View Full Version : Memorable Video Game Villains

Let's brainstorm.
When you think of VILLAINS, what's the first game that comes to mind? Not the first you ever played against, just the ones you think of when you think about villains in video gaming. If someone else already picked the "first that comes to mind", then use "the second one that comes to mind".
It doesn't have to be a boss character, so Pooka and Fygar from Dig Dug certainly qualify; and bosses are certainly welcome.
Name the game. Name the villain.

Possibly the first video game villain... DONKEY KONG
Name the first game or two who you specifically remember the "villains" from.
Are you asking for the oldest one we can remember? If that's the case, then I'll say
Adventure. Rhindle the Red.
However, for some strange reason the first one to pop in my head was
Impossible Mission. Elvin Atombender.
"Another visitor. Stay awhile. Stay forever!" Very memorable indeed.

One of my favorites. Ever:
Villain: Sinistar
Game: Sinistar
"RUN, COWARD! RRAAAARRGHHH!!!"
That roar still scares the bejeezus out of people to this day. Now THAT's a villain, bub. :)

Villian: Kefka
Game: FF3
He was a clown with a few screws loose who went nuts and destroyed the world. Who could forget his ma dlaugh, his actions and his lines before you fight him at the end of the game? As you play you're thinking the Empire is the big bad guy, but then you're shocked to see kefka turning on everyone and fulfilling his selfish ambitions.

first one that comes to my mind is Bowser from Super Mario Brothers.. You big mean turtle... =)
And then I got the never dying Dracula from the Castlevania series...
Eternal Champion

Ooooh, I love this...
The first boss I thought of was Ridley from Metroid. I'll never forget the adrenaline rush I got when I made it to Ridley. But the big yahooza for me is the Mother Brain in Metroid. GM Chrysler. I think by now it's obvious that Metroid left a mark on me.
After that it would be Ridley in Metroid 3.
And I have to give props to R-Type 3, which I've just gotten into, and I cursed my way into last night...the second boss, the icky eye-ball spewing thing...

Spyrus the Deathless, Timelord of Chaos, Sinistar's third cousin by marriage from "Attack Of The Timelord!"

*chug chug chug*
And in comes the next wave.

The small alien ships from Asteroids (arcade) were pretty villainous as far as I'm concerned. Or piloted by villains. Hmm... The Space Invaders were sorta the same thing, I guess.
Maybe Yorkle from Adventure? Could be Kaboom's Mad Bomber. So long ago...

The first villian that pops to mind is the eggplant wizard in kid icarus. I remember getting turned into an eggplant for the first time ever.
Also gotta give props to Jaquio, the first 'last' boss I couldn't beat. I finally killed that rat bastard a few years ago when I started working in the call center.

Clarification, folks.
When I said "first", I did mean "first that comes to mind", not "first one you played". Sorry for the confusion. If someone else already picked the "first that comes to mind", then use "the second one that comes to mind".
I'll edit the top post with this as well.

Rez from Gex. His 1st appearance in the first Gex is awesome!

The first villain I thought of is fairly well-known. He's Sephiroth of Final Fantasy VII.
http://www.kidfenris.com/gundressseph.jpg
In the grand pantheon of RPG ne'er-do-wells, he didn't really accomplish that much. After all, he only threatened to destroy the world, while numerous other creeps actually went through with it in their respective games. However, Sephiroth doesn't need such cartoonish supervillany when he can claim a far nastier deed: the abrupt and shocking murder of you-know-who.
So let's salute that silver-haired, androgynous lunatic, Sephiroth. He may not have killed everyone, but with a single stab, he became one of the truly loathsome video game villains.

My most memorable villian is The Great and Mighty Poo. He just.....well its like.....you know. That was just the fruits of a seriously deranged mind, I love every verse, ever note, and ever roll of toliet paper. Seriously on of my favorite video game villians ever.
My second favorite is the guys for Mega Man, with the little helmets. I can't remember their names. But they are in almost every Mega Man. And they are so cute, yet for some reason still very hard to avoid.

Mother Brain is my personal favorite.
And the little annoying turtle hatchling from Paper Mario was pretty funny.
Worst ever: Tobias Buckner from Turok Evolution.

Smash TV - Mutoid Man was a super villain. An incredibly hard super villian at that. Besides being a cross between a giant mutant and a bulldozer, the guy never seemed to be scathed by whatever you did to him. Blow his arms off, he dosen't mind. Blow his chest cavity out, he doesn't mind. Blow his entire upper body off the tank chassis... you gussed it, he doesn't mind.

Well, when I just free associate VG villains, I come up with "CATS" from Zero Wing (you know, the space pirate who says "all your base are belong to us") and the evil man in the suit from House of the Dead 2 (the one who says "Dogs of the AMS. It's time they made a move.")

First thing that comes to mind is the dog that jumps thru the window in the hallway of Resident Evil, scared the hell out of me.
And in RE2, when you play thru both characters you then move on to the final scene, when your in the train tunnel and the boss thing kept mutating and coming after you. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but that thing was a real nasty and hard to kill. Got my heart racing that's for sure.

