I just got through playing Triad Stone for the LaserActive system (think Genesis Laserdisc add-on), and I've just gotta say this game is sweet! It plays just like Dragon's Lair (actually more like Tiime Gal or Super Don Quioxte) but with a twist. In addition to pressing the proper direction when prompted, you must also "power up" at certain times by rapidly pressing the B button and you must specify a direction when using your sword (up, down, left, or right). These little twists make a good game even better!

My only complaint is that the time the system gives you to make a sword move seems really quick, it almost has to be an instantaneous move. The only times I've died are on sword moves. Other than that, I'm in love with this game. Has anyone ever gotten to the end? I managed to pass three stages, but died on the fourth (there are eight in total).

Incidentally, are there any more LA games like this?

I've beaten 3DO Strahl, which is the same game.

The only other LaserActive game quite like Triad Stone is Road Prosecutor, which is also available on another platform (Sega CD, Road Avenger). In both this case and with Strahl, the LaserActive version is far superior in terms of smooth gameplay and graphic clarity.

I got further into the game last night and discovered two very strange things. On the "gullivers travels" stage (the one with the little people) the screen does this weird effect where it looks like the screen is sorta melting. It's almost like each frame collapses down revealing the one behind it (it's really hard to describe) and on the board where you start out by a camp fire (the one in the lower right of the map) there's this strange ripple effect over the whole screen. I don't know what was going on, but somehow I doubt this is supposed to happen. Is it my game or is it the system? The game still played normally btw, but was rather hard because of the odd screen effects.

That melting/ripple stuff isn't happening on mine, Matt.

I should know, because now that you mentioned the game again it got me hooked back into it! The LaserActive version is a bit harder than the 3DO version too! Either that or I've lost a considerable amount of mad skillz since beating Strahl on 3DO!

I'll try it again tonight and see what happens.

The snow level keeps tripping me up. I can almost get to the end then I die. Arrrggghhhh!!!!! It's those damn sword moves! Do you hold the control pad in the direction first THEN press the sword button, or do you have to do it simultaneously?

I have my LaserActive hooked up for another reason though: Star Wars: The Definitive Collection! The classic triology, pre-special edition with commentaries and extras. All in LD format! I'm in heaven...
