleast 2 different companies systems. This is to try to eliminate atleast some fanboyism. Pre-Dreamcast arcade, handheld & pc games and systems will be accepted.

As far as popular games that have appeared on multiple systems. I think it would be best to list the exact version to be as accurate as possible. A game like Doom was on many systems and was fairly similar on all of them. However, some versions have more levels and monsters, or run smoother etc. So, be sure to identify the exact versions on your lists.

I will count US, Euro and Asian games as the same game if they are on the same system and totally unchanged from region to region. If there is a game that is significantly different in a certain region, just let me know. I will also accept games released on systems lesser than the Dreamcast, but were released 1999-present; Such as Neo Geo games, since some Neo games have come out in the 2000's yet they were made on the same old Neo Geo hardware from the early 90's.

Remember, this is your personal favorite games, not which game is best. For instance, I know the Arcade version of Ridge Racer is better than the PS version. Yet, I've never played the Arcade version, but I love the PS version... ;)

The point system:

For games (1-20)
1 = 40 points
2 = 38 points etc...

For systems (1-5)
1 = 40 points
2 = 32 points etc...

Thanks! I thought it was a good idea too. I actually took quite awhile to think about exactly how I wanted to do it. It took me forever to decide my lists too :) It's going to be a lot of work for me, but I still think it's worth it and it'll be cool to see how the lists shape up over time.

I going to go ahead and count your Megadrive games as Genesis games. There's no difference at all in Sonic 3 & Knuckles between the Genesis and Mega Drive version, or any MD/Genesis game of the same name, is there?

Yes, but the problem is that the list is already well underway with everyone understanding that no DC games will be allowed... I really would not like to re-do the whole list! It's quite time consuming!!! So please leave any DC games off of your list. I know the DC could go either way as far as being classic or modern. There are varying opinions. I just decided that it was modern since it's graphics are on par with PS2, Gamecube & XBOX. It's also not quite 10 years old yet... ;) From Wikipedia, "The Sega Dreamcast was first available in JP on November 27, 1998". Thanks!

Toshinden was awesome in late 1995! :D The graphics were just plain amazing at the time. The controls...well, you could get used to them! ;)

Lists updated!

I have some questions for you all concerning some things...

Do you think I should group together the SNES and PS versions of Chrono Trigger? Iirc, the PS version has CG movies that the SNES version doesn't. Are there any other major changes?

Should I group together "Super Mario All-Stars" and "Super Mario All-Stars/ Super Mario World"...?

Should I group together Neo Geo MVS and AES games of the same name? After all, they are exactly the same hardware and software etc...

Should I not accept any games released from 2000 until now, even if they were on systems prior to the Dreamcast, including the Neo Geo?

I guess that's all for now. Any opinions are welcomed. Thanks to all that contributed so far. It's been kinda grueling to hash out the numbers, but it's also very interesting to me to see where all of the games and systems are ranking.

Do you think I should group together the SNES and PS versions of Chrono Trigger? Iirc, the PS version has CG movies that the SNES version doesn't. Are there any other major changes?

Should I group together "Super Mario All-Stars" and "Super Mario All-Stars/ Super Mario World"...?

Should I group together Neo Geo MVS and AES games of the same name? After all, they are exactly the same hardware and software etc...

Should I not accept any games released from 2000 until now, even if they were on systems prior to the Dreamcast, including the Neo Geo?

I guess that's all for now. Any opinions are welcomed. Thanks to all that contributed so far. It's been kinda grueling to hash out the numbers, but it's also very interesting to me to see where all of the games and systems are ranking.

That's a bit of a tricky question as the multi-card/disc releases cover 2 or more games that already got a single release. I'd say not combining them would be the best choice. While it's true that the differences between the Chrono Trigger on the SNES and PS1 may look small at first, CT on the PS1 wasnt marketed on it's own. It came packed with FFIV. Also, most of the Mario games minus Mario:the Lost Levels each was released individualy on their own. If your going to group some together, group em all. The problem should be obvious then why that's a problem. The list would read like a compilation list then.

The same game across multiple systems should count as one IMO. I don't think it's worthwhile to get into the nitty gritty of separating out different ports of the same game. I specified Genesis when I voted for Flashback and another poster specified Sega CD; apparently we have a difference of opinion as to which style of cutscene is better in that game, but really, we voted for the same game.

I think it's rather lame to vote for a compilation such as Super Mario All-Stars. I don't think that should be allowed at all (it's not a game, it's a set of games).

I can't really narrow down 20 games, but I'm surprised at the lack of Bonk support, as I think he was one of the greatest game sytem mascots of all time. I'm really not that surprised due to the lack of respect he and the TG/PCEngine get, but in my opinion these were some of the greatest platform games ever made.
