That poor control panel. That poor cab. :bawling:

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but it looks a lot more like one of those prefab "designed to look like a classic arcade machine" cabs than one actually made out of an asteroids cab.
If not, someone should drive down there and smack that guy.

btw should we have a contest to name the games in that screen shot? I see Dig Dug, DK3, Pinball Action, Rally X, and Space Invaders...is that bottom middle one Xevious?

Looking at the control panel, it looks like it was a basketball game at one time. You can see the court above the mario graphic.

Rest easy - definitely not an Asteroids cab. I'm not sure what it is. Could be a custom-made job.
What makes you say that, doctor? From the shape of it and the big honkin' control panel, it sure looks like Asteroids.

It's not the same shape as the original Asteroids cabinet. The piece that extends from the control panel to the marquee is mainly vertical for most of the original, this one has a very short start upwards and begins angling outward toward the marquee area sooner. Also, the control panel is a completely different shape.
stonic knows best, though. He played the game for two straight days going for the record in my store just a week before opening. I don't remember exactly where he ended up in the standings but he's up there... and I'd imagine that he knows the exact shape of this thing all TOO well!

The sides look to be a slightly different shape, as if they were replaced...don't see what you mean about the cp (and I'm looking right at the machine Scott was playing ;-)
I thought maybe Stonic had some inside info...

It's a (badly) converted Atari Pole Position. You can tell by the notch that sticks out where the steering wheel should be.

IMO, that's just as bad as butchering an Asteroids. However, they did do a good job covering up the accelerator pedal.

Yup, easy to identify after moving around my Pole Position cab so many times, you can also see the support frame the original bezel rested against. Geez though, think they could have picked a more overized and top heavy cabinet to convert for MAME? Moving those Pole Position uprights is a bitch and a half.

I guess he sold it. The comparison pics are gone.
I just hope whoever bought it realizes they actually bought a classic, and changes it back to PP.
Edit - well, now it's back.
