I am trying to beat as many side scrolling beat em ups on SNES and Genesis as possible. I've already gone through a fair few on SNES but I know I am missing some, and besides Streets of Rage and Punisher, I don't think I've played any on Genesis.

I enjoyed Ninja Warriors (SNES) :) I'm trying to defeat the last boss though I get close then I die.

Rival Turf hasn't aged very well, but Brawl Brothers is still decent fun. The Peace Keepers still rocks something fierce, though the jpn version (Rushing Beat Shura) rocks even harder.

Maximum Carnage, for both systems. I think it's a really good one.

Comic Zone for the Genesis. Great side scrolling beat'em up. One of my favorites for the system.

If you have the Sega CD then you can't go wrong with Final Fight CD. It's one of the best ports of that game.

Don't forget Alien vs Predator for SNES,
or Alien Storm for Genesis

Captain America & The Avengers for the NES/Genesis is a good one.
X-Men for the SNES is too (if you can stand to do the Street Fighter moves, that is...)

Thanks. I've played some of these but some I haven't. Never even heard of Comic Zone and Alien Storm (never grew up with a Genesis except Sonic and stuff). I did not like Golden Axe much though. :( At least, I think it was Golden Axe..

Wow, I hope you were joking or being sarcastic. That game blows, and you'd be the first one I met that cited they enjoyed the game.

I'll recommend Combatribes on SNES. Not the best, but colorful and quite brutal with lots of dark humor offensive moves.

Steven: I liked AvP a little actually, but it wasn't that good yeah. I was really disappointed considering how much I love both movie franchises. Also, do you post on GameFAQs as Kikko or some name like that?

SNES - ActRaiser 1 & 2 (though 1 is part sim) and I always loved the Magic Sword port.

Not a beatemup, but I strongly recommend the 2 Contra titles available. Run and gun at its finest.

That's The Alien Wars for SNES and The Hard Corps for Gen.

Well, nowhere does it say I liked the game, I just noticed it wasnt mentioned yet. Honestly I maybe played it for 5 minutes after picking it up at a yardsale. It didnt stand out as either good or bad within that amount of time. At least now I know not to say I like it or I"ll be lambasted on the internet for it.
I did however like Alien Storm.

Batman Returns.

That game was so much fun when I was a kid, it's a shame it's only for one player.
I used to own it and I played the shit out of it.
Ending sucks hard, though.

To me, Brawl Brothers was the best co-op beat 'em up om the SNES bar NONE. LOVE that game.

Super Double Dragon was okay if not deliberate....Final Fight 3 was nice too.

For the Genny, gotta roll with Streets of Rage 2, hands DOWN.

EDIT: OH! Almost forgot about The Punisher for Genesis. That was pure awesome!

Batman Returns

Good one. Also, as others have mentioned, Final Fight, Magic Sword (is this classified as a beat-'em-up?), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, all for the SNES.

I've never played Rival Turf or Tuff E Nuff, both on the SNES. Are they any good? I remember Combatribes being bad. Am I wrong?

Super Double Dragon is okay, but is too slow and choppy for me.

Golden Axe and Revenge of Shinobi (is this classified as a beat-'em-up?) are good on the Genesis. X-Men and Altered Beast are decent, too. Stay away from a game called The Last Battle! My friend used to play it constantly and it was terrible.

Rival Turf is the first in a trilogy (Brawl Brothers, The Peace Keepers) and mostly gets slammed, but I don't see why. It was pretty decent for its time, and offered a 2P mode unlike SNES Final Fight. Wasn't the best, but certainly competent enough. Tuff E Nuff is actually a SF II clone rather than a beat 'em up, and it's considered surprisingly solid for the most part. Myself I have yet to play it.

Combatribes bad you ask? It's all opinion but I loved it personally. On my site I rated it 8/10 good. I admit, I have a lot of good memories with the SNES port, but I genuinely think it's a good beat 'em up. Nice bold colors, some sadistic offensive moves and a small town feel to the game that works for me.

BTW, Return of Double Dragon >>>> Super Double Dragon. RoDD is SDD's JP counterpart. It's got some extra stuff and plays smoother. In fact, I'd say SDD comes off very disappointing, while RoDD was satisfactory for yours truly. I've never met anyone who has played both and DIDN'T agree that the JP version's better.

It's a shame Bad Dudes never got released on a 16-bit sonsole. The arcade and Amiga versions were awesome.

By the way, this might not count as a beat-'em-up, but Joe & Mac is great on the SNES.

I liked it too. However, it's one of the few games I know of where I consider the 1P mode more fun to play than the sim. 2P mode! With 2 players, the game is actually harder, and IIRC, slows down.

Joe & Mac 2 is pretty good too :)

Growl/Runark is a halfway decent one for Genesis, as is Splatterhouse 3.

Ghost Chaser Denshi, King of the Monsters 2, and Undercover Cops are two good ones for SNES.

I would recommend legend, king of dragons, knights of the round, Ghost chaser densei, undercover cops, war of the gems , spiderman maximum carnage, turtles in time and death and return of superman

all games i have completed recently and all pretty good, the more challenging ones are maximum carnage, death and return of superman and undercover cops.

currently playing combatribes and i found it pretty crap, the bosses always have really cheap weapons and its hard to get away from them once you have been knocked down, the controls are sluggish and there is no jump move , i would give it a 5/10 myself

decent beat em ups for the megadrive are streets of rage 1-3, golden axe 1-3, splatterhouse 2 , separation anxiety, captain america and the avengers (do not buy this for the snes as that version is terrible)
