I never really noticed that on the forum main page, in the description for the "Classic" forum, it says anything older than PS2 is considered classic... Now, I've always felt that the Dreamcast belonged in the PS2, GC & XBOX group. I mean, the DC has many 3d and 2d games that outshine MANY games on those systems... The N64, Playstation & Saturn absolutely pale in comparison to the DC. I just feel that the DC shouldn't be considered "Classic" quite yet... It still feels too Modern to me. What do you all think?

The Dreamcast has classic gaming on it, and it is considered a "classic", but yeah, it is still a modern system.

As I recall, when the Modern and Classic forums were initially set up, the question of where to place the Dreamcast was considered, and it was a close call. My recollection is that the decision was to call the PS2 the beginning of Modern, and it was an admittedly arbitrary decision, but a line had to be drawn somewhere, and it was drawn with the launch of the PS2.
The DC, coming out a year earlier, landed in Classic.
new-gen consoles freaks starting coming in with the ps2 and xbox, so the holyness that is the dc is thankfully free of that filth....

I've never called the DC a "classic" system and always found it puzzling that many people here do.
To me, it's a modern system.

Well I think it will be classic in a few years (2-3) for now it is still pretty modern

I think it should become classic when the PS2, Gamecube and XBOX become classic. So I'd give it another 2-3 years as well. :)

lol the piece of plastic was classic 2 years after its release. ive never seen something so popular crash and burn so fast. but i deter... its classic, as far as these forums are concerned. say what you will about it, but DP has it bluntly on the main page: PS2 and up. giving the DC another 2-3 years till 'classic' status is like giving Citizen Kane another decade to become cult-hit.

LOL... Well said, well said :rocker:
I believe the line is perfect where it is because the Dreamcast truely was the last "Classic style" system. After the DC, the face of gaming completely changed.
Since the release of the PS2 the gaming community shifted torwards realism. Now we have TONS AND TONS of realistic WWII FPS, Racing games that are all about "tricking out your ride", and heaps of Sandbox style game like Saints row, GTA etc. And I dont give a damn about any of this.
The Dreamcast was the last Classic style system. It was truely pick up and play. It had TONS of great arcade ports and TONS of original games. Very few games were repeated in the DC library. Every year brought almost all new fresh games.
Look at PS2 or any newer system and every year (basically) you get yet another installment of Madden, Burn out, Need for Speed, Tom Clancy related game, Tony Hawk, etc. Not to mention creativity has withered to virtually nothing. And i'm not saying that classic systems didn't have tons of sequels, or some uninspired games, but with the newer generations of systems its much mor formlamatic and there is much less innovation and pick up and play arcade style games.
So the Dreamcast might have been a powerfull system and have been in the same generation as the others, but it was a "classic gamers" console. It was an arcade in a box an no other system can touch that! :D

I could have sword they wanted the modern and classic section to feel more like most modern gaming stores. If it's currently being accepted for trade ins by places like Gamestop, it's modern. If Gamestop wont accept it, it must be obviously classic.

It's classic more because well, its not being sold in stores anymore. That tends to take away its ability of being a modern system that things are still being carried/being made for and thus purchasable in regular retail establishments.
The Dreamcast did 'die' over 7 years ago. That doesn't really make it very modern now does it?

Well, as this thread shows, the DC could go either way depending on who you ask.

Anything older than 10 years or that has been out of production for 2 years should be considered classic. That should be the rule and will end all of these threads :-D

Is there any plan to move discussion of post-PS2, but out of production systems to the classic board? Like GBA, you can't buy it in stores anymore, and there are no more games coming out, but it launched after the PS2 did. Same with N-Gage. Even Gamecube now.

It was a classic from the day it was released.
Everyone knew it couldn't live up to the hype machine that was the PS2. It was obsolete the day it came out, but it had an excellent selection of titles from the get-go, which automatically threw it into the classic category.
But how I love that ugly, white box... :)

And NOISY! :P The DC damn near sounds like a jet revving it's engines when it's spinning up a disc. :D

It "feels" classic to me. When the last few DC titles came trickling stateside, new PS1 sports and budget titles were still coming out. So the DC and PS1 met a final end around the same time.
I'd say the quality of graphics and time the system was released makes it modern, but longevity says classic. You can find pretty decent sized GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 sections in game stores, I havnt seen a DC game for sale for a while now.
Technically the DC is a modern system I guess, but I think people can be forgiven for considering it classic.

I feel it belongs in the "classic" category. The Dreamcast went out 6 years ago. It was Sega's last foray into consoles, and Sega as a name has since become "classic". The style of gaming really started to change with the PS2, and it has not changed much since.

The Dreamcast should be categorized as "classic" along with the Gamecube and Xbox, since all three are no longer manufactured, nor are they supported with new software (unofficial games not counted).

I agree that it should be a classic at the same time that the Gamecube, XBox and PS2 become classic. I think that it is widely associated with that generation of systems and games.
