Probably not the first to figure that one out... but if you cut the two little nubs inside the Game Genie that go in the slits on the US games the Super Famicom games fit in and work fine!
I just played Mother 2 a little... kinda hard since I can't read Japanese haha

Or you can just take out the two little pieces from inside the SNES.

correct. aside from some very minor differences (RF output and the different power jack style) snes is internally IDENTICAL to an sfc

Really? I thought there was a region lockout.

Any lockout chips are on the carts IIRC and they are not used too frequently. I use the Genie for SFC carts as well. I'd rather hack up a passthru than a console. I took the whole swing clip thing off with a hack saw. Low tech solutions to high tech problems. :D

So, could I place the guts of a US SNES into the body of a Euro SNES to create a Super Famicom style US SNES?

You'd probably want to do that to a Super Famicom from Japan (unless you mean just using the shell) since it has the easier power input to work with.

Yes but the US and Japanese machines use the same chip. It's only different in the PAL machines.

But the Game Genie only works with games that don't have the extra two sets of pins.
Either that or I got one messed up Game Genie.

Or you could drill holes in the cart itself like some assholes did to several of my fami carts :bad-words:

Reminder: Don't cut out the tabs out of a Game Genie AND the SNES (which I did once). All of my games started acting screwy, even when the Game Genie wasn't connected. Thunder Spirirts went in slow-motion, Terranigma would let you gain a bunch of levels and freeze, etc...

Sure, but your USA games won't fit as the cartridge profile is a totally different shape. The USA cartridge profile is wider than the JPN / EUR profile, which is why JPN cartridges can fit in the larger USA cartridge slot once the retaining tabs are broken out. (that's why they're there, because the cartridge would fit without them)
I know this whole thing seems insanely simple but since so many seem to complicate it, I ended up writing a mod tutorial (yes, a mod tutorial for something this easy) years ago...

I thought that the EUR carts won't work on a USA/JPN system.

I believe they don't but I don't own any to confirm. All I was saying is that the EUR cartridges are the same physical shape as the JPN cartridges, a USA cartridge will not fit in the slot of either EUR or JPN system due to the USA cartridge's larger size. Since the JPN and EUR cartridges are smaller, however, they can fit in the USA cartridge slot after the two small lockout tabs are removed - if a EUR game will work or not, that's a different case entirely.

Wow, I didn't know they were the same shape as USA carts. I've never bothered to check out what a EUR SNES looked like.

No, an EUR cartridge is the same shape as a JPN cartridge. The EUR Super Nintendo uses a JPN Super Famicom shell, which is why a USA cartridge won't fit in a EUR cartridge slot.

Thats what I meant to say. heh. Well, USA didn't get the shaft this time. That means, you can't fit USA carts inside a JPN or EUR systems without a converter or taking the top off the shell correct?

So I would have to widen the cart slot. Hmmmm

It's a massive difference honestly and I seriously doubt it would look clean, the way it's molded that is. It's an entirely different matter than, say, widering a USA Genesis cartridge slot for JPN Mega Drive games. This is the reason I own both a Super Famicom and Super Nintendo. Sure, fitting a JPN cartridge into a Super Nintendo is no big deal, but I love how the SFC looks. For USA games I use the SNES.

So does that mean I can play Terranigma with a game genie on my NTSC US SNES? Or am I dicked because of region lockout chips?

A Game Genie won't work. You need an adapter that has 2 cart slots to play PAL games, and even with one of those there's a a chance it might not support the newer games. Terranigma is playable with a Pro Action Replay MK3, or Pro Action Replay MK2 that has BIOS 2.P or higher.

SFC Uno doesn't seem to work on a US system, even with a converter cart... so I suspect it must have one of those rare region lockout chips... DAMMIT!

A SNES Xband is an even better converter than the Game Genie is, if you can find one. :moon:
I have two games that would not work with my Tri-Star Adapter or through my Game Genie, Jikkyo Oshiberi Parodius and Panic Bomber W. I imagine it was due to region lockout but both boot up just fine and dandy when hooked up through my Xband.
I'm sure I'm not alone, but I always thought the Super Famicom looked much cooler and more sleek than the SNES. I'll never understand Nintendo's logic for having the US hardware/cartridges look radically different from their Japanese counterparts. :?
