What do you all think is the nicest, cleanest, best looking overall game playing game pre-dreamcast. When you think of your game think of story, graphics, smoothness, rendering, gameplay. Let me know.

Funny, Kolibri sprung to mind for me immediately as well. Very nice looking game.

Dreamcast
07-17-2008, 02:52 PM
Hmm. Full motion video games like Slam City with Scottie pippin look good /sarcasm.

I always thought that the Gran Tourismo 1 looked awesome for the PS1.
But you're saying beautiful. So my guess would be....hmmm... I can't really think of any.

Ecco 2 still is very beautiful, how bout Astal on the Saturn? I've noticed not a lot of 3d games. Perhaps 3d was rushed in before it was really ready.

It would definitally NOT be any console game or any PC game. It would have to be one of the games on Sega's MODEL 3 family of arcade boards.

Scud Race/Super GT
Daytona USA 2
Sega Rally 2
Magical Truck Adventure
Harley Davidson & L.A. Riders
The Ocean Hunter

come to mind

ChronoTrigger (SNES)
Ecco (Saturn)
Donkey Kong County (SNES)
Final Fantasy 1 (NES)
TLOZ OOT (N64)

What's with all these list threads in classic gaming lately that all ban the dreamcast? This is like the third one i've seen in the past week! Was Dreamcast declared so awesome that it is now banned from all lists because it will always win? heh

The Commodore 64 version was good but, like many games during that era, the load times killed it. The Amiga version was jaw dropping at the time.

Agreed! A truely beautiful game. Although I can't say I find the gameplay to be as good as the graphics.

Club Drive

LOL! You can't be serious... But I honestly really REALLY like the game. It got TONS of flack, but my friends and I used to play it all the time. We loved it!

Astal (Sega Saturn) Come on guys!

Thank you! I guess I don't need to nominate Astal since it's already been done. Not only were the music and the graphics beautiful but they also had a style all their own.

I'm going to go with Panzer Dragoon Zwei for the Saturn. I still love this game even today.

Yep! This game absolutely rocks!!! One thing the Saturn Panzer Dragoon games did better than anyother game then or now were the skies. Honestly who can forget the first time they played PD Zwei. It was a breath taking moment when Lagi flew off the cliff in the second level and learned to fly and you were heading into the most beautiful sunset ever captured.

I think all the Panzer games had Jaw dropping sun sets, sun rises, clouds, etc. I have never seen another game have such picturesque skies.

Arcade: Definitely Street Fighter 3. Beautiful games.

Home console: Considering how ugly early 3d was, it's gonna be a 2d title. My vote is for Yoshi's Island. Although, Ocarina of Time was damn pretty. What about Majora's Mask? That count? It was easily prettier.

I vote for the Final Fantasy series on SNES. Mystic Quest was one of my favorites at the time. I think the story was a bit short for a FF game, but the graphics still stick in my mind as Swwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttt!

Animated graphics: Astal
Arcade: Scud Race (good call there)

But overall it would have to be NiGHTS, for creating such a vibrant, morphing and living world that was always changing. You could play that game a mile a second and the graphics would still amaze. There's never been anything like it before or since, a world so fantastical it can't be real, but an engine so complex and changing based on your interaction that it feels totally organic.

Samurai Shodown II

In my opinion, the best of the series. The stages and fighters on this game are just GORGEOUSLY rendered. After playing the first game for so long, seeing II just blew my mind.

Though it may sound fanboyish, FF3 for the SNES. The opening with them aproaching the town was just great. Kefka trying to destroy the world was also nice.

Good call. An absolutely beautiful game right there. It's a shame was never localized.

Other good calls:
3rd Strike
Radiant Silvergun
and generally any modern arcade game of the day like Model3.