None can touch Maou Garp from Kabuki den.
Lucifeller also dominates in TM Ziria & Shin Den.
I've loved Dark Fact & Dulk Dekt ever since encountering the latter in Vanished Omens.
Death Adder will always be one of my favorite because of the PCE CD game that I experienced as soon as it was released(the voice acting and ruthlessness of the cinemas drove it home for me).
But can there really be many more memorable final bosses than Janken The Great?
I mean c'mon.
End of discussion.

Bowser. My first and most memorable villian. I hated that guy as a kid. Used to think he was chasing me when I would finish playing and go to bed.

Without a doubt, Rolento from Final Fight and Street Fighter Alpha.
A psycho ex-soldier, ex-gang member turned terrorist? I seriously doubt Capcom will be making any new games featuring Rolento, but back then terrorist characters weren't quite so taboo.
Rolento Schugarg is one of the most fascinating characters ever created by Capcom or any other game company.

I i think of villians, for some reason from SMB2, the Ratt, 3 headed snake, and the very end boss the toad all come to mind.
Even though they might not be the hardest or badest villian, I think they were VERY creative and cool bosses. (SMB2 might not have been the best game in the Mario series, but it's still kills almost everyplatformer on the NES still. Everything in that game is definately things you don't see in other games, but the game is so damn creative to me)

http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/breakdown/solus.jpg
I bet not too many have played Breakdown, but I gotta say... Solus, leader of the evil race of T'lan, is one extremely badass villain indeed. His strength could give Superman a run for his money, the bastard seems to have no emotion over all of his destruction, he speaks in an extremely cool semi-robotic voice, he wants to bring about the absolute annihilation of the human race, and he does all this without having to wear pants. Solus is just freaking awesome, but if you actually manage to beat him (in one of the greatest fights EVER), his dying words are that he is just Nexus' avatar, Nexus being the core of the T'lan. Although, in the end, he may have just been a tool, Solus and his badness won't be forgotten.
And now, a shameless plug. Play Breakdown. DO IT NOW. Or at least rent it. Just a suggestion. :D

Robotnik will ALWAYS be Robotnik to me. EggMan can suck it.. Heh.. Get it?
Same as DragonLord will NEVER be DracoLord. Fuck, what the hell is "DracoLord"? Why change that?
Can you tell how much I hate when they change the name of the characters in remakes/sequels? Especially when the original games came out in the 80's/90's.

The Metroids from the first Metroid game. It's easy to handle one of them, but once they start ganging up, you better react fast or it's game over.
Ghaleon from Lunar series. He was one of them rare super-cool villains that's impossible to hate. Just the way he acted towards you sent off vibes. From an evil would've-been god in the first game, to his unknown tendencies in the Lunar 2. He had a great character, with a superb voice from John Truitt.
Another villain who I can't stand would be Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. No matter where you ran, he'd be there right behind you. And just when you thought that you got rid of him, he returns nastier than before.

I think of Bowser from the Mario series.
Ghouls'N Ghosts - Genesis:
Have not played it in awhile, so I don't remember if the thing had a name. I just remember the level where you climbed up a bunch of step, and fought a few small cloud creatures on the way up (damn tough little bastards).
Then when you got to this landing never the end of the level, a BIG cloud comes down and starts zapping the hell out of you. It may not be the best villain in this topic, but I always think of the damn cloud with the bloodshot eyes when I think of villlains/ bosses in a games that I have played. I liked the idea of the thing so much, I put such creatures into my D&D campaign...
That's mine (probably could have come up with a better one, but it's the best I can think of at the moment).
If I could just name some other villains I like, they would be:
That damn Light-Speed Starship in UFO for the Odyssey2 (suppose it's not really a villain, but it's mean and it always manages to zap me, eventually).
Spyrus the Deathless, Timelord of Chaos - Odyssey2 (like PDF, I fine this dude to be a villain and a half, as his forces are tougher than hell)
The Alien from Alien vs Predator - Atari Jaguar. (Those things always managed to scare the crap out of me when I used to play that game. Of course, I've gotten used to them, somewhat, but I still think they make a great villian).
The Beholder in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. (Now there was a nasty villain, which I actually liked - I just like Beholders. It was cool that they kept him hidden for awhile during the first part of the game).
that's all I got for now, and by 3 cents.... I mean meseta worth.. :D

kefka wasn't a clown - look at the dress style of a lot of the 16th hundred court audiences. they have the frilled neckband, and really outlandish garbs (which inspired queen a from star wars ep. 1).
what's kind of interesting is that he was a normal human being; but having been the first to recieve the magitek infusion, they screwed up and made him psychotic. (the irony of his hatred for general leo - who was the only high officer of the empire to refuse the magic surgery).

http://mkwarehouse.com/animations/special/mk2kintaro.gifI don't mean to be politically correct, but you should refer to Lifeforce as "Salamander" because that was its original name. Konami released it in the US as Lifeforce and then rereleased Salamander under the same name (Lifeforce) in Japan for no damn reason. x_x
